Caterham is being sold to the Team Lotus concern owned by AirAsia entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, according to well placed sources.
The Kent-based sports car company - which is run by former Lotus executive Ansar Ali and owned by private equity firm Corven Ventures - is said to have struck a deal with the Malaysian that will bring fresh investment and ambitious product plans.
The deal is set to be announced next Wednesday, when Team Lotus is holding an event at Duxford airfield. It’s meant to be an F1-related activity, but the invitation says it will include “an incredibly exciting announcement about the future of our team”.
Fernandes is currently embroiled in a court battle with Lotus Cars over the use of the name in Formula One. Buying Caterham could give him a potential alternative brand to market - although Autocar sources insist that no decision has been made on whether Caterham branding will appear on F1 cars in the foreseeable future.

I wonder what the 'ambitious product plans' are. I'd quite like to see Caterham building mk1 Elises, and with Lotus moving more upmarket over the next few years it shouldn't affect their sales too much, so could be possible.

I don't really care about who's owning the company, as long as they keep producing the Seven. ;)

It would be awesome if they re branded the team Catherham F1.

Even better if they spelled it correctly ;)

I'll echo the Elise idea. With Lotus going upmarket, Caterham should definitely take the rights to Elise production. They'd have to presumably call it something different though, since Lotus will still be using the Elise name.

Actually, the Caterham 111 would be perfect, since 111 is the Elise's 'number'.

My bad :)

Do you guys realise this is going to be an F1 related activity and about the future of the team, its likely nothing to do with the car side of things. It's so obvious they would want to change the name because of the other Lotus team and this way they can pick another brand which is just as historic.

Robin.

The article's a bit ambiguous, I think you're right that next week's announcement will be about the F1 team but it seems inevitable that Fernandes will want to expand the Caterham range at some point in the future and the article mentions 'ambitious product plans' which to me implies more cars. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see though.

Team Lotus bought the rights to its name and is not affiliated with Lotus Cars as you see it on the streets. This purchase isn't related to Lotus Cars UK other than the enterprise making the purchase is doing so under the licensed name that is used for F1 marketing.

This Lotus naming business has cause a huge headache for Lotus in the motorsports world, and this is just another step towards that in the road car realm.

Confirmed

Team Lotus Enterprises has confirmed the purchase of British sportscar maker Caterham Cars, as reported by AUTOSPORT last week.

The deal will enable the lightweight sportscar manufacturer to "expand its brand profile and product family," according to Team Lotus.

"Caterham has a unique place at the heart of the motoring world," said Team Lotus owner Tony Fernandes. "As well as being proudly and staunchly British, it has an enviable and uniquely unblemished reputation within the industry for performance, handling and engineering excellence.

"Caterham Cars has remained wholly faithful to Colin Chapman's philosophy of 'less is more', and the DNA of the original Seven can still be traced to the newest additions to Caterham's product offering.

"It is already a successful business with sales across Europe, Japan, Australia and the Middle East, and under the guidance of the existing management team, we now have all the ingredients and the launch pad to further evolve that spirit and take Caterham to new exciting horizons with innovative products and greater global brand exposure."

The announcement comes before a decision from the British courts about the ongoing Lotus naming dispute, although there was no mention of a rumoured name change in the statement.

The team said that the purchase will signal the continued development of its famous Seven brand, using F1 technology.

Caterham Cars' managing director Ansar Ali added: "This is yet another exciting chapter in the Caterham story. Until now, the resources Caterham has had at its disposal have, naturally, limited the exposure of the Caterham driving experience and the legendary Seven has had to rely almost entirely on its remarkable reputation and legacy.

"We will remain entirely true to the philosophy that we, as custodians of one man's motoring concept, have protected for nearly 40 years.

"However, the acquisition of the company by Team Lotus Enterprises will allow our existing management team to take Caterham's core spirit of pure driving enjoyment to a hitherto un-served audience.

"While the Seven will now have the global springboard it deserves and will continue to be evolved yet further, we also have the opportunity to expand the Caterham family beyond the Seven and SP/300.R and breathe new life into our uniquely respected brand and mature it into a truly global business."

They need a driver to finish 4th in the championship so they can put a 7 on the front. Caterham F1 sounds good. Maybe a special formula 7 will be made, with aerodynamic aid's on it (like the V8 Atom).

The owner should just auction the name rights to Team Lotus to raise some cash, knowing Lotus will probably bid for it anyway. Then fully name the team Caterham F1 next year.
At the moment he is just giving free advertising to Lotus which he get's no benefit for.
He said that the link will get stronger next season, and F1 style parts made available to Caterham customers.
