So it is my belief that if in real life you have driven the car you are using in the game it makes you more adapt to understanding how the car handles and its limits.

Do you Think its all in my head or a placebo affect because maybe I try harder due to nostalgic reasons, and want to win with the car I use to own...

or do you believe handling the car in real life would equate to better performance in game?

Placebo. Unless you have no experience or knowledge of any other car. (e.g. You've only driven a front wheel drive in real life and have no idea what oversteer is.) This would mean you're just really bad at driving other cars and not quite as bad driving the car you have owned.
