That mission is annoying. How can the vvideo show that the demonstrator touched the car but still passed? Well heres the thing, the key to beating this mission is to go all out on the very last turn. Thats the best timing to pass him. But don't lose too much speed during the second and third turn.

Its O-1
I have spent a few hours on this and still haven't passed it. Most infuriating was when he went wide after the 3rd corner (I might have forced that), got sideways in the gravel, and then re-entered the track just in time to hit me in rear as I went past. I almost threw the psp after that one.

The key is to take the first right hander with no brake (turn in earlier than you might think) and get on the throttle right after the apex so that you are in the Merc's draft into the chicane. Brake later entering the chicane than the Merc getting you right on it's tail (your nose should literally be under it's rear wing with no contact). Follow it into the right hander out of the chicane, turn in earlier than the Merc, hit the apex earlier and exit the corner to the left of the track (use the curb). This will put your front wheels even with the rear wheels of the Merc and have you on the line for the inside of the hairpin coming up. At that point you've got it. Brake earlier than the Merc, turn in early, protect the inside line (actually the middle line too, the Merc will try to go around the outside of you, but if you are in it's line it won't hit you) and exit the hairpin smooth on the throttle. Done.

Basically that Merc drives a wide (and slow) line, especially in the chicane. If you know that and adjust your line accordingly you can overtake him with no contact what-so-ever. No need to shunt the Merc into the kitty liter to pass. BTW, you can have contact between cars, as long as it's under 65kph and you are in a turn, meaning it's not trying to shunt the other car (it also seems if you don't hit the other car with the front of yours you are ok).

Edit: After checking my challenge replay, I actually passed the car in the second corner (like the two posts below), and I was completely flat out through the first corner, no brakes or lifting off the throttle.

I think Tetradic's advice is perfect for a less aggressive approach, though I'm not sure I'd consider either approach easier than the other.

Agreed, however if you take the first corner flat out, you can get on his inside and pass him on the second corner, then keep the lead for the rest of the race.

The trick is, Flat out first corner (Turn-in early and hard), then brake late and hard on the inside for the second corner for the pass.

Wow.

I'm useless at gran turismo and didn't have any trouble with this one. (had problems with others easy ones though)

get on the brake a bit later than him and get up the inside of him into the second (after the nearly flat out corner) and then just keep him behind you.

That works too. I never consistently hit the turn in for taking the corner flat so I always found it easier to throttle off for a split second while the car came around. Plus I found when I did hit full throttle entry for that corner I exited on a bad line, forcing me to stuff it into the entry into the chicane, which it turn often meant contact and challenge over.

So that works. If I was racing online in GT5P with someone I trusted I might try that move just for kicks (again only with someone I trusted and knew well and knew I was taking the piss out on them really driving like that). But given this challenge (and most) have a no contact rule I've been driving the challenges (to gold) in ways that would be clean by OLR standards.

Whats wrong with the way I overtook him?

The video shows a clean lap and I overtake the CLK in the EXACT same way as the demonstration shows, however I do it 2 corners earlier. ;)

Yes, this is the only way I could do it. If I tried to do it the way the game showed and I made any contact at all with him in the last corner I failed.

But when I jammed inside him on that first right-hander I was home free... I was so happy to be done with it. I would recommend that method.

I was speaking for myself (about what "clean" is and how I'm doing the challenges to gold). I didn't watch your reply until just now. It looks as if there is some minor contact in the chicane, legitimate contact given the fight for the spot (but you didn't push the Merc out of the way), but traditionally that would be be a "clean" pass in OLR racing against the AI since there was some contact (as it looks from the angle). As far as real racing and per this challenge it's good to go.

Cr@zy thank you for the video and thank you everone for the help with this one. I shall continue the battle. I have managed to get infront of the CLK once and span off on the very last corner. Like someone else said, my psp almost went flying when that happened.
