A teenage gunman's plan to open fire on a US movie theatre showing The Hobbit was foiled when an off-duty sheriff's deputy chased and shot him on Sunday.

Police said Jesus Manuel Garcia, 19, pulled out a gun and followed terrified patrons from a Chinese restaurant in Texas where he worked into a car park and then into the movie theatre.

His gun initially jammed but Garcia was allegedly able to shoot one man before he was hit and dropped to the floor.

Lisa Castellano, an off-duty sheriff's deputy who was working as a security guard at the theatre, reportedly chased the gunman toward the back of the theatre and cornered him in a men's toilet before she shot and disarmed him.

Garcia had been looking for a woman he worked with at the restaurant and allegedly started shooting when he couldn't find her.

The incident happened two days after 20-year-old Adam Lanza stormed a school in Connecticut and shot dead 20 children and six adults.

Statistically, I have to assume, that this (man pulls gun, fires a shot or two, gun jams, and is taken down,) is far more common than someone spraying a whole bunch of people with an AR-15.

I don't know because you can't just look up those stats.

But how many cinemas have a cop whether on or off duty.

And now you must ask yourself - how many gunmen (man pulls gun, fires shot, gun jams and is taken down) versus how many gunmen (man pulls AR-15, sprays people to death.)

No clue.

Only crazy shootings I hear about are ones in the US and even then I do not pay much attention to them.

Great thing the idiot's gun jammed on him.

That said, the media is going to eat the gun industry tomorrow with this at the top.

How much do you want to bet this would have never been reported had it not been for Sandy Hook?

Anyways, sounds like someone can't handle rejection.

It's the dark truth of the corporate media though. They'll only show what the public wants to see.

But hey look! That guy in CT got 24 hour a day coverage for almost a week now. Copy cat and blaze of glory for international infamy.

Yeah, this 24 hour non stop coverage of the shootings is part of the problem IMO. People who would otherwise have just offed themselves in their basement are now going and doing these things for recognition. And then in the days following the shootings there's non stop coverage of things like these which probably happen quite often all ove the world, and are only reported because #guncontrolnow is the flavour of the week.

Apparently there is a planned cease-fire of video game shooting...or some daft campaign is trying to do.

I really don't see what this would achieve.

I guess this is what I was trying to get at: there must be incidents like this (lone gunman gets off a shot, blahblahblah) all the time - yet suddenly it's ....news!

The media is trying to get us all depressed so we'll all buy more booze, chocolates and presents to celebrate the holiday spirit. It's a conspiracy by the damn liquor companies man!

OH MY GOD THE WORLD IS GOING TO END NOW THAT JESUS IS KILLING PEOPLE.

Lol. Sorry, I had to. Couldn't resist.

I'm glad the off duty cop got him in the knick of time.

You have got to be kidding me. I'm tired of the whole "video games are the reason of shootings" idea. Didn't OP clearly state that he was looking for someone. This shooting probably happened for a personal reason.

LCBO does that with their wonderful magazines, anyway.

Oh, right, you don't get those in BC. :P

Ta-da.

And this is another problem we can't seem to get over: wild disregard of previously established facts.

Cool graph, bro. Now explain to me how it supports your argument that video games are the reason for gun violence. I see no trend in this graph that suggests a rise in video game sales correlates with a rise in gun violence.

Cool quote, bro. Now explain to me how your quote supports the thesis that I even posited an argument.

I posted a graph, not words. Perhaps that graph was my point.

People getting confused between fantasy and reality.

But if that is the case the Netherlands should have most gun crimes

I don't think the point of the online shooter cease fire thing is to support the "video games are the reason of shootings" idea. If anything, it's to show that gamers aren't inherently insane bloodthirsty out-of-control mass murderers.

Or in other words, it's meant to show that the vast majority of gamers have three little things called "sanity", "self-control", and "sympathy". So it's actually nice idea... too bad I doubt they'll get a whole lot of support.

I'd participate, but I don't normally play online shooters to begin with.

Actually, you posted a sarcastic "Ta-da" from which I infered that you were attempting to make it obvious and blatent that the quoted post was incorrect.

Maybe next time, you should instead clearly state your position on the topic, or just say you that you haven't taken a side instead of just throwing out a graph and expecting others to make an inference on the entire meaning of your post.

Maybe the person T-Bagged him in CoD after killing him? Yeah that sounds ok, we'll run that story and make every guy who games sound like monsterous killers. Just like everyone who plays Assassins creed are amazing free-runners and everyone who plays GT5 speed on the streets. the news make me laugh :)

Well, if the entirety of my post is a graph, and from the graph (which you correctly read) it is implied there is no general corelation whatsoever between gun violence and videogame consumption, I think "my position" is stated and so moot to further elaborate upon.
