If only it did 0-60mph in 9s... Other corrections, the engine is not the Ecotec from Opel. It's a much older unit, called Família I (Family I) in Brazil and is derived from the mid 1970's 1.4L Chevette (Kadett, in other markets). I believe it has the same bore-stroke dimensions as the Ecotec, but with a single overhead camshaft, only 8 valves and very short conrods, making it tremble and shake like it's going to fall apart in higher revs. Summarizing, an engine that was good in low revs, awful in high and drank petrol (or ethanol) like a V8.

Also, the SS version was just the standard 1.8L with fancy badges and body kit. GM didn't even bothered to firm up the suspension, and so it would probably loose most races against other hot hatches.

The Astra SS is much the same story: standard car, standard engine (although different from the Corsa's), lots of badges, bigger price tag.

Rubbish, but I'd like to have them in GT just for the curiosity

What did GM even have to gain for that level of name debasement? They didn't even sell SS cars abroad in the muscle car years.

Well, these were the years when GM started to fall apart in terms of reputation/appeal here in Brazil. Due to the lack of investment from GM's HQ, the Brazilian was left with old Opel cars that were ageing fast (this Corsa's platform was the youngest, being launched in 2002) and engines that were just very outdated, with no substitutions in sight.

As a result, the GM's Brazilian branch didn't have much to play with when the sales figures started to drop. Hence, the SS badge that was once successfully applied to the 70's Opala (derived from Opel Rekord + Chevy Impala) was reborn...

They did the same thing for the same reason in North America, but at least the US models had more powerful engines and equipment than the regular ones even if they were still junk.
