TUESDAY'S GAMES
GTPlanet, the New Orleans Bowl may be on in college football, but who said only college football can be exciting? Get ready for some more holiday hoops!
MEN'S DIVISION
* North Carolina-Asheville at North Carolina-Wilmington
North Carolina is for college football. Isn't it a great feeling in late fall or early spring to see your favorite college teams in action? Well, North Carolina is in the house for this game, only that it isn't North Carolina or Duke (at least not yet). This is the Big South meeting the CAA. The North Carolina-Asheville Bulldogs are looking to take down a team that's done quite well so far. The North Carolina-Wilimington Seahawks are looking to submerge their Bulldog counterparts. NC-Wilmington has done quite well, but did they do well enough against North Carolina-Asheville? You bet! It's a runaway victory as the North Carolina-Asheville Bulldogs... well, fell to ashes.
(68-50; NORTH CAROLINA-WILMINGTON)
"Fly Like a Monarch Buttterfly, Sting Like a Bee" Old Dominion at Richmond
What state is north of North Carolina? Right. Virginia. What colleges and universities do you think of when it comes to Virgina? Maybe Marcus Vick and his Virginia Tech boys? Virginia upsetting Florida State in football? Maybe even watching William and Mary? Well, guess what. Neither of those bigtimers are in this game. The Old Dominion Monarchs aren't going to impress you with football on hardwood offense, but they will give you a run for your money. Let's hope they can do that against the Richmond Spiders. Do you freak out around spiders? Many of us get archnophobia personally, but Old Dominion hopes they don't fear arachnids. Unless of course, they got freaked out in some Halloween party months ago. Anyhow, back to the game... and what a game! Richmond got it done in OT.
(61-58; RICHMOND)
* Liberty at Mount St. Mary
Liberty continues to lose. The Flames were defeated by the mighty Mount of Mount St. Mary. Yes. The Mount is their nickname much like Slippery Rock call themselves the "Rock." (??-??; MOUNT ST. MARY)
* Colgate at Harvard
These are two college hockey powers, two decent college football teams, and are hardwood enemies, especially tonight. The Colgate Raiders won a share of the Patriot League title in football, and hope to extend some Patriot League cheer for the new season. Another team in red is Harvard. But they have a special red color which doubles as their nickname, and that's the Harvard Crimson.
* Florida International at La Salle
La Salle may actually have some competition in MAAC basketball. Only five teams comprise the MAAC football unit. They include La Salle, St. Peter's College, Wagner College, Duquesne, and . A few years ago, St. John's used to be in college football before they dropped their program. But La Salle's Explorers don't have to worry about losing to Division 2 and 3 teams in football because they have a chance in basketball. And they'll have to do it against the Florida International Golden Panthers from one of my favorite cities, Miami, FL. Who did the hurtin' and who took a hurtin'? I'll tell you who got her done.
(-; )
"Lancer Evolution MMV" Valparaiso at Longwood
I believe Longwood is in Virginia. They are one of the latest Division 1 newcomers along with Kennessaw State, New Jersey Instittute of Technology (New Jersey Tech?), North Florida, and even Northern Colorado. But can the Longwood Lancers rip a humungous upset over Valparaiso? The Valparaiso Crusaders hope and pray that doesn't happen. Longwood calls themselves the Lancers, and so they'll need to be every bit as dominating and as menacing as a Mitsubishi Lancer. They'll need to perform very well. Could the Lancers pull the trick?
* Louisiana Tech at Memphis
(-; )
* Middle Tennessee at Louisville
Poor Blue Raiders.... Louisvile's Cardinals cleaned house at Freedom Hall.
(76-68; LOUISVILLE)
"My Two Points" Maryland-Eastern Shore at Brown
The Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated Brown's Bears. I hate that song "It Takes Two, baby... it takes two baby..." but that was the spread- two points.
(59-57; Maryland Eastern Shore)
* Navy at Yale
America's team is your call- the Army, or the Navy. They may be big rivals Army and Navy are, but on the hardwood, it may be too close to call. America's basketball team must dominate, show committment to service to our great nation, and have to be able to take on all comers and get the best result possible, even in losing efforts. Well, the Navy Midshipmen just might be the better of the service academies (just like in football), but they are no Bucknell. Neither are the Yale Bulldogs. The Ivy Leaugers look to infect Navy with PLENTY of poison ivy and bite through the Midshipmen. It was a close loss for Navy. Yale's Bulldogs beat Navy by a long-range bomb. (73-70; YALE)
* Stetson at Florida State
Deland, FL is home to Stetson. Last year, Stetson finished 10-17 overall and 8-12 in their conference (Atlantic Sun). Will the sun shine again for these Floridians? The Hatters put on their thinking caps and thought about what it would take to rebound from the horrors of last season. They'll have a tough time doing it against Florida State. The Seminoles may not be the best Florida-based basketball team (Florida is best), but they still are quite as menacing as their football program... something Stetson doesn't have. Did the Noles' knock out the Hatters?
(-; )
* Northeastern at Providence
The Friars of Providence College get back to winning by knocking off the Northeastern Huskies. (92-70; PROVIDENCE)
* IPFW at Purdue
Independents battle the Big Ten. IPFW stands for Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne, Indiana has its IPFW Mastadons staying in the state of Indiana to square off against Purdue. The West Lafayette, IN bunch may not be the best team in Indiana (Indiana University), but the Boilermakers are killer on the boards and on the hardwood. Athlon Sports has Purdue as an NIT pick come March. But they can be an NCAA pick starting with this game. No sweat. (79-69; PURDUE)
* Army at Cornell
The Army Black Knights are ready to roll. But so are the Cornell Big Red, the pride of Ithaca, NY. In fact, both are New Yorkers. Army reps West Point. Cornell didn't have a very good outing against Cornell as the Big Red knocked off the Black Knights. (-; CORNELL)
* Drake at Iowa
Two Iowa schools meet in this matchup. And the Hawkeyes defeated Drake's Bulldogs... but not by too much.
(65-60; IOWA)
MEN'S RAPID FIRE
* Chattanooga vs. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (-; Chattanooga)
* Holy Cross vs. Clemson (-; )
* Houston at UNLV (83-73; NEVADA-LAS VEGAS)
* Notre Dame de Namur at Santa Clara (86-35; SANTA CLARA)
