The El Camino was introduced for the 1959 model year in response to the success of the Ford Ranchero. Unlike the Ranchero, the El Camino was based on an existing platform from the 1959 Chevrolet Brookwood 2-door station wagon (which was modified). It only came with one trim, using the exterior from the Bel-Air and the interior from a low-end Chevrolet Biscayne.

Specs:

Wheelbase - 119 in. (3022.6 mm)
Length - 210.9 in (5356.86 mm)
Engine - 348 cu in. (5.7 L) V8* (also available in 283 cu in (4.6 L) V8 and a 235 cu in (3.9 L) I6)
Horsepower - 315 HP*
Acceleration (0-60 mph / 0-96 km/h) - 7 seconds
Top Speed - estimated 130 mph (209.2 km/h)*

*From an El Camino that was used by Hot Rod Magazine during testing
