A New Zealand animal welfare group has rescued a cat who survived on nothing but McDonald's cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets for more than a year.

'Frankie' had lived in a fast food restaurant car park since residents of a nearby apartment block were evicted and left it behind as a kitten 12 to 18 months ago, One News reported.

The abandoned kitten quickly learned to follow cars through the drive through in the hope they would throw it a chicken nugget or part of a burger.

But with winter on its way and staff concerned that Frankie's health was declining, Waikato SPCA field officer Jessica Watson decided to take action.

Now its fast food days are over.

"He's on a strict cat food-only diet now," Ms Watson said.

"When I first took him home he refused to eat anything because it wasn't McDonald's and I seriously considered going back there to get him a burger.

"I would put pet food down and he would give me a look like, 'What is that?'.

"But now he's a big, and healthy, eater."

Frankie has now been health checked, vaccinated, desexed and microchipped as the welfare group prepares the former McDonald's addict for adoption.

I wouldn't want to eat cat food if I ate cheeseburgers for a year, either.

And I thought my cats were unhealthy (They often nick a chip when we have them if it falls on the floor and they get full fat milk everyday).

I thought the cat had lived off one single cheeseburger, for one year, after reading the title . It's still unusual, - a bit odd, maybe - that a cat gets a McDonald's-addiction.

I always thought cow's milk was bad for cats...

Ah, that makes sense. Ours are mad for milk, we used to give them kitten milk but the mess they left was too much to keep cleaning up!
