GTPlanet, this will be the second week of 2006. After this week, it will be January 15th... my 23rd Birthday. Before my 23rd, time to cover basketball while I'm still 22. Saturday was insane, wasn't it? Many highly-ranked teams falling. That is, all the teams who played. So here you go.

LAST WEEK:

* Upset Saturday! Iowa got Illinois, Miami got Maryland, Kansas embarassed Kentucky, not to mention a few upsets on the women's side. And oh yes, Washington losing to Washington State (disappointing). Washington's only two losses came aginst Pac-10 opponents. * Coppin State finally wins a game! They defeated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. * Oakland gets win #6, taking down Chicago State. * Around my way, Rice won a game a few nights ago against Princeton. The Houston Cougars downed the best Independent team in D1, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. * Coming into this week, four unbeatens remain- Duke, Villanova, Pittsburgh, and Florida. I don't want to give anything way, but here's a hint about today's Sunday Sampler. You see the four unbeatens? Well, one of them fell, and it will be reflected in the Sampler. I hate this song to death, but are you ready for your first games of this week? Then bring 'em out, and let's do another week!

SUNDAY SAMPLER, MEN
* West Virginia at Villanova (91-87; West Virginia) *Upset!*
* #7 Michigan State at #24 Wisconsin (82-63; WISCONSIN) *Upset!*
* UMBC at Vermont (68-59; VERMONT)
* Marist at Loyola College (78-75; LOYOLA COLLEGE)
* #1 Duke at Wake Forest (82-64; Duke)
* #11 Boston College at Georgia Tech (60-58; GEORGIA TECH)

SUNDAY SAMPLER, WOMEN
* #2 Duke at #6 Maryland (86-68; Duke)
* #19 Boston College at #25 Virginia Tech (67-62; VIRGINIA TECH) *Upset!*
* UCF at Rice (66-52; RICE)
* Southern Mississippi at Houston (92-58; HOUSTON)
* #20 Vanderbilt at Arkansas (52-51, OT; ARKANSAS)

Kind of interesting what in-conference play can do to you, eh? In addition to these scores, I would like to personally congratulate coach Tom Shirley. Back on January 5th, 2006, Coach Tom Shirley was responsible for acheiving win #500 as head coach for the Philadelphia. The Lady Rams defeated Felician College 90-81 on the road. If you follow the Philadelphia Rams Women's Team, their next five games are conference matches against Caldwell College 1/10/2006, New Jersey Institute of Technology 1/12/2006, at Nyack College 1/14/2006, Holy Family University 1/17/2006, and at Georgian Court University 1/19/2006. They are all games in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Again, a rather late congratulations to the Philadelphia Lady Rams head coach, Tom Shirley.

And remember, next week is a new week. So, let's do a new week of college hoops!

MONDAY'S GAMES
Conference Play is under way, and if Saturday was any indication, it should be hellishly frantic, especially with big rivalry games later this season. So let's see how you boys play college b-ball!

[B}MEN'S DIVISION[/B]
Big Monday in the house! We start with the Big East.

* #25 Cincinatti at #4 Connecticut
This game was one of two ESPN games pitting two ranked Big East schools. It was easy money for Connecticut, as the Huskies were done blowing out the Cincinatti Bearcats. (70-59; CONNECTICUT)

* #8 Texas at Iowa State
The other doubleheader game on ESPN was Texas and Iowa State. Iowa shocked Illinois, but can Iowa's rivals shock one of their in-conference opponents? That's what the Cyclones were hoping for, but the Texas Longhorns didn't give Iowa State a chance. (78-58; Texas)

* Howard at Hampton
Here are two HBCUs, or Historically-Black Colleges and Universities. It's Howard from Washington D.C., and Hampton of Hampton, VA(?). These are two MEAC schools, or the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Hampton had a whirlwind year of football this past 1-AA Playoffs. Now, the Pirates hope to bring that success to the hardwood. They met up against Howard, sort of a middle-of-the-road team. Just don't tell that to the Bison, because they'll drain money balls inside or outside the paint... just not tonight. Hampton rolls. (65-48; HAMPTON)

* San Francisco at Loyola Marymount
There are about 326 Division 1 basketball schools, and I had to choose two others to fill this space. Well, why not the state of California? The college buzz from Cali was the classic 2006 Rose Bowl encounter. While the home state fell short, now they are jacked about basketball. These two may not be the class of Californian Division 1 basketball, but they are surely two of California's talent. Among the two of them, only San Francisco was a former National Champion. I don;'t know if Loyola Marymount used to be one, but be very assured that the Dons still carry that fire and hope to be on the National Champion stage first chance they get. If not Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount's been dismal. Just like the football juggernaut University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University is also located in Los Angeles, CA. They don't have the star power, but they do have Lions. Dons and Lions. You ready for this matchup in L.A.? You'd better be. Dismal Loyola Marymount may have been, but all that matters is the win. Loyola Marymount rocked Los Angeles in extras. (84-75, 2OT; LOYOLA MARYMOUNT)

* California-Davis at Louisville
While Cincinatti and Connecticut were busy killing each other, we go to another Big East squad meeting someone who's not a Big East team. Louisville's big dog is Taquan Dean, but could he deliver Cardinal punishment to the Californian opponents? Those opponents happen to be the University of California-Davis Aggies. Those Aggies look aggie-gressive to take on Louisville and stun the Louisville, KY boys. Who sunk the money balls to defeat the other? No contest- Louisville got her done. (81-58; LOUISVILLE)

* Southern Utah at Oakland
What do you say we find out if Oakland can get to seven wins on the year? Good. Our own "BlazinXtreme" is an Oakland boy, so let's see if his Golden Grizzlies got it done. They'll have to do it against a bunch of fowl who call themselves the Thunderbirds. That's right. The Southern Utah University Thunderbirds. Don't like their nickname? Tell that to them. But, they're going from Cedar City, UT to Oakland, MI (southeastern Michigan). They are both from the south in their respective states, but one's going south for damn sure. Sadly, Southern Utah had the last laugh. Only positive for some of their recent losses (if at all) is that most have been decided by 6 points or less. Close losses. But still, a loss is a loss, and these boys can only get better come March. (76-73; Southern Utah)

* Central Connecticut State at Sacred Heart
Don't confuse Central Connecticut State with Duke. Sure, that's a broad comparison, but they share the same nickname- Blue Devils. Central Connecticut State met some Pioneers with Sacred Hearts. Those hearts didn't miss a beat as the Blue Devils fell hard on their faces. (74-71; SACRED HEART)

* Long Beach State at California Polytechnical
The Long Beach State 49ers struck gold in California Polytechnical, downing the Mustangs by 13. (79-66; Long Beach State)

* Oral Roberts at Valparaiso
The best team in the Mid-Continent are the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. They shown why against the Valparaiso Crusaders. (80-60; Oral Roberts)

* Western Illinoie at UMKC
The Kangaroos got it done tonight against Western Illinois' Leathernecks. (72-62; MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY)

* Coppin State at Florida A&M
I learned that Coppin State is from the same city as Towson and UMBC- Baltimore, MD. Coppin State College is the Maryland bunch as they welcomed the Florida A&M Rattlers. In the end, remember how dismal Coppin State were early in the season? Well, they win again. (75-70; Coppin State)

* Gonzaga at Santa Clara
If you follow college football, Gonzaga hasn't had a team since 1941, and Santa Clara had their last hurrah in 1993. Now on to hoops. The West Coast Conference may not be the most glamourous of conferences, but they do have one shining star that outshines many other stars in the sky. If the West Coast Conference was a collection of stars, the Gonzaga Bulldogs would be the Morning Star. How fitting we talk about stars because we have a night game on the west coast. Can Santa Clara outshine Gonzaga? The Broncos hope they can do more than outshine Gonzaga, they want the upset, baby! Did they get it? (81-68; Gonzaga)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
* #(top 15)Oklahoma at #4 Ohio State
Wait... this isn't a Conference Game. Does it have to be? No, so what are you squawking at me about, player? The Lady Sooners were denied the upset as the Ohio State Lady Buckeyes got it done. (75-71; OHIO STATE)

* #17 Minnesota at Indiana
These ladies are ready to hit the hardwood in Hoosier country. I'm sure the Lady Golden Gophers of Minnesota think their mascot is cute, but nothing's sweeter than a win against a Big Ten team. We find out who got it done and who pulled the trick. Those cute Golden Gophers won by a nickel. Those furry rodents got it done in Indiana. (69-64; Minnesota)

* Howard at Hampton
After the men were done disposing Howard, the Hampton Lady Pirates extended Howard's disappointing night. The Lady Bison didn't have enough Red Bull to take down Hampton. (62-74; HAMPTON)

* North Carolina-Greensboro at Georgia Southern
The Lady Spartans hit the road to Georgia Southern. Sadly, the Lady Eagles sent North Carolina-Greensboro packing early. (74-63; GEORGIA SOUTHERN)

By the way, FoolKiller, only as long as the loss isn't to somebody like Coppin State, Savannah State, Pepperdine, Campbell, or anyone in Division 2 or 3, then it isn't PURELY disappointing. It is still a sad loss for your Wildcats in Lawrence, KS. More scores to come!

TUESDAY'S GAMES
Want some basketball? It's Super Tuesday in ESPN speak, but some other super games were on tap. So let's see who dribbled the rock around the court...

MEN'S DIVISION
You know what? I'm going to start with Kentucky, with Wildcat basketball fan "FoolKiller." Let's see if his boys can get it done as we begin another day of coverage.

"Welcome Back, Morris!" Vanderbilt at Kentucky
SEC basketball. Unless you're talking about Kentucky or maybe Tennessee, it's not as interesting as the ACC or the massive Big East. Not to worry. Kentucky is ready to light up your television and this post. What's not to love about Wildcats' basketball? Well, if you're going on Saturday's performance at Kansas... not much to cheer about, unless you're from or a fan of Louisville. The Wildcats want to put the embarassment in Lawrence behind them and play college hoops the old-fashioned way- at the Rupp Arena. Who wants to play forty minutes with the blue and white? Why, Vanderbilt of course! The Commodores are looking forward to crushing Kentucky and making sure they never reach the NCAA Tourney. Sure, it may be January, but as Fort Minor says, "March begins today." Win, or go home, you dig? Randolph Morris is done serving his suspension, so he'll try to give his Wildcats a little lift. The wonderful voice of Brad Nessler has the call alongside Jimmy Dykes for this ESPN game. You have to believe Kentucky for this game. Inside the fifth minute, Vandy was leading Kentucky 8-2. Not a good start. Make it 10-2 as the Commodores were first to double figures on the scoreboard. Vandy has never won at Kentucky in 31 games. Kentucky last lost to Vanderbilt in 1974. It ended 23-20 Vanderbilt at the Half. Randolph Morris may be back, but Kentucky couldn't come back against Vanderbilt. Sadder news for 'Cats fans is that Kentucky lost two(?) straight. (57-52; Vanderbilt)

* North Carolina at Virginia Tech
There's nothing like college basketball in the state of North Carolina. As long as college football isn't dominating as their basketball, then that's all many college sports fans will care about. North Carolina-Wilmington is good, NC-Asheville and NC-Greensboro is okay... but why not the big campus? The North Carolina Tar Heels are the biggest and best basketball team in NC that isn't Duke. Tar Heel Blue is hitting Virginia tonight. The Hokies welcomed the boys from Raleigh-Durham. The score was 34-30 in favor of North Carolina. There was a controversial non-call in which after NC connected a long-range bomb to make it 34-30. The non-call was the ball kind of being stuck in the net, giving VT very little time to shoot a Hail Mary or get close enough to pull off an easier three-point shot. That aside, the game continues. (64-61; North Carolina)

* Fairfield at Rider
The Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference opens its doors to two teams ready to do battle on the hardwood. They may not be the sharpest conference in America, but many of the teams are within vincinity of major cities. The southernmost MAAC team is Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. Northernmost is probably Niagara or even Fairfield. Fairfield, CT's boys are ready for action. The Stags want to impale their antlers into the Rider Broncs. (85-81; Fairfield)

* Georgia Tech at Centenary
One team has struggled, the other struggled a lot. Whereas one hasn't been too hot, one's been ice cold. The better of the two teams is the pride of Atlanta, GA... the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Those Yellow Jackets are swarming into Shrevport, LA with a school you've never heard of unless you follow the Mid-Continent conference. The Louisiana school here is Centenary College. Centenary is in the same conference as Valparaiso, Southern Utah, Chicago State, IUPUI, and Oakland among others. Centenary has some true gentlemen. In fact, the Gents can be more than just loyal young men, they can play basketball... even if their losing record says otherwise. Will Centenary pull the trick? At one point, GT put up 21 points in the first half, while Centernary was in single-digit figures. (85-69; Georgia Tech)

* Missouri at Oklahoma
Ready for some Big XII basketball? If you're coming back from celebrating Texas' football victory, you'll be proud to know that Texas doesn't have Vince Young on the Men's hoops team. You will know that Missouri is one of the most talented teams in the Big XII. Their team has struggled a bit in recent times, yet the Tigers can still remain solid. They key component to Oklahoma losing was a silly Defensive Foul outside the arc. Missouri went on to connect two of the three free ones, and Oklahoma lost down the stretch. (71-69; Missouri) *upset!*

* #17 Wisconsin at Minnesota
The Barn had its first game in February 1928. Decades pass, now Minnesota faces the Wisconsin Badgers- unbeaten in the Big Ten. If home field advantage means anything, the Golden Gophers have a chance. The score was 25-17 as #17 Wisconsin was leading the Golden Gophers. Inside of 1 minute to go, Minnesota only trailed by one as it was 60-59. In the end, Minnesota needed a win... and they didn't get it. (64-62; Wisconsin)

* Stony Brook at Dartmouth
We're going with New England now. We have Stony Brook and Dartmouth College. If you follow American racing talent, Speed Channel F1 analyst, Bob Varsha, is a Dartmouth alum. The Big Green aren't really the best team in America, even considering about 15 or 16 years ago, they finished winless. I think the Stony Brook Seawolves aren't used to losing. And they didn't lose tonight as Dartmouth falls again. They are probably the worst Ivy League basketball team. (51-48; Stony Brook)

* Buffalo at Toledo
Buffalo, New York and Toledo, Ohio. We got the Mid-American Conference. Toledo is the bigger football power, but is their basketball team up to snuff? There's no NBA about it, but the Rockets are looking to be as big as... well, the Houston Rockets of the NBA. While this isn't the next level, they hope to Rocket past the Buffalo Bulls. The Rockets did their job perfectly. (73-70; TOLEDO)

* The Citadel at Davidson
If I'm not mistaken, both schools are South Carolina programs. So, let's talk about Citadel and Davidson. The Citadel, for what I know, is a military academy. It's kind of like what Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is like. The Citadel is protected by brave Bulldogs who serve their nation and their school. But Davidson College's Wildcats are ready to do some damage. Do some damage? Ha! They beat The Citadel real good... or really bad. (85-49; DAVIDSON)

* Mount St. Mary's at Saint Francis
We have Mount St. Mary's College and Saint Francis University(?). The Mountaineers of The Mount looked to outshine the Red Flash of Pennsylvania's St. Francis University. The boys in blue got it done. (84-56; Mount St. Mary's)

* #18 North Carolina State at #15 Boston College
Embarassment or upset? North Carolina State's Wolfpack devoured the higher-ranked B.C. Eagles. (78-60; North Carolina State)

* Akron at Western Michigan
The Akron Zips were zippy and fresh against Western Michigan's Broncos. (66-55; Akron)

* Marist at Liberty
The Red Foxes of the MAAC's Marist defeated the Liberty Flames. (83-69; Marist)

* Monterrey Tech at Texas Pan-American
GTPlanet, we have a little international action. The team you probably know better is the Texas Pan-American Broncs. The other team is a Mexican team looking to make their way into America. I've learned Monterrey Tech's nickname is the Monterrey Tech Borregos. In the end, the boys from Mexico returned to Mexico with a crushing defeat. (63-44; TEXAS PAN-AMERICAN)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
For the ladies, we have three Big East matches.

* Connecticut at Seton Hall
They've lost two games, but the Connecticut Lady Huskies made sure they didn't lose another game as the Seton Hall Lady Pirates fell. (93-55; Connecticut)

* Marquette at Notre Dame
This was perhaps the most thrilling Women's Hoops game tonight. The Marquette Lady Golden Eagles were denied the upset against Notre Dame's Lady Fighting Irish. Close loss. (67-65, 2OT; NOTRE DAME)

* Syracuse at Villanova
The Villanova Lady Wildcats purred and meowed to take down the Syracuse Lady Orange. (72-55; VILLANOVA)

* North Carolina-Asheville at Longwood
The Longwood Lady Lancers are all smiles as they downed the North Carolina-Asheville Lady Bulldogs. (77-71; LONGWOOD)

* Kansas at Colorado
Colorado's Lady Buffaloes got a big win against the Kansas Lady Jayhawks. (74-65; COLORADO)

In the Sports and Fitness\Basketball Forums, look for some of my specialty threads, as I'll try to offer up as much commentary as I can and specials like I do with college football. Most recent one is about Philadelphia's Big Five. So, check them out if you're into the college basketball scene.

(57-52; Vanderbilt)
Two straight losses for the first time in 4 years. A loss to Vandy at Rupp for the first time in 32 years. Maybe we should just pack it in.

We started out good but somewhere along the way something is putting the team in a funk. If they don't get out of it by conference tournament time then it is over and Tubby needs to think about finding a new job because cat fans won't stand for this.

WEDNESDAY'S GAMES
It's another night of action. I hope you're ready!

MEN'S DIVISION
* Maryland at Duke
Last season, Maryland upset Duke at Comcast Arena. Now, Duke wants nothing more (76-52; DUKE)

* Mississippi State at #2 Florida
The Florida Gators remain unbeaten as Mississippi State's Bulldogs weren't up to snuff in this blowout. (75-60; FLORIDA)

* #3 Villanova at Rutgers
#1 unbeaten, #2 unbeaten, what about #3? Same story. The Villanova Wildcats hung on in Overtime to win (84-78, OT; Villanova)

* #5 Memphis at East Carolina
College Sports Television (CSTV) had the call, and Memphis' Tigers delivered. The East Carolina Pirates weren't too sharp for the Tigers. I think one source has Memphis advancing as far as the Elite Eight. Let's hope they make it there, or higher come March. They've only lost twice so far and won 14 games. Well put together team Memphis is. (77-67; Memphis)

* Baylor at Texas Tech
The Baylor Bears lost to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. About time for Texas Tech, but Baylor's women's team would be in action. Find out about that in the Women's games. (7?-6?; TEXAS TECH)

* Denver at Northern Colorado
Oh my... this would have been an upset. Thankfully, the Denver Pioneers denied the Northern Colorado Bears any chance at an upset in this close fight. (79-73; Denver)

* Indiana at Michigan State
The Michigan State Spartans pulled the upset as there are plenty of upset Hoosiers back in Bloomington, IN. (87-73; MICHIGAN STATE)

* #16 Ohio State at Purdue
I never realized Ohio State has such a good basketball team. When I think Ohio State, I'm thinking football, but the Buckeyes' basketball unit is every bit as good as their fotoball program. They've shown their grace against the Purdue Boilermakers, who are normally not a bad Big Ten basketball team. (80-63; Ohio State)

* Saint Louis at George Washington
The George Washington Colonials have been a sharp team, and their next target were the boys from the Great Midwest. Former Conference USA team, Saint Louis, challenged the George Washington Colonials. They Colonials defeated the St. Louis Bilikens. It took Overtime to decide it. (-; )

* Georgetown at #23 West Virginia
Georgetown has a nice history of basketbal talent. Too bad none of that Hoya talent showed against the #23 Mountaineers. (68-61; WEST VIRGINIA)

* Syracuse at Notre Dame
Gerry McNamara was clutch all night for the Syracuse Orange as they sent Notre Dame back to their dorm rooms in agony. (88-82; Syracuse)

* Texas A&M at Oklahoma State
Oklahoma would hold on by a slim margin to win. Much less hold on period. (-; OKLAHOMA STATE)

* Penn State at Northwestern
The Northwestern Wildcats took a saddening loss to one of the Big Ten's least glamourous basketball teams- Penn State. The Nittany Lions got it done bigtime.

* Bucknell at American
Ready for the Patriot League? I think both teams are proud to be American, only thing is that American LOVES being American. And if that means being an American Eagle (or wearing American Eagle Outfitters...), then so be it, right? The Bucknell Bison don't like playing by the rules or being underrated. Well, the Patriot League's best team defeated American. America the Beautiful, but this wasn't a beautiful loss. (58-50; Bucknell)

* Navy at Lehigh
Here is a second Patriot League game. The Lehigh Mountain Hawks tamed the Navy Midshipmen. (65-58; LEHIGH)

* Wake Forest at Clemson
Clemson's Tigers pull another win, and they got it against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Overtime. (74-73; CLEMSON)

* Houston at Rice ---RIVALRY GAME---
Sad loss for Houston, perhaps disappointing as well. Crosstown rivals Houston and Rice went at it. This is the first of two games between these two. This game took place at Autry Court, on the campus of Rice University. The Owls picked up a big win over a good Houston Cougars team. Houston would smash Rice in football, but they weren't so lucky on the hardwood. Later this season- Houston/Rice 2 - at Hoffheinz Pavillion on the campus of the University of Houston. (71-62; RICE)

* Loyola University of Chicago at Wisconsin-Milwaukee
The Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers stopped Loyola Universty of Chicago's Ramblers from rambling on. (78-75; WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE)

* St. Joseph's at Massachusetts
The Saint Joseph's Hawks take defeat to the Massachusetts Minutemen. Sometimes, it's the minute things that matter most... (68-58; MASSACHUSETTS)

* UTEP at SMU
Two Texas schools that are acronyms are up. This isn't free advertising, but the protagonist team in "Glory Road" used to be known as Texas Western University. From 1966 to 2006, and they are not known as The University of Texas-El Paso. The Miners were anything but minor against the Southern Methodist Mustangs. As a little trivia, UTEP downed Kentucky back in 1966 to win the National Championship, proving once again that you don't have to be a glamourous university to win National Championship gold. UTEP may not be Top 25 material, but it's at least nice to know that a small school dug deep for gold and got it. (80-63; Texas-El Paso)

* Creighton at Northern Iowa
Creighton picks up a big win against the Nothern Iowa Panthers. (55-52; Creighton)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
The fairer sex is ready for basketball. For some of these teams, the men may have won or lost. With this list, only one team won on both the Men's and Women's side for this night. Find out who...

* Oklahoma State at Baylor
This was damned ugly. The Baylor Lady Bears are the defending National Champions as they OWNED the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. (57-26; BAYLOR)

* #19 Temple at George Washington
The George Washington Colonials won their game, but did the Lady Colonials win? You bet! They knocked off the #19 Temple Lady Owls. Today was a good day for George Washington. (58-41; GEORGE WASHINGTON)

* #2 Duke at Georgia Tech
The #2 Lady Blue Devils played like they were #1. And they were #1 against the Georgia Tech Lady Yellow Jackets. (67-59; Duke)

* Pittsburgh at St. John's
If the guys are struggling, the St. John's Lady Red Storm won over the Pittsburgh Lady Panthers. The Panther men are still undefeated as they get Big East newcomers DePaul on Thursday. But, sad loss for the Panther ladies. (-; )

* #10 Rutgers at South Florida
The unranked Men's Rutgers team lost, so let's see if the women give The State Univerity of New Jersey something to love. They did just that in a tight fit. How tight was this? One point. But it was enough for the Lady Scarlet Knights to love, and the Lady Bulls something to loathe. (66-65; Rutgers)

Next, the Pittsburgh men are unbeaten. Will that all change when they challenge when they play against DePaul? Find out next report!

THURSDAY'S GAMES

MEN'S DIVISION
Can Pittsburgh remain undefeated playing against Big East newcomers DePaul? We begin with this game.

* DePaul at Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is undefeated. Pittsburgh is good (except their college football team as of late). Pittsburgh has a nice challenger. The Pitt Panthers may not be lions, but playing at home against them is kind of like being fed to the lions. Instead, this is the Panthers' den. They've been tested a lot in this series. But as Duke and Florida at the only other unbeatens, Pitt's unbeaten streak is on the line against DePaul. Who is DePaul? Well, DePaul University is one of a few proud universities and colleges based in the city of Chicago, IL. That's right. The Windy City boys are going to meet the Steel City's boys. With skill, grace, and even a little luck, the Blue Demons could rip an upset. Time will tell as two teams from two big cities are ready to collide in a big matchup. DePaul led at the half, but Pittsburgh held on to remain unbeaten. Maybe if Duke and Florida lose their Saturday games, Pitt might go #1. (-; PITTSBURGH)

* Austin Peay at Murray State ---RIVALRY GAME---
We have a rivalry game between a Tennessee school (Austin Peay) and a Kentucky school (Murray State). These are two good Ohio Valley Conference schools who just do not like each other. The first is Austin Peay State University. I found out that you pronounce "Peay" as "peeh," and not "peeh-ay" as I normally do. But, the Governors get their rivalry on as this Tennessee university is ready to hit it off against their Kentucky rivals at Murray State. Being a motorsports fan, I can appreciate their choice of nickname because they are known as the Racers. Unlike motorsports, we're talking about a horse racing nickname. But, could Murray State get their motors running to down their old rivals? Those Racers beat down their rivals. (-; MURRAY STATE)

* Washington State at UCLA
UCLA's Bruins defeated the Washington State Cougars. They may have upset Washington, but the Washington State boys didn't take down UCLA. (63-61; CALIFORNIA-LOS ANGELES)

* Fairleigh Dickinson at Quinnipiac
No contest! Quinnipiac's Bobcats OWNED Fairleigh Dickinson's Knights. Great job by this Connecticut crew beating the boys from New Jersey. (102-81; QUINNIPIAC)

* Arizona at Oregon State
At one point, Arizona trailed 41-19. But this was more of a disappointing loss than an upset. Wildcat basketball is struggling this year, but any struggles by Arizona, the Beavers will definitely accept and cash in. Surely, Oregon State was money tonight. (-; OREGON STATE)

* Texas-Arlington at Texas State
Texas State's season is basically done. The Bobcats aren't going anywhere positive as the Texas-Arlington Mavericks may as well be the Dallas Mavericks to Texas State. (83-64; Texas-Arlington)

* Vermont at Hartford
Time for some catastrophe. It was a close fight, but the Vermont Catamounts proven valiant against Hartford's Hawks. (85-83; Vermont)

* Old Dominion at Georgia State
Two teams not found in football, but the Old Dominion Monarchs cleaned up the Georgia State Panthers. (77-62; Old Dominion)

* Fairfield at Niagara
Perhaps the MAAC's best team, the Niagara Purple Eagles had Fairfield's number. Because of this, the Stags lost by five. (78-73; NIAGARA)

* Loyola College at Canisius
Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference basketball continues as the Loyola College Greyhounds may not be mythical creatures, but they really made Canisius' Golden Griffins a thing of the past. (95-80; Loyola College)

* East Tennessee State at Kennesaw State
The Kennesaw State Owls did everything they had to in order to defeat the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in Overtime. Even with this win, I believe Kennesaw State cannot challenge for the Atlantic Sun championship until maybe next year. (78-72, OT; KENNESAW STATE)

* George Mason at William and Mary
Get ready for two straight blowouts by two Virginia-based home teams. First off, we're at The College of William and Mary. The Tribe met the George Mason Patriots. George Mason, not George Washington. Regardless, the Patriots still won and won VERY well. (65-46; George Mason)

* VCU at James Madison
Thought the previous game was a blowout? This game was worse. We got James Madison University butting heads against Virginia Commonwealth. Sadly, the Dukes are better in football than hoops because they lost BIG to the VCU Rams. (65-46; Virginia Commenwealth)

* Albany at Boston University
We're talking about Boston, but Boston University. Yes, there is a such place as Boston University, my Boston College fans. The Terriers, however, were introduced to Albany's Great Danes. This was anything but friendly. (53-47; Albany)

* High Point at Virginia Military
Want to meet High Point? Sure. The Panthers are ready for the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute. It's a triple-digit win for the kitties. (100-90; High Point)

* Sacred Heart at Mount St. Mary's
I believe both teams are 6-7 on the season as Mount St. Mary's College defeats the Sacred Heart Pioneers. (78-69; MOUNT ST. MARY'S)

* North Carolina-Wilmington at Drexel
The North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawks faced one of Philadelphia's finest, the Drexel Dragons. In Overtime the Dragons missed a winning oppurtunity to put away the North Carolina-Wilmington crew. (66-60, OT; North Carolina-Wilmington)

* Detroit at Clevland State
The Horizon League is up next as one of the best teams in conference meets a middle-of-the-road Horizon League team. It's still sad news for the Motor City because the Detroit Titans weren't titan enough to beat the Clevland State Vikings. Big win for Clevland State. (59-53, OT; CLEVLAND STATE)

* Lamar at Stephen F. Austin
Five points was the margin of victory. Only thing that mattered was that the Lamar Cardinals downed Stephen F. Austin's Lumberjacks. (70-65; Lamar)

* Washington at Southern California
The Huskies had smooth sailing against the USoCal Trojans. (86-77; Washington)

* Sacromento State at Idaho State
Finally, we end a game with an NBA-style score. Sacromento State wins this game against Idaho State. I don't think two teams can put up triple digits without Overtime of some sort. But surely enough, it happened without Overtime. I checked Yahoo's scores (the ones I normally use) and then the NCAA website's scores. Both said it was 107-106, so there you have it. (107-106; Sacromento State)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
* Georgia at Tennessee
This was a great SEC match, but the Lady Volunteers proved money against a good Georgia Lady Bulldogs unit. (95-84; TENNESSEE)

* Detroit at Butler
Detroit's men lose, but the Lady Titans cleaned up Detroit's night as they beat the Butler Lady Bulldogs on the road. (71-69; Detroit)

* UMBC at Vermont
Vermont's men were successful on the road. But the Lady Catamounts were housekeeping against UMBC. They did it quite well as the Maryland-Baltimore County Lady Retreivers fell hard. (74-60; VERMONT)

* Cincinatti at Connecticut
Connecticut's Lady Huskies decomposed the Cincinatti Lady Bearcats. (92-71; CONNECTICUT)

* Morris College at Coastal Carolina
We'll end with a blowout, as the Coastal Carolina Lady Chanticleers (they are roosters, if you don't know what they are) downed Morris College by a big margin. This was clearly major league ownage. (94-44; COASTAL CAROLINA)

FRIDAY'S GAMES
I haven't selected a lot of games for both the Men's and Women's sides, even though many different teams played. You want Friday basketball? Not many compelling matches, but that all changes when the rock get dribbled and shot this Satuday. So, enjoy these few games I've selected.

MEN'S GAMES
Let's begin with ESPNU games. We have three matches in New England. In fact, four teams (maybe five) we start with are New York-based teams, then one from New Jersey. Afterwards, we'll see who else played.

* Marist at Siena
We're talking about two eastern New York schools. In fact, they are somewhat of rivals. Marist and Siena represent two Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference schools. We begin with Marist College. Some of you MAY know them in football, but their basketball team did knock off a struggling St. John's. The Red Foxes likely aren't going to have an NCAA tournament appearance, but they can still prove to be deadly and even dangerous. The boys in green are Siena. The Siena College Saints are ready to light it up in and out the paint. MAAC basketball on tap, so let's see who won. (85-77; Marist)

* Columbia at Princeton
I'm sorry, only smart people can read this one. Why? We have Princeton here. Whereas they are among some of the toughest universities to get into, they are not completely academic on the court. The Princeton Tigers and ready to hoop it up. Earlier this year, they finished scoring only 21 points as they lost big to some other team (maybe an Ivy League team). Looking to put and keep New York City on the map from a team that ISN'T St. John's, it's Columbia. Princeton may have Tigers, but Lions are the real kings of the jungle. Let's see if that translates into buckets and free throws. (68-64, OT; PRINCETON)

* Rider at Manhattan
The Jaspers played in Manhattan and defended home court against the Rider Broncs. (87-80; MANHATTAN)

* Harvard at Dartmouth
Dartmouth's Big Green is probably better on the green fields than hardwood because they blown another game, this time to a real basketball color- the Harvard Crimson. This loss puts Dartmouth at 2-12. (63-55; Harvard)

* Cornell at Pennsylvania
This was a hellacious ass-kicking for the Penn Quakers as Cornell's Big Red got BIG OWNED. (83-43; PENNSYLVANIA)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
Here are a few games I've selected. Better than nonthing, right?

* St. Louis at Saint Joseph's
It's St. Louis at St. Joseph's to start the Women's scores. This game ended in a Lady Hawks blowout of the Saint Louis Lady Bilikens. (69-50; SAINT JOSPEH's)

* Houston at East Carolina
The Houston Lady Cougars continue defeating East Carolina, and this was a nice road win against the Lady Pirates of East Carolina. (-; Houston)

RAPID FIRE:
* Tulane at Central Florida (60-52; CENTRAL FLORIDA
* Richmond at Xavier (72-60; XAVIER)
* Fordham at Temple (61-47; TEMPLE)
* Pacific at Long Beach State (78-72; Pacific)

{B]SATURDAY'S GAMES[/B]

MEN'S DIVISION
I'd like to begin today's games listing by kind of showing some swagger. You see, I predicted two big upsets to happen, and they came true. Which games were they? The first two games I selected were upsets I predicted to happen... and happened. Afterwards, other upsets occured, so bring some asprin because these will be pounding headaches for fans who believe in the teams after these first two:

"Category 5" Miami at North Carolina
Let's begin at the Smith Center, home to more than 12,000 screaming Tar Heel fans. Those Tar Heels would be the kings of Tobacco Road- the University of North Carolina. Because no one really cares about UNC football, they meet a team who's a better football team than basketball team, Miami. Let me remind you that this is the ACC, so I'm obviously talking about Miami, FL. Anyhow, there may be nice weather in Chapel Hill, NC, but the Hurricanes were ready to rock Chapel Hill on the court. This game played very frantically, and these two took it to each other. Even the Miami coach, Frank Haith got really p*ssed off and taken off his jacket and thrown it down. The hope was that Miami would take down the North Carolina juggernauts. In almost amazing fashion, Miami held together to rip the upset. And my, was it ever... because it was the first time Miami has EVER beaten UNC at UNC. (81-70; Miami)

"Texas Teaser" Villanova at Texas
Oh, my upset predictions take me into Game #2. We got Villanova of the Big East, and Texas of the Big XII. If you still see some Longhorn fans celebrating their national championship in football and defending their baseball crown, you'll know that Texas is on the rise. The Burnt Orange and White of the Longhorns are ready to impale those long horns into some unsuspecting team. It was not a conference game, obviously. But this wasn't going to be like Syracuse vs. Dartmouth, Gonzaga vs. Weber State, or any other non-conference blowout game. They faced a whale of an opponent in Villanova. Whereas the Texas/Duke matchup was about as much of a game as the 2005 Peach Bowl, the Villanova Wildcats have a chance at staying #3, or moving down the board like firemen down a fire pole. This game was fierce. Even the Opening Tipoff was a fierce moment! Longhorns and Wildcats are just taking each other out. But in the end, Texas already won a lot of stuff in recent times, now they pick up another win in something- knocking off Villanova. (58-55; TEXAS)

"Tele-Tubby Smith" Alabama at Kentucky
Kentucky basketball is an American tradition. An American tradition of solid college basketball outside of all the ACC-philes and the Big East-philes. After all, good basketball isn't only in the ACC and Big East, it's also within the SEC. And we have the crimson-colored Alabama boys, and those meowing, purring, clawing, roaring blue-colored boys of Kentucky. Personally, I love cats over dogs. However, the Kentucky Wildcats sport blue and been FEELING blue as well. They lose to Kansas on the road, and then to Vanderbilt back at home. Kentucky is in a slump, almost as if they were in debt. They have a chance to break free as Alabama came to town. The Crimson Tide left Tuscaloosa, AL to Lexington, KY for one reason- make Kentucky lose THREE... STRAIGHT... GAMES. DId it happen? The boys in blue don't need any more heartbreak. Unfortunately, the woes continue. (68-64; Alabama)

"Super Mario Sunflower" Kansas State at Kansas ---RG: for the Governor's Cup---
GTPlanet, we're into Big XII country and two teams who completely hate each other. If you follow Big XII football, their rivalry should be very familiar to you. You also know that Kansas is the sorriest Big XII North football team. The Jayhawks may interest you in a little hardwood action. So let's see if Kansas State could pull it off. This is a first- I've covered three straight teams whose nickname is "Wildcats." So, the Kansas State Wildcats aren't truly favored as their Lawrence, KS counterparts in this one. Don't tell that to K State, because they pulled the upset on a Kasnas team that's a V8 with about six cylinders working. (59-55; Kansas State)

***** NOTE: Kansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina all lost at home in the same day for the first time ever. Three storied programs, and they all get downed.

* Providence at Notre Dame
We'll return to Big East play. The University of Notre Dame is based in South Bend, IN. There's a lot of Irish and even Catholic tradition. Football's done, so the Notre Dame Fighting Irish want to show their stuff in basketball. They'll need to do it against the men in black and silver- Providence College. There was a winning change for the Friars, but if they want it all, they'll have to beat two things- Notre Dame, and the Notre Dame's Sixth Man. Notre Dame knocked down a boatload of three-point shots. All Providence could do is watch as this game just ended up in a bigtime ass whoopin'. (92-77; NOTRE DAME)

* Holy Cross at Bucknell
This is the Patriot League, with institutions that represent the backbone of American pride. You may know these two in football, but how do they fair on the court? Holy Cross hopes their Crusaders can slay some wicked animals. Those animals happen to be the Bucknell Bison. Remember that the place is pronounced "Buck-Nell," and not "Buck-Nul." Can you pronounce "champion?" If you can, you'll know that the champs of this match were from . (-; )

* Central Florida at Houston
The women finished off UCF, so can the men do anything about it a day later? The Houston Cougars are showing lots of life even to lose about four games all season. UCF knows about showing life, especially their football team. It takes a lot of pride, determination, and courage to become a Golden Knight. UCF will prove their virtues as they played the boys from Houston, TX (my hometown). The Lady Coogs might have won against UCF's women's team, but the male Coogs failed against UCF's boys. Ouch. (66-56; Central Florida)

* Marquette at West Virginia
This was a no contest. West Virginia outclassed the Marquette Golden Eagles. Much like West Virginia's Mountaineers, Marquette did climb that elusive mountain in beating Connecticut. Sadly, Mount WVU was too much for Marquette. (105-84; WEST VIRGINIA)

* Auburn at #2 Florida
The Auburn Tigers got pounded by Florida's Gators as Florida remains in the Top 5. (69-57; FLORIDA)

* SMU at Memphis
The Memphis Tigers don't know how to lose. That makes it 15 wins for them, this time downing the sorry SMU Mustangs. (73-53; MEMPHIS)

* Oakland at UMKC
BlazinXtreme's boys are with Oakland University. It's Southeastern Michigan basketball, and Golden Grizzlies fans have been waiting for the tipoff to commence. When the zebra tossed it up, they looked at their opponents and hoped Oakland would make the famous. Another sad loss for the Oakland boys, and surprise surprise... decided by six points or fewer- again. Boy, Oakland can't catch any breaks, seems like. (93-91; MISSOURi-KANSAS CITY)

* Southern Utah at Centenary
Continuing with Mid-Continent play, we go to Shreveport, LA. You are virtually in Northwestern Louisiana. You are also into Centenary College. I don't know many Louisiana folk on GTPlanet except maybe GTP Moderator Kent, but the Centenary Gents are sick of losing and need a win someplace, somewhere. They've won two games and they invited Southern Utah for a little date. Southern Utah's Thunderbirds weren't going to play nice. The game, much like the one about this game, was close. But in the end, three cheers for Centenary- they get win #3 on the season. (67-65; CENTENARY)

* TCU at Air Force
Another no-contest is coming up. It was a "warm up the bus" game for Air Force. The Falcons soared high, whereas TCU's Horned Frogs were smashed like hell. (75-49; AIR FORCE)

* Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Wisconsin-Green Bay
This is an upset as the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix took down the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. (84-77; WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY)

* Peppderdine at Gonzaga ---RIVALRY GAME---
This is a rivalry of Malibu, CA(?)'s Pepperdine, and Spokane, WA's Gonzaga. For the Gonzaga boys, the Bulldogs rocked The Kennel as Pepperdine's Waves continue to slump. (102-73; GONZAGA)

* Duke at Clemson
The Clemson Tigers held together, but just couldn't down Duke. With this, the Blue Devils won by a handy margin of 10. (87-77; Duke)

* Iowa State at Texas Tech
The Red Raiders made history as Bob Knight gets his 100th win as coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With this, the Cyclones lose another one. (76-73; TEXAS TECH)

* Iowa at Penn State
From the Ames, IA crew to the Iowa City, IA boys. The Hawkeyes downed the Penn State Nittany Lions in this one. (80-76; Iowa)

* Oklahoma State at Baylor
The Baylor Bears got smashed by the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This would have been an upset if this were the women's teams clashing. (66-48; Oklahoma State

* #13 Washington at #12 UCLA
While the UCLA Bruins are good, the Washington Huskies were better. In terms of rankings, this is an upset. Washington's back where they need to be if they have a shot at making the NCAA tournament. (69-65; Washington)

* North Carolina-Wilmington at Hofstra
The North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawks have plenty of school pride, but it was Hofstra's Pride which reigned supreme. This was a triple-overtime barnburner. (92-87; HOFSTRA)

* Montreat College at Appalachian State
Thanks to the NCAA Website, I learned that Montreat College is home to the Montreat College Cavaliers as they lost in pure OWNAGE to Appalachian State's Mountaineers. (105-57; APPALACHIAN STATE)

* Florida International at Denver
The Denver Pioneers are signing happy songs as they destroyed the Florida International Golden Panthers. (80-55; DENVER)

* Calvin at Hope ---RIVALRY GAME---
GTPlanet, I'd like to end the Saturday scores with a special match. We got Hope College and Calvin College, two Division 3 schools whose game was televised on College Sports Television (CSTV). The Calvin Knlights are facing old-time rivals, the Hope Dutchmen. In the end, Hope blown out their bitter rivals, and this win makes them still unbeaten at home in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). (73-55; HOPE/Hope)

WOMEN'S SCORES
Allow me to pick a few ladies games.

* Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
In this Bedlam match, the Lady Sooners left their Stillwater rivals drowning in misery. Tough break for the OkSU Cowgirls. (81-51; Oklahoma)

* Notre Dame at Louisville
The Lady Cardinals of Louisville downed the Notre Dame Fighting Lady Irish. (61-51; LOUISVILLE)

* Oakland at Western Illinois
Neither Oakland's men or women could get a win today. For the Lady Golden Grizzlies, they seen their winning chances go up in smoke in overtime against Western Illinois' Lady Leathernecks. (74-65, OT; WESTERN ILLINOIS)

* Seton Hall at Rutgers
It's a nice win for the Rutgers Lady Scarlet Knights as they defeated the roadgoing Seton Hall Lady Pirates. (63-41; RUTGERS)

* Evansville at Missouri State
Love Overtime? You might like this match. The Evansville Lady Aces fell WAY short in 2OT against the Missouri State Bears. (67-59, 2OT; MISSOURI STATE)

* Air Force at TCU
Since the men couldn't do it on the road, leave it to the Lady Horned Frogs to blow out Air Force's Lady Falcons. (71-57; TEXAS CHRISTIAN)

* Holy Cross at Bucknell
The winner will be decided in Overtime. Let it be the Holy Cross Lady Crusaders to get it done over the Bucknell Lady Bison. (67-63, OT; Holy Cross)

* Belmont at Mercer
Finally, this was a close finish, and the closest margin I've selected. In the end, Georgia's Mercer Lady Bears won it all against the Belmont (nickname)s. (64-62; MERCER)

In talking about College Basketball, if you're a fan, go see "Glory Road" in theaters. I haven't seen it, but the story seems completely compelling. There were a lot of road wins today, not to mention quite a few upsets. Well, this is my final post of college hoops as a 22-year old, as I am now 23 years old. Happy birthday, right? Well, more action to come soon. I'll have the Sunday Sampler and maybe offer some views to you all. Until then, that is all for this week. Comment at will.

Can it get much worse? Looking at the schedule, yes.

I guess the gods of sports have chosen to punish me. My baseball team (Reds) sucks, my NFL team (Rams) sucks, and my UK Wildcats suck horribly at football and basketball is not living up to the Kentucky standard. How shall I gain redemption and salvage the NCAA season?
