In 1976, IMSA got tired of watching funny foreign cars win all the races, so they opened up the rulebook to make the Chevy Monza competitive. From a very humble -- ugly -- production car with not much going for it, Dekon Engineering developed the car and Al Holbert won the IMSA Camel GT Championship in back to back seasons, 1976 and 77. And, if you think that wasn't much of an accomplishment, the Monzas beat the factory BMW team with drivers Hans Stuck, Brian Redman and Peter Gregg. And the development of the Monza basically eclipsed the Porsche 934 in the USA, forcing Porsche to develop the 935.

Holbert's #14 is retired in IMSA competition.
