Requested in 1969 by Fred Gibb as an NHRA-ready Camaro variant, the ZL1 is the ultimate version of the classic Camaro. It is powered by a 427 cubic inch V8 that was originally intended for a Chaparral racing car. This aluminium block engine is very light for its size and power, with the equivalent weight of a 327 block, and is capable of running around 500 horsepower with the removal of a few restrictive parts. This huge power, combined with the Camaro's modest kerb weight and 4-speed gearbox with optional short-ratio setup, gave it performance which could blow away Corvettes of the time.

The ZL1 can run 1/4 mile drags in the low 13 second range even with no tuning, and regularly ran low 10's in full NHRA-spec...

Ultimately, only 69 ZL1's were ordered, all of which were completely street legal and were sold under complete Chevrolet warranties. The majority of these "Ultimate Camaro's" are now competition-spec, but it would be awesome to experience its raw power in the world of GranTurismo...

Always amazed that you could get these with a Hydramatic, and that about a third of them were ordered as such. Bit more info about them, including horsepower figures as installed. 375hp doesn't sound like much, but even that is about 25 more than the baddest of bad engines you could get in anything else (the street Hemi was 350 and the 440 Six Pack was 330, for example).
