I never thought I'd be doing this, but, congratulations to the Chicago White Sox. I'm opening this thread for you White Sox fans to celebrate. For you Astros fans, this is more of question marks. Being a Houstonian, my comments will be on the Astros, but your comments can be on what went wrong for the Astros, or what went right for the White Sox. I will begin with my thoughts, then you follow along if you choose to.
I normally say that if I actively watch a game, the team I may root for will probably lose. That's why when Houston was electric, I just stayed humble and quiet, since I'm not really a baseball guy. All I can say is that the Astros were neck-deep under 0.500, but they got it together to make the Wild Card bid. Afterwards, Atlanta = see you next season. Then St. Louis = payback's a b*tch ain't it? But facing Chicago's White Sox, I wasn't too confident. Yeah, I Bee-lieved, and they were the ultimate underdogs. The 2005 Houston Astros sort of reminds me of "Friday Night Lights." You know, when the Odessa-Permian Panthers of 1988 were having some troubles and had remote chances at making it to the Big Dance (of football). Then, they did well in their games, but eventually fell in the Championship Game. I tend to feel like the 2005 Houston Astros were the 1988 Permian Panthers of baseball, based on the "Friday Night Lights" example I've given. Love the Astros or hate them, you have to admit- "worst to first" would have been the biggest storyline of 2005. And to me, the Astros made us believe. They were losing game after game early on. They lose 18-3 to the Texas Rangers, get blanked by the St. Louis Cardinals, blown a Grand Slam to Colorado (I believe), but still... it's not how you start, it's how you finish. And finish they did, all the way to the World Series. I would have liked at least one game won by the Astros, even if they weren't going to take down the White Sox. Why? Winning a WS game gives you some credibility, even if you lose the entire series. You got there with a huge turnaround, now you need a win in the biggest game in the MLB... but it didn't happen. I'm actually saddened by this. "Better luck next year" may or may not cut it.
For the White Sox, good job. Congrats on the win and the sweep, though many of my fellow Houstonians would be upset after cheering their lungs out, all to see no games won despite the turnaround season. Reply on, please.
