CD drive not reading cd's!

well, the power must be connected if it's opening and closing the drive. Perhaps the IDE, or maybe the lense is just dirty:odd: Like said above, we need more info

i dunno it just stopped wroking and hasn't worked since, it does open + close, but thats it, it doesn't even attempt to read the disk.

probably won't work but is worth a shot:
check to see if your IDE cable is securly fastened on both the rom drive and the motherboard...

Why would resetting the computer make the CDrom work?? :strange:
I think by "not working" he means the drive isn't even bothering to spin up and attempt to read the disc, but if it is, that means it's the.. lil laser thingy that reads the disc

try seeing if all the cables are plugged in tight too

ok, me and my step dad open the god damn thing up and and preform a little "surgery" (highly not recommended!). Turns out there was so much dust it the thing it was coating the laser lens. So we balsted it with air and clean it furthur with alcohal and a q-tip. After that we put a cd in it (cd drive still of of comp and in peices) and it fired right up. i was fasinated with the little red lazer on the cd. i was amazed becuase the lazer was going right though the cd as it was spinning. The we turned off r computer and reassemble everything.

Post Scriptum, It took a while beofre we figured out how to take the bloody drive apart. Oh and my step dad knows alot bout computers so don't worry.

Good stuff. Hey, vacuum once in a while, wouldja? :P

The red light was probably the disc sensor (so the drive knows if there is a disc in the tray. The actual optical pickup operates in the infrared band and is invisible to the unaided eye.
