Citroën/Peugeot PSA Hybrid Air Car, 2013

INFORMATION
Peugeot and Citroën have announced that they too are building a car that uses compressed air as an energy source. However, the car they are designing uses a hybrid system which also uses a gasoline engine (which is used for propelling the car over 70 km/h, or when the compressed air tank has been depleted).

How it Works
An 82-hp 1.2-liter gasoline engine provides most of the power, driven through an epicyclic automatic transmission. During deceleration, the wheels' energy drives a hydraulic pump that pushes hydraulic fluid into an accumulator and compresses the nitrogen gas within. When the car needs to accelerate, the system works in the opposite way: The pressurized nitrogen gas pushes the hydraulic fluid, which drives a hydraulic motor connected to the transmission.

Driving Modes
Gas only: Intended for highway driving
Air only: For speeds below 43 mph, where the engine stops and hydraulics power the wheels 80 percent of the time
Combined: Powered by the gas engine and hydraulic motor

• Top Speed = 175 km/h

TRANSMISSION
• Epicyclic automatic transmission

Range
• 100 - 129 km's of standard driving on Compressed Air
• 1000 - 1290 km's (620 - 800 miles) of standard driving on Combined
• Fuel Consumption 2.9 Litres per 100km (80 mpg)

Cool idea. It would be interesting to hear if it is silent off of the line until the petrol engine kicks in. I heard the Toyota TS030 do that at Goodwood, complete silence as it launched off of the grid, and then a massive bellow as the combustion engine kicked in. :D
