This movie is a must see for everyone here who isn't easily shocked by movies. I bought this movie a while ago, while I never saw anything of it before. I did read reviews, and I must say without a doubt that it deserves all the high ratings.


It is a Brazilian movie, spoken in Portuguese, but that shouldn't ruin the experience from watching it. The movie takes you into the slums of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro I believe, where child gangs rule the streets. The movie is brutal, bloody and sickening at times, but very well shot and based on the real situation there in the 70's. The acting is great, even though the main characters aren't played by professional actors. The actors in the movie are from the region it is shot, which adds to the realism of the movie.

I can go on and on about this movie, but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. All I want to see is, go see this movie if you didn't see it already.
 
I saw this movie on DVD while back. It is an awesome film, and if you're an type of person who are bored by foreign films, this might change your mind. It reminded me a lot of Scarface and Godfather, except it has realistic (very young)gangstas. Story of this movie is so real, it really could happen to you.................... unless you live in Montana.
 
I haven´t watched this movie yet, but everyone says great things about it. I should rent it sometime. I usually don´t like to watch Brazilian movies because of poor acting (IMO), but Cidade de Deus (City of God) seems like one of a kind.
 
I have it, but as with most of my movies I haven't got around to watching it yet. With all the comments that I've heard I reckon it's one that I'll be watching soon.
 
I actually rented this last night after a buddy recommended I might like it. He was right, I was rather impressed by the movie, even though I dislike films that are subtitled. But it was such a good movie.

I love movies with subtitles. That´s how I´ve learned to speak English. :dopey:

In the U.S., nobody watches subtitled films. 👎 It's very rare for general viewers to go out to see foreign films here. My guess is that in other countries, people are all used to subtitles, because good films aren't always in their own language.

P.S. I'm an big fan of foreign films, personally. :)
 
Over here most movies are subtitled indeed, I'm glad to because I prefer listening to the original voices / text. Synchronized voices in your own language while someone's mouth moves completely differently are whack.

Yup. To me, even when it's a very high quality dub, like in the Brotherhood of the Wolf, it's still awkward.
 
Yeah, it usually ruins the movie, specially if it´s a comedy. I mean, dubbing Jim Carrey or Chris Tucker takes all the fun out of it, it HAS to be their voices.
 
I thought this film was great. In fact, I loved the soundtrack that much that I bought it. '70s-styled funksploitation instrumentals and Brazilian soul. 👍

I'll be keeping an eye open for films directed by Fernando Meirelles from now on too.
 
Back
