In a surprise announcement, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment says it will bring the very first Steven Spielberg film to high-def disc this November with a 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.'

Due in stores November 13 (on both Blu-ray and as a standard-def DVD re-issue), the 30th Anniversary Edition will be the first home video release to include all three versions of the Spielberg classic: the original 1977 theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical Special Edition, and Spielberg's own 1998 Director's Cut.
Wow. The first Spielberg movie out on a HD format. And it's one of my favourites too. Along with Blade Runner winter is looking good for HD movies!!

Is there a thread to post announced HD movie release dates?

I wont get it. That movie scares the poopie out of my kids. lol

I have the DVD, which still looks fantastic. Meh...

Now if I only had an HD-TV...

Good news that they're finally updating some of these classics... but will it be re-mastered?

Re-mastered as in touched up like the Star Wars Original Trilogy? Unlikely. But the PQ will be enhanced and cleaned up (the last DVD release of Clos Encounters looked pretty good) and I'm betting the sound will be LPCM (though not 7.1 unfortunately). So as long as it has a good digital transfer from the last re-mastered print it should be good. I'm just hoping more Spielberg movies star coming out (and who knows, maybe the Star Wars films too).
