Ok, I want to make a picture, but so that when I put it on a background, the corners will match the background.

Like with someo f epic's avatars, they have holes in them, and the background in the whole will change to whatever the background he puts the picture on is.

Ex: I want to make a circular image, but when I save it, it saves it with as a square, making the corners white (as the background). But I want like a clear background. You know what I mean?

Here is an example of what I mean:
logo.gif

is it just as simple as saving it as a .gif rather than .jpg?

Yes, you have to save as a gif, and make sure your background's transparent.

Yes. :)

Just make sure that you set "matte" to clear (otherwise you might get a fuzzy white border), and choose "index transperancy" instead of "alpha" or "none". (Note that I'm talking about Fireworks... I'm not sure what Photoshop has).

Yea, in adobe just make a new image and click Transparent for the background cuz on mine it is white by default.. and just save it as gif and check off the box that says transparent 👍

You have to save it as either a gif or png. GIF is recommended if you want a small filesize. PNG is an uncompressed file format, so saving it as png will give you a perfect quality image, at the expense of filesize.
