City Rivalries

Just to know, post here some city rivalries you have acknowledged
I'll Start with one concerning my city:
Guimarães-Braga,
Pretty simple, Guimarães is the birthplace of the nation and the people from Braga don't like we got the spotlight. They call us Spanish, we strike back by calling them Moroccan.

Don't know if something like this was already created...

Dewsbury, England and Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe.

Cannot stand each other.

Pretty much any two cities in America that are in the same conference or division of any sporting league. The other city is full of morons, but the initiator is filled with bed-wetters, and so it goes. This is because all rivalries are always logically-derived and never manufactured for showmanship.

Newcastle/Geordies and Sunderland/Mackems.
Makes for some interesting football derbies :scared:

My small town of West Carrollton is rivals with neighboring Miamisburg in high school sports, especially fooball. Pirates vs. Vikings. Pirates are cooler anyway.

WC is a suburb of Dayton, and the University of Dayton Flyers are rivals with Xavier University from Cincinnati, and generally anybody from Cincy.

On a larger scale, all of us in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky are fans of Cincinnati Reds baseball. We're big rivals with the St. Louis Cardinals. We don't care much about Cleveland because they can't win anything anyway.

They aren't cities but Corsham-Chippenham rivalry is pretty strong. As well as Corsham-Melksham and The World-Melksham. :D

Oxford - Swindon is pretty intense, especially when they play football against each other.

They're like the English and the Scots. Or the Welsh and the Scots. Or Scots and other Scots.

Don't forget the Welsh and the Welsh. We have our own North/South divide.

Flint and Deeside
Wrexham and Chester
Deeside and Chester
Bangor and Caernarfon
Wrexham vs. Cardiff & Swansea
Rhyl and Prestatyn

Vilnius and Kaunas can sometimes be intense :) Especially when it comes to basketball. Wearing an opposed team's livery in certain districts of the city, especially at night would not be very wise ;)

Vancouver and Toronto. Torontonians complain about our rain, Vancourites tell them that at least they don't have to shovel it. Rinse and repeat.

More like the rest of Canada vs. Toronto .

Instead of "at least we don't have to.shovel it" it's more like "at least we don't need the army to shovel it for us".

 Yep.

Also, English Canada and French Canada. :D

Hamiltonions almost all despise Toronto. All about 'dat working class pride (just don't tell them that the biggest employer in town these days is Mac, not the mills).

Actually, Hamilton and Burlington folks rarely mix well either, come to think of it.

Ann Arbor and Columbus, the U of M and OSU rivalry is not only the biggest in college footbal, but easily one of the biggest in all of sports. Also Detroit against Chicago or Minneapolis in anything we both play.

Melbourne and Sydney.
Enough so that Canberra was formed to become the capital of Aus to stop the bickering as to which city should be capital.

I've never bought into it though as it's obvious Melbourne is better on all fronts. :P

Cheers Shaun.

+1 for Melbourne

London, London, London, and London. North vs South vs East vs West.

London vs. The Rest Of The Country

Especially media-wise. It's not a 'national' issue/crisis/emergency unless London is even slightly affected.

Having lived in Sydney for years I can tell you nobody there knows, or cares about any rivalry with Melbourne, except for a very small group of inherited-wealth B-list wannabes who are not known to 99% of the rest of Sydney, and considered an embarrassment by the other 1%.

Now I live in Canberra and we have no rivals. We just nod and grin when some other city tells us we suck. The less people that like us = the less people come here to live = our peak hour traffic stays at 40 min long.

Leicester vs. Coventry is always a real derby match.

Also the (Leicester) Tigers vs. Saints (Northampton) in rugby has always produced some real gritty games.

Its pretty intense sometimes watching both games.

In all honestly it's the same here nowadays.
Used to be different but now it's certain morons in the media who carry on with it.
My last line was a throwaway line.

Can't say I've been to Canberra but I do want to make the trip for the War Museum. Have you been and is it worth the trip?

Cheers Shaun.
