Hi, newbish question coming up, my shifter is being delivered today, and ive never driven a real car before, is there any advice you can share on technique or anything before I try to teach myself tonight? Thanks.

Well, the only games that punish a poor upshift on the pc are LFS and iRacing (and rfactor w/ geargrind mod). You may find yourself taking some corners @ 90% throttle in 4th gear instead of 50%throttle in 3rd gear sometimes just to not have to deal with shifting when battling.

Ok thanks, I should have been clear that Ill be playing mainly GT5 among other PS3 games. thanks for the link too, it didnt occur to me to visit you tube.

Just don't try and go flat-out from the off, just keep learning and the speed will come. Don't be dis-heartened if you find it a struggle at first as it will eventually be second-nature.

Be patient :) Think of using the clutch like writing with your non-dominant hand. At first, you're pedal control with your left leg will be pretty sloppy (even if you know exactly what to do), but time and practice will see you get better as your brain configures itself to move that big slab of muscle and bone with precision

The good thing is that you get to practice in the comfort of your own home. No stalling out at busy intersections or rolling into the car behind you when you're trying to get going on a hill ;)

Make sure you have a good flexible right knee and ankle... it helps for those heel toes! that might be a little advanced but look it up.

OK i'm in the same boat except I drive a real clutch everyday. The big question is which foot to break with??! In real life I use right foot, left foot only for clutch,( I can even heal toe when I want) But on my racing wheels ive been left foot braking as its gotta be an advantage.

So now what, how do really fast sim drivers, that use a clutch, handle breaking?

Ps I'm amazed how much better the clutch works in GT5P than every made it sound, works really good actually.

Same here...

I'm trying (hard) to get out of the paddle gearing and get into the clutch world but still not big progress... Too much lose of time on gear descending before a sharp turn. The only way, for the moment is to leave out the in between gears.
But in the other hand, there are some other (unspecified for the moment) elements which are gaining time...:)

Better than...?

Great tips here guys, thanks, keep them coming! I had a try at it last night in prologue, what made it harder I think is the fact that I have'nt got a comfortable wheel set up, so I started by just learning where the gears were :)

Everyone who knew how to drive told me to heel toe downshift, but i kept failing, it helped to just not blip the throttle and downshift normally until it became natural, then I just added a blip.

God don't remind me :ouch:

Although I also have it on the program to fully use my G25, including the clutch, I must admit I did not feel ready for that till now.

Just to be clear, my objective is to drive fast:
1) Mastering slow in, fast out, is still delivering results.
2) Trying different driving lines is still delivering results.

So it is not a priority, but I sure would like to start "soon".

If your objective is to prepare for real cars, just do it simple and slow to start with. You will get the principle but the mechanics of a real car are still different (actually I need to adapt to every different car I drive, but adaptation goes fast with experience).

===================

Edit: actually part of my habit comes from WRS where the cluch is not allowed since it gives unfair advantage on TT.

Hey GTP vince were in the same division in the WRS! Thats a great point about not being able to use clutch in WRS and other compititions. I think I will only use clutch for driving in GT mode and Arcade mode, And do hard core time trialing and online play with the floopy paddles and left foot braking. I guess If Aryton Senna had no problem going back and forth then I will learn too!

I am the same as you, never drove a real car so heres what I did.
Started with manual no clutch on Daytona, then clutch Daytona (first time heel-toe but that was a fail)
High Speed Ring, no clutch, HS Ring clutch.
It then became easier so I went to London with clutch, I am right foot braking, easing into heel-toe.
