Cat 5 question

I'm going to run a cable from my router to another room. I want to go through the attic and have wall jacks to plug the computer and router into, repectively. I can't seem to find any cat 5 without connectors. Can you just get patch cable and cut the ends off to connect to the jack? Or do you have to buy cable with no connectors?

You should be able to find someone who is willing to sell it to you in the bulk. Your gonna look at about .09/FT for so..., it's pretty cheap, especially if your not cutting those ends off.

I made my own Cat 5 cables in computer class. My teacher got cables without connectors from Home Depot in bulk.

We bought two 100' cable rolls. They didn't have connectors, we put them on ourselves.... I think we got them at either CompUSA or BestBuy...

How easy did you find putting on the connectors? Do you need any tools for it?

It's something I'm thinking about doing too.

Once you get the hang of arranging the wires in the plugs it's no big deal. And yes, you will need a special plier for it. This here is the one I have but they do come cheaper than this : http://www.rs-components.dk/cgi-bin...=dkie&3233918174=3233918174&catoid=-187618891

Edit: El Crappo.. El link no working... http://whateversville.dk/filez/crimp.jpg

Edit2: And the batteries in my friggin' keyboard are dead too :grumpy:

My dad ended up doing that stuff. I'm not sure if he used a standard wire stripper, a knife, or if there was a special pliars that came with or something... But it wasn't too hard. All you have to do is get the wires stripped, push them into the connectors in the jack, and then you can connect it to another cable. It's very similar to putting on a new electric outlet.

I have yet to see a cat5 plug where you have to strip the wires.. Sorry but this is part of what I do for a living....

Oh yeah, was I wrong! Most of the Cat5 ends have something that automatically clips the wire when you pop the wires in! Man was I wrong!!!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
I must've been thinking of when my dad was stripping the thick part, so that way he could get to the (6/8?) cables in the wire... Sorry, but I forgot how many are in there...

Some small edits there, for an unfortunate typo by RJensen11.

Now I know that the tools are easily available, I'm a bit more predisposed to do it.

What small edits? And what typos?

Sorry, I was kind of rushed when I was writing that up there before....

If all your doing is running the horizontal cabling from a distribution pannel to a wall receptor, the only special tool for the wires that you should need would be a punch-down tool. If you follow the 568-A standard for wiring, you should be alright.
