Changing background on multiple monitors

I've just acquired a VGA cable for my external monitor and have hooked it up to my laptop.

The problem is that I cannot seem to find a way to put different backgrounds on each monitor.

I've looked on google and every site says to go into the desktop changing spot, go to "customize desktop", then "web", and take an image from there.

But every time I do that it leaves the monitor black, with the same random photo on the laptop as a background.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Windows 8 can do it natively. Otherwise you need a 3rd party program like Displayfusion.

Try Linux, it can do it.

Because that is the most straight forward solution

DisplayFusion would be the easier option, the other being to make custom, single image wallpapers that are the resolution width of the screens combined, and have the primary monitor be on the left.

I'll try the DisplayFusion, thanks. 👍

I forgot to mention that it's on Windows XP, and I wouldn't want to make a single, long wallpaper because the screens are at a different height, and are a different size.

I was actually going to ask this vere question in here later today. Running the same setup, XP laptop with an external monitor. I'll give DisplayFusion a try tonight.
