The Chrysler Firepower is a Viper-based Corvette fighter.

Chrysler reveals first look at 2005 Detroit show concepts

Chrysler will likely turn up at the 2005 Detroit show with more concepts up its sleeve, but for now it has revealed two design studies that could pave the way for the return of a Jeep pickup truck and a Viper-based Corvette fighter.

The second concept, for now dubbed Firepower (Chrysler does not own the name and will need a new one prior to Detroit), is based on the V10 Viper’s architecture but uses the 6.1-liter, 425 hp, 420-lb-ft Hemi V8 that will see first light in the forthcoming 300C SRT-8. Again, officials say there are no production plans, but envision the car, which is reminiscent of Ford’s Shelby GR-1 concept, occupying the space between the Crossfire and (in theory) the ME412 in Chrysler’s performance portfolio.

Though the car is Viper-based—and Creed referenced Chevrolet’s Corvette as a key competitor (again, in theory)—the designers envision “Firepower” as more grand tourer than outright sports car; hence the softened suspension and five-speed automatic transmission. Brakes are 14-inch Brembos at all four corners, and the huge rubber measures 275/35 R19 up front, 335/30 R20 in back. Engineers estimate the car is capable of bolting from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds or less, and a 185 mph top speed.

Whether either car ever meets a production line, Chrysler has produced two concepts that would fill obvious holes in both Jeep’s and its own product lineup; don’t be surprised to see executives keeping careful watch on public reaction at Detroit in January.

They say it is based on the Viper which is true but it has many details refering to the Crossfire.

Bah. How badly could it possibly be styled. Heck, I'd buy even the odd crossfire if it had 6.1 L of Hemi (even faux-Hemi) spinning the rear wheels. 372 Hemi has a nice ring to it, no?

The mustang's prototype looked golden and then when I saw the production model my jaw dropped in disgust how badly the production car was. I've grown to like the production model overtime but first impressions were bad.

I wish they would put it in to production to replace the crossfire. The crossfire is such a sorry excuse for a sports car that it's actually slower than the 300.

Oh my gosh. A domestic car that actually doesn't look ugly to me (no, I'm not biased, they really all seem ugly to me, almost all of them)!! Looks nice. Although we only have 1 shot, the back of the car really seems like it looks good (big and beefy).

But remember the Crossfire in concept form? I liked that one, too! Then the production was released, doused down and borowed everything from a Mercedes that would end production in a matter of a year or so.

Is the chassis Viper-based or just the engine? If not, this could be the equivalent to the SL of what the the Crossfire is to the SLK (though it wouldn't be in the price range of the Corvette)

Anyway, it looks much better than a Crossfire. 👍

I actually like the name, I hope they end up sticking with it.

But, the lack of a manual transmission kills this car for me.

I don't see how it would be a Corvette fighter. Doesn't the Viper have the covered? I would think it competes more directly with the Caddy XLR, in which case the soft springs and slushbox make sense.

Its nice, but whats the point of this if they already have the viper doing the work?

Yeah, the prowler is such a joke, but this car actually looks pretty sick. The back has an aggressive look that reminds me of a 928. The 6.1 liter V8 is strong too. Does anyone know what the M.S.R.P. is on the new firepower? I'm guessing it will be priced right by a Corvette.
