After a long and secretive development followed by a lengthy stay in the factory, the two final bodies of the original 5 Corvette Grand Sport Coupes were prepared for their one and only race: The 1964 12 Hours of Sebring. Unlike the first three however, they were both converted into roadsters. This was done in an effort to decrease pit times during driver changes. In addition to this, they were also fitted with pneumatic jacks, easy access oil/water fillers and big block engines. Despite their altered looks, both maintained many of the Coupe's features such as the rear mounted differential coolers and Weber carburators. During the Sebring race, A Sunoco-sponsored roadster driven by Dick Thompson was the fastest car on the track. However, the car would retired after it had a minor accident.

This would be a welcome addition to GT as well as the Corvette family, especially as a competitive companion to the Shelby Cobra coupe.
