It's a lovely week for college basketball. How so? During the course of this week, there is Valentine's Day. For some teams, it's love at first sight, and heartbreak for many others. Save the chocolates and diamond rings. Instead, get ready for... sweet touches and rings... the basketball rim that is!

LAST WEEK
* Lexington, KY is home to the Kentucky Wildcats, one of the best teams in America, much less the SEC. This year hasn't been very kind to the 'Cats, losing in a blowout to Florida the week before, then losing to Vanderbilt. I still have the wild kittens in the tournament, and wherever they go, they have a lot of work to do in becoming kings of the NCAA jungle. * If you think Kentucky is struggling, wait until you see two of the Big Ten's biggest powers. Illinois and Indiana are losing some close games (Illinois played today, so check the Sunday Sampler), and they are usually the two biggest teams in the Big Ten. Perhaps Illinois faced their most disappointing loss when they welcomed Penn State. When it looked like Illinois was going to avoid being upset, a review showed that the shooter still had the ball in his hands when the clock ticked down to 0.00. In the end, Penn State did what they could easily do in football- beat Illinois' Fighting Illini. As for Indiana, the Hoosiers took an upset loss to the red hot Iowa Hawkeyes. Illinois and Indiana are losing their hold on being Big Ten powers. * Love the Texas Longhorns? I bet I can make you love them in basketball too. Texas is ruling the Big XII in Men's Basketball. There may be a chance that the Burnt Orange can get her done come March. If you're a true fan of Texas, feel free to give your Longhorns a little love. * Georgetown and George Washington are two of the hottest schools right now. The respective Hoyas and Colonials are doing very well in their respective conferences. Both teams can become bigtime tournament threats. I'm sure it's a treat for Washington, D.C. to have two of their own Division 1 schools playing at their very best against America's finest talent. * Gonzaga University may not be Connecticut, Arizona, or Kentucky in terms of storied programs, but they took down Stanford on Saturday night and are very likely to be a tour de force when March Madness kicks off. * Around my way, the University of Houston is doing very well, taking down Southern Methodist by about 10 points. Houston will hope to return to the Big Dance long since "Turnaround" Tom Penders had that disgraceful Technical Foul called against him as he fainted on the sidelines. Houston's biggest game will be against Memphis on March 4th. * Missouri's head coach Quin Snyder called it quits as his Tigers continue to struggle in the Big XII. They are perhaps the football equivalent of Kansas State- done very well, but all of a sudden falling apart. I forget the name of the new head coach. * West Virgina's Kevin Pittsnoggle scored a grand total of 0 points. When he doesn't score, the Mountaineers lost four of their last five, counting this game at Pittsburgh.

GTPlanet, let's start the week with the Sunday Sampler. If you're ready, then get ready for a quick look at Sunday's action.

SUNDAY SAMPLER
---MEN---
* #9 Indiana at #17 Ohio State (69-53; OHIO STATE) *upset!*
* Cincinatti at #14 Pittsburgh (89-69; PITTSBURGH)
* Kansas State at Missouri (74-71; MISSOURI)
+++++JOHN'S NOTE: Missouri needs wins to stay sharp, and this is a step in the right direction.

---WOMEN---
* Colgate at American (72-63; Colgate)
* Delaware at Hofstra (91-85, OT; HOFSTRA)
* UAB at East Carolina (96-94, 3OT; Alabama-Birmingham)

Enjoyed it? You'll likely enjoy my usual Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday scores too.

GTPlanet, Monday scores are unavailable, but here's a big game I'd like to include:

MONDAY'S GAMES
-many scores unavailable at this point-

MEN'S DIVISION
* #1 Connecticut at #4 Villanova
(69-64; VILLANOVA) *upset!*

-many scores unavailable at this point-

WOMEN'S DIVISION
-many scores unavailable at this point-

This post will likely be updated with more scores, or just leave this as is. In the meanwhile, check out my latest thread called "If They Played Today..." { https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=76925 } and offer your comments to the topic at hand. Meanwhile, I'll have Tuesday for you when I get a chance.

TUESDAY'S GAMES
Happy Valentine's Day, GTPlanet! As festive as that may sound, it wouldn't be such a happy day (much less Valentine's Day) for many teams. Instead of roses and cards, some teams got heartbreak and Kleenex tissues. And I'm not talking about stopping runny noses, but for crying their eyes out. There is no crying in basketball, but emotion really spills over even the best of teams. Look at last night when Villanova downed Connecticut. A #1 went down as #4 got Philadelphia off their asses and cheering at the top of their lungs. For the games at hand, I'll cover the scores in red. Or, we can call it Valentine Red. If you're going to highlight something, it would have to be in another color- just to avoid confusion.

MEN'S DIVISION
For the men, I'll begin with two non-major conferences. I want to begin with a highly underrated conference, then move to a slightly less underrated conference. You'll be happy with my decision making, will you? Alright boys and girls, let's see these guys hoop it up!

* Creighton at Wichita State
These are two good teams. Maybe not as glamourous as the ACC or Big East, but surely the Wichita State Shockers shocked me as they beat the awesome Creighton Blue Jays in Overtime. The finish was exciting, though I didn't see all of this game on ESPNU. (62-61, OT; WICHITA STATE)

* Saint Joseph's at Temple
A few years ago, Saint Joseph's ran the table in the Atlantic 10 and did considerably well in the postseason. That luster of the past was lost as the Saint Joseph's Hawks went to 10-12 overall, losing to Temple's Owls. Now if only Temple's football team can be as good as their basketball... (57-44; TEMPLE)

* #11 West Virginia at Seton Hall
This was a Valentine's Day that the West Virginia Mountaineers would love to forget. The Seton Hall Pirates were thinking this game was going to be about climbing Mount Everest, but they conquered Mount WVU in South Orange, NJ. (71-64; SETON HALL)

* Wake Forest at Duke
J.J. Redick was going to make history for Duke by scoring the most 3-pointers in Duke history, maybe even NCAA history. There was also history made- the Blue Devils making the Wake Forest Demon Deacons history. (93-70; DUKE)

* Baylor at #6 Texas
They could beat them in football, and the Longhorns can deliver on grass too. Not a bad win for Texas, but the Baylor Bears were treated like teddy bears. I'm sure if you gave your lady Valentine one, that was what Baylor was like to Texas. (90-63; TEXAS)

* North Florida at Florida International
Miami loves this effort as Florida International's Golden Panthers defeat the Owls of Jacksonville's(?) North Florida. (71-57; FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL)

* #16 Michigan State at #20 Iowa
Ranking-wise, Iowa pulls the upset as the Hawkeyes are rolling in the Big Ten. As for Michigan State, they fall to 18-7, which isn't very much like Spartans' basketball. (66-54; IOWA)

* St. Peter's at Fairfield
Eat your heart out, NBA! We got high-scoring basketball. For these guys to play two 20-minute halves and have this much shooting is unreal. In the end, all we have is MAAC basketball. Happy Valentine's from me to you, Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Fairfield Stags are ready to make St. Peter's into fresh poultry. Likewise, the Peacocks look to make the Stags into Stagg Chili (a brand of chili, maybe here in Texas). Afterwards, dig in! We got fresh poultry, fresh from St. Peter's College. High-scoring battle here. (109-108; FAIRFIELD)

* Southern Mississippi at #3 Memphis
Southern Mississippi takes a pounding as the Golden Eagles were given a hellacious pounding as the Memphis Tigers were all full of heart and determination. (80-41; MEMPHIS)

* Boston University at Binghamton
Happy Valentine's, America East! Binghamton has a Happy Valentine's Day as the Wildcats gave the Boston University Terriers some "Be Mine" hearts. In basketball speak, it really means "Be My Guest In Accepting This Blowout!" I apologize. Correct spelling is "Binghamton," not "Binghampton." (74-51; BINGHAMTON)

* Maryland at Clemson
This is somewhat of an upset as the Clemson Tigers picked up a stellar win. These Tigers didn't fear Maryland's Terrapins. Then again, they didn't hve to. (89-77; CLEMSON)

* Princeton at Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania picks up their 15th win of the season as the Quakers shook the foundation of the Princeton Tigers. (60-41; PENNSYLVANIA)

WOMEN'S DIVISION - VALENTINE SPECIAL
GTPlanet, I'm talking about the ladies and how they hoop it up. I'll try to put on more Women's games for this one, just to give the ladies a little Valentine's Day love from yours truly, John. I want to bring Men and Women to my reports. I want you all to enjoy as much college basketball as you can. I may not be passionately into college basketball as I am with college football, but let's do a little women's hoops, shall we? Give a girl flowers and a card, and she'll love you. No, really. You don't have to give a girl like... diamond earrings or something. The ladies don't like being heartbroken about as much as us guys. So while you guys were probably getting mushy with your girlfriend (or imaginary girfriend), the ladies were hitting the courts with the same intensity as the guys. Never underestimate the power of a woman, especially on the court. Want some reasons why? Check out these scores:

* Villanova at #1? Rutgers
Villanova's flirting with a chance to upset Rutgers. This Big East battle features two teams who can tear up the boards and play hard. Of course, Villanova's on top of the world right now as the boys defeated #1 Connecticut. Let's see if the Villanova Lady Wildcats can meow and purr their way to victory. Yeah, more than just flirt with the possibility of an upset, but to let Rutgers have it... all guns ablaze. Those were the ladies in blue, now we meet the ladies sporting red. A special color too- scarlet. Red normally suggests love, so that's why you see red boxes of chocolates given to deserving ladies from handsome men. Scarlet is a variation of red which also suggests great basketball. That's what you can expect when you have the Rutgers Lady Scarlet Knights in the house. They are ready to defend the righteous honor of The State University of New Jersey, Rutgers University. The divas in scarlet found of the love of their lives- a lovely win against Villanova. And they lived happily ever after riding into the sunset. Actually, it was probably night already, but I was just trying to sound cool, okay? (62-56; RUTGERS)

* Navy at Holy Cross
Let's spread the love... or hate... as we take a look at the Patriot League. We must remember to be patriotic on this day. Being a proud American never takes a holiday, especially if you're proud to be American. In addition, we have some basketball by some patriotic divas. For one, Navy is drowning in love with the chance of sinking the Holy Cross battleship. The Midshipwomen would love another win to add to their tally. To do it, they must match up against the girls in violet- The College of the Holy Cross. How come violets don't make good flowers to give to a girl? Forget about diamonds, girl's best friend is a basketball and the gifts of beauty and talent. Those can't be bought from the store. Be careful around Holy Cross, becaues the Lady Crusaders don't take crap from anyone. Blue vs. violet (I'd say purple, but we're talking about ladies). Cross my heart? Holy Cross had plenty of heart in breaking the hearts of Navy. Aww... (65-47; HOLY CROSS)

* Texas Tech at Iowa State
And now, we got big love for Texas Tech, Iowa State, and Big XII Women's basketball. Texas Tech University can be found inf Lubbock, TX. Lubbock can be found in north northwestern Texas. When it's already cold in Texas, it has to be ridiculously cold there. I got just the thing to keep your heart warm- Lady Red Raider basketball. Texas Tech is ready to head out of Texas and break Iowa State's hearts. Iowa State University isn't too far from Iowa's Big TEN team. While the Iowa City folk can't stand Iowa State, same could be said in terms of Iowa State against Iowa. The Lady Cyclones face a good team, but not Iowa. Instead, those girls have to match up against Texas Tech. It's Big XII basketball with one heart ready to be broken. But whose? Texas Tech's Red Raiders had lots of heartbreak. (69-65; IOWA STATE)

* Winthrop at North Carolina-Asheville
Now we go to two schools without football programs. So if you're new to college basketball and follow the gridiron, we have two teams who sponsor college hoops. I believe we're talking about the Big South, no? As we take a look at the Big South, you may notice a bunch of feathers on the ground. That is because Winthrop had to fly away from Winthrop to go to North Carolina-Asheville. Since girls are all obsessed with the cute little angel theme, it's not bad to see some Lady Eagles migrate to where it's cold. ??? Birds migrate... to cold... anyhow, moving on. Many people love puppies. And they say "if you want cute, buy a puppy!" I'd prefer a cuddly kitten, but North Carolina-Asheville consist of five puppies playing five-on-five against any team. Much like Georgia (their football team), there are bulldogs in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. It won't be a vacation getaway if you lose on the road. So let's get this match started and light up some love. The match went to those ladies from Asheville, NC. Great job, Lady Bulldogs! (49-47; NORTH CAROLINA-ASHEVILLE)

* Seton Hall at Pittsburgh
Evil ladies and cuddly kittens are next. As the boys were housekeeping against West Virginia, the ladies had to go elsewhere. Seton Hall University is in South Orange, NJ. Despite the name, Seton Hall's colors are blue. These ladies may wear blue, but believe me, their hearts are red hot, especially considering how the Lady Pirates have a chance to go on the road and get some damage done. Now on to some cuddly kittens in America's Steel City. Pittsburgh also sports blue colors, but they have red-hot hearts and nerves of steel. You would understand this perfectly if you play for Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh has a good men's team, but there are also some Lady Panthers who love to play basketball. They'll give it their all and not stop until they get the job done. With their hearts in the right places, they found victory, and it was as sweet-smelling as roses. Pittsburgh's ladies were very pleased with their results. While Cupid shot his arrows, Pittsburgh was shooting marvellously in their win at home. Way to go! (58-56; PITTSBURGH)

* Davidson at Elon
Let's talk about some tough love between two SOCON (Southern Conference) teams. Davidson College are all about basketball, and surely they came into Elon in the Lady Wildcats' efforts to play the role of heartbreakers. Elon's Lady Phoenix of Elon, NC (I believe) are looking to have a happy Valentine's night in making Davidson warm up the bus. Unfortunately, many hearts were broken at Elon as Davidson (60-47; Davidson)

* Longwood at Virginia
Finally, some heartbreak. Yes, no one loves accepting heartbreak. Unlike Vanessa Williams, I've saved the worst [beating] for last. Longwood University was one of the newcomers to Division 1 hoops. Unfortunately, the Lady Lancers were looking to go into Virginia to ruin the Valentine cheer of the Charlottesville, VA girls and boys. Virginia's hearts refused to be broken. The Lady Cavaliers were ready for anything, even an unproven basketball unit like Longwood. Longwood came in looking for a little love, but Cupid's arrows missed the mark for Longwood. In the end, it's Valentine's Day ownage in Virginia. I'm sure Longwood's ladies camped out at Heartbreak Hotel and went home not getting any love. (93-42; VIRGINIA)

ESPN2 talked about the five most heartbreaking finishes in college hoops this season. Here were the finishes:
5 - Illinois vs. ???
4 - Connecticut vs. Gonzaga - Maui Invitational
3 - Penn State at Illinois
2 - Oklahoma State vs. Gonzaga - Key Arena
1 - Virginia Tech at Duke

Hope all of you had a Happy Valentine's Day. More scores to come!

WEDNESDAY'S GAMES
Valentine's Day scores were mostly based on scores with Valentine themes to them, like hearts, love, that sort of thing. Well, back to business now. It's the "Hump Day" of the week, so like the Black-Eyed Peas would say, let's get it started in here! Let's get stupid, man.

MEN'S DIVISION
Of course, it's time for me to pick some games for you all to see scores for. I don't follow a specific order, so I'm not like glamourous teams first, everybody else second. You know, I'm going to start this batch of scores with my hometown. That's Houston, of course. This is about two Conference USA Houston, TX rivals in two different part of America. First the lackluster Rice, then the team trying to make the NCAA tournament- Houston. We begin at my hometown and move elsewhere.

* ECU at Rice
GTPlanet, welcome to Houston. It is a big city with many different amenities for cultural diversity, nice parks, cool sports venues (I've personally been to Reliant Stadium and the Toyota Center), and a lot more. But did you know that it's home to the world's biggest medical sector? If you find a map of Houston, try finding the collosal Texas Medical Center, a medical sector with many different hospitals. You're looking at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, and even Hermann Hospital. In the shadow of the Texas Medical Center is the Rice University, a private university around a rich part of town, Rice Village. In fact, I thought about enrolling at Rice at one point, because it's in a beautiful setting. Rice is home to many bird lovers. Not known for flying prowess, Rice's Owls can surely take to the sky whether it's football (which they suck at) or basketball (which they may have a chance). Looking to scoop up some booty are East Carolina. Pirates love looting and plundering, and taking the heart of the Owls would be pure bliss. (62-55; RICE)

* Houston at UCF
Now that you've seen probably the second-best Houston school, now meet the best of the three Division 1 schools- the University of Houston. My brother is an alum of UH. Okay, so the University of Houston isn't as glamourous as Duke, Stanford, Princeton, Michigan, or even Texas, but it is a good school with some nice moments in sports. Some good, some not so good. Not so good was when Houston was #1 in the nation in basketball as they had their eyes on the National Title... until North Carolina State dashed their dreams. In football, the classic Cotton Bowl game between Houston and Notre Dame was a Notre Dame blowout until Notre Dame broke Houston's hearts. And who was the ND QB? Joe Montana. For Houston, they are the travelling team who hopse not to travel on the basketball court and have the ball in UCF's hands. If Houston is to make the NCAA tournament, the Cougars have a lot going for them by beating two tough teams- Arizona and LSU. If you're in C-USA and not named Memphis, that's pretty damn good, even considering that Houston trailed LSU by as much as 21, all to come back and win. Now, to UCF- the University of Central Florida. I didn't know UCF had a stint in the MAC in football, and then some Atlantic Sun competition in basketball. Now, the Golden Knights of Orlando, FL want to intercept Houston's NCAA aspirations. Houston has about five games left, even with their season finale at Memphis in two weeks. Let's see who got it done. It was 37-29 at the half for the Cougars. Afterwards, in a game I didn't think they'd win, they won against UCF in a nice fashion. (78-71; Houston)

* Georgia at Kentucky
Hmm... this will give the Kentucky Wildcats a chance to stop the bleeding they've taken in playing college hoops. Georgia is a pure football school, much like Michigan is. You'd have to imagine that even though Georgia's been playing better as of late, their Men's team still stinks. That stink isn't from Bulldog droppings, but because they simply aren't the class of the SEC in men's basketball. With football returning in August, only thing Georgia can do is make the most out of every remaining game. Sadly... this is all about Lexington. If Georgia had one small advantage in this game, it would probably be that Kentucky fans are just really sick of seeing the Kentucky kitties lose. That is why at every home game, the Wildcat faithful cheer on their teams like a heated English Premier League match. Or maybe Futbol la Liga Mexicana. Or maybe... you get the idea. Anyhow, Tubby Smith is coaching his boys not to win, but to WIN. Kentucky may be flirting with the NIT, but you can bet that Kentucky's not going down without a fight. Forget about the bark being as bad as its bite, this is about the cat's meow. That's something the Morris/Rondo tandem can cash in on. At the half, Kentucky lead by 3 with a 28-25 tally. Put on twenty more minutes, and is there a doctor in the house? Rupp Arena had the charisma back into the crowds as they've seen Kentucky struggle for some of their recent games, but now have reason to cheer again. Kentucky didn't win in a warm up the bus result, but this was good enough for the Wildcats. They'll take any win they can fight for. Surely, they want this win. Tubby Smith should be proud of his boys, but should also give himself a pat on the back for a job well done. Allow me to paraphrase from an old Ford slogan about Kentucky... if you haven't looked at Kentucky lately, look again. The Wildcats can proudly roar again. And if you're not intimidated by their roar, you will be when you have to play the 'Cats. Sure, it's just Georgia, but any win is a feel good win. (68-61; KENTUCKY)

* Georgia Tech at #23 North Carolina
Kentucky blue was in the last game, now we're talking North Carolina blue. Blue is the dominant color, but this time, it's Tar Heel blue getting it done against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. (82-75; NORTH CAROLINA)

* American at Army
Both teams have losing records, but the American Eagles did more basketball than sucking, which is something Army's Black Knights did on this night. (68-55; American)

* #24 Bucknell at Lafayette
The Bucknell Bison remain unbeaten as they hushed up the Lafayette Leopards. (69-49; Bucknell)

* Cincinatti at Syracuse
It isn't common to see Syracuse get their asses handed to. It's commonplace in football, but is disappointing to see the Syracuse Orange lose in a blowout to the Cincinatti Bearcats. Cincinatti is good, but not THAT good to where Syracuse is like... "go ahead and own us." They (82-65; Cincinatti)

* Indiana at Penn State
After Indiana's coach came back from a horrible flu (imagine not being able to stand up having the flu. That is VERY serious), it's time to do basketball. The Hoosiers need a blessing because this is a sad loss. Credit the Nittany Lions of Penn State, though. They beat Illinois AND Indiana in the same season. (71-68; PENNSYLVANIA STATE)

* Stetson at Savannah State
Let me answer the obvious question. Why am I covering Division 1's worst team of all time? It's because I want to give Savannah State fans (all 6 of you) a little love. Or in this case, a little hate. Savannah State has played 26 games, counting this one about to be played. Out of those games, they have won two so far heading into this one. The Savannah State Tigers are worse than Morgan State and Coppin State. At least those two teams are playing better now than when their asses were getting owned by all of America. This is even considering that Savannah State lost to a team that wasn't even in Division 1, maybe not even the NCAA... which is sad. Hell, what if Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, PR-Cayey, PR-Rio Pierdas, or even PR-Bayamon came to Savannah State looking to beat a Division 1 team? There's some good news to this. The Tigers are playing Stetson. Stetson is a horrible Florida basketball team. The Hatters of DeLand(?), FL met up against the multi-time ESPN Bottom 10 frontrunners- Savannah State. Can Savannah State win #3? This is sad by Savannah State. I know they are Independents, but it doesn't matter. What if they played in the Big South or the SOCON? Hell, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is an Independent, and even they can win. It takes talent, skill, and commitment to win no matter what conference you're in. You don't have that? You don't win. Stetson picks up a nice win as the Florida brand gets it done. (62-53; Stetson)

* #?? Pittsburgh at Providence
Let's stay in New England, alright? You may know about Pittsburgh. They had that horrible Big East football season after making a BCS bowl a season ago in losing in a blowout to Utah). Their basketball is on point. The once unbeaten Pittsburgh Panthers may not be unbeaten anymore, but they aren't afraid to beat down some other teams. Even if that team is one of the Big East bottom dwellers, like Providence. If you follow college hockey, Providence College has a pretty good team. Since Providence doesn't have a football team, we move to basketball. You can imagine that the Friars just want to make the most of every game down the stretch. The boys in black and silver meet the navy blue crew. And at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, Providence got dunked by 8 to the kitties. (85-77; Pittsburgh)

* St. John's at Rutgers
St. John's has a chance to end their six-game skid. A dumb ass Five-Second Violation by St. John's gave the Rutgers boys some life. After a nice look from three-point land, Rutgers shot... but missed. After two good free throws by the Red Storm and solid full-court defense, St. John's get a BIG win. This would be a big win even if this was Women's hoops, and both Women's teams are great. (54-51; St. John's)

* Detroit at Youngstown State
Let's face it. Youngstown State is more of a football team than a basketball unit. The Penguins stink in the Horizon League. The Penguins didn't get a chance to beg not to be beaten. Unfortunately, the Detroit Titans didn't care. It's a nice win for an improving team. (65-54; Detroit)

---RAPID FIRE---
* #7 Florida at Vanderbilt (73-68; Florida)
* Massachusetts at George Washington (69-66; GEORGE WASHINGTON)
* Mississippi State at #25 LSU (72-59; LOUISIANA STATE)
* Illinois-Chicago at Wisconsin-Milwaukee (WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE)
* Cleveland State at Wright State (63-56; Cleveland State)
* #19 Oklahoma at Colorado (84-75; COLORADO) *upset!*
+++++JOHN'S NOTE: This loss makes Oklahoma overrated in a sense. They are good, but not THAT good.

* Maine at Vermont (79-48; VERMONT)
* Sam Houston State at Lamar (85-82; Sam Houston State)
* Virginia Commonwealth at Towson (59-57; TOWSON)
* Auburn at #10 Tennessee (105-89; TENNESSEE)
* Northern Colorado at Denver (85-80; DENVER)
+++++JOHN'S NOTE: Denver needs wins. They are great, but have struggled.

WOMEN'S DIVISION
Savannah State is horrible, but can the women be better tonight? We start with Savannah State.

* The College of Charleston at Savannah State (75-53; The College of Charleston)
* Providence at Connecticut (84-58; CONNECTICUT)
* Hartford at UMBC (56-49; Hartford)
* New Hampshire at Stony Brook (62-56; STONY BROOK)
* Vermont at Maine (68-65; Vermont)

Thursday's scores are forthcoming.

THURSDAY'S GAMES

MEN'S DIVISION
I'll begin with an upset and go with RAPID FIRE the rest of the way.

"The Big Mar-queezy 4 Sheezy" Georgetown at Marquette
The Marquette Golden Eagles are having a GREAT year in their Big East debut, and they were golden as they extinguished the red hot Georgetown Hoyas. (-57-51; MARQUETTE) *upset!*

* Miami at Boston College (65-54; BOSTON COLLEGE)
* #25 Washington at Oregon (75-72, Washington)
* Arizona at Stanford (82-69; STANFORD)
* (70-64; VALPARAISO)
* FDU at Sacred Heart (85-76; Fairleigh Dickinson)
* Lipscomb at (82-70; Lipscomb)
* Northern Arizona at Montana State (??-??; Northern Arizona)
* Morehead State at Samford (??-??; SAMFORD)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
* #?? LSU at Florida (79-78, OT; FLORIDA) *upset!*
* #11 Stanford at #15 Arizona State (62-59; ARIZONA STATE) *upset!*

* #24 Louisiana Tech at San Jose State (78-48; Louisiana Tech)
* Boston College at Maryland (MARYLAND)
* #5 Tennessee at #13 Georgia (58-55; Tennessee)
* Michigan at #10 Purdue (75-50; PURDUE)

Of course, Friday scores will only be a few scores as we get ready for another wild Saturday, including Bracketbuster games.

SATURDAY'S GAMES
GTPlanet, it's time to start thinking tournament because March is only two weeks away. Good matches are coming your way, and only good teams will advance. The focus on Bracketbusters will highlight the front end of this game report.

MEN'S DIVISION
GTPlanet, we begin with official Bracketbuster games. Now from yesterday, Nevada and Virginia Commonwealth won their games. Now, let's do the Saturday Bracketbusters.

BRACKETBUSTER SPECIAL - JUST SCORES
All of the following games are chances for teams to fill in spot #65 to compete in The Big Dance. The teams who will come close will be your winners. Some of Saturday's bracketbuster games are as follows:

^ #24 Bucknell at Northern Iowa (65-61, 2OT; NORTHERN IOWA) *upset!*
^ Butler at Kent State (80-76, OT; KENT STATE)
^ Fresno State at Creighton (67-62; CREIGHTON)
^ Missouri State at Wisconsin-Milwaukee (72-63, OT; Missouri State)
+++++JOHN'S NOTE: I think this is an upset because Wisconsin-Milwaukee is probably the best team in the Horizon League.

^ Northern Arizona at Western Kentucky (78-59; WESTERN KENTUCKY)
^ Louisiana Tech at Southern Illinois (55-51; Louisiana Tech)
^ George Mason at Wichita State (70-67; George Mason)
* Samford at Ohio (64-52; OHIO)
* Northwestern State at Utah State (66-63; UTAH STATE)
^ Buffalo at Iona (93-75; IONA)

Now for the rest of today's games.

"Worse Than Advertised" Louisville at Syracuse
Let's check in to the state of New York. Is anything bigger than the Big East (in basketball)? Well, the ACC is solid too, but you're supposed to say "yes, John. The Big East is the best." If the Big East is the best, we have two teams with pretty bad seasons. At one point, Louisville used to be undefeated... until they played at Rupp Arena against Kentucky (they'll be featured later, so stay tuned!). Even with a decisive win against Notre Dame (they will be featured later as well), the Louisville Cardinals still have work to do to make it into the Big Dance, or at least the NIT. Traditionally, Syracuse basketball is usually better than Syracuse football about 75% of the time. Orange basketball is sort of been crushed. They hope not to be turned into freshly CRUSHED orange when they welcome Louisville. And thanks to the khights who call the Carrier Dome their castle, the Orange were spared of danger. As for Louisville, they may end up in nobody's tournament. (79-66; SYRACUSE)

* Iowa State at #19 Oklahoma
Nothing's bigger than the Big XII, so let's get to a big game here. The Sooners of Oklahoma and Cyclones of Iowa State put on a good game, a great game, and a close game. Thankfully, Oklahoma survived the deadly Cyclones to win and maintain their #19 rank. They may go higher if some of the higher ranked teams fell (find out later as one Top Ten upset happened). (83-82; OKLAHOMA)

* Mississippi at Mississippi State ---RIVALRY GAME---
Their football teams need help, and their basketball teams would love to be in The Big Dance. And oh yeah, they hate each other. This is the Egg Bowl of college hoops. Mississippi usually can beat Mississippi State in football because the Rebels know what to do to win. And for the same reasons, that's why the MSU Bulldogs beat Ole Miss... bad. (84-55; MISSISSIPPI STATE)

* Charlotte at Fordham
Welcome to one of my favorite cities in the world- New York City. It's the first time ESPN televised a basketball game from Fordham University. As I have heard, Fordham's basketball court is the oldest arena in Division 1 basketball. Until Rose Hill Gym was built in 1925, and renovated in 2002. It used to be a World War II barrack. The first game at the arena was Boston College at Fordham (Fordham won). And if you ask me, I like Fordham's arena. I like arenas usually with big windows and such. You're more concentrated on basketball of course, but at least it's nice to have some windows around, just to add a little aura and provide some light to otherwise window-less arenas. For a place like New York City, who wouldn't want to see this lovely city? Probably Charlotte. I'm sure the 49ers probably enjoyed themselves in town, but they want to give Fordham a sad loss. I believe Fordham University is a religious-type university much like Xavier, Creighton, Sacred Heart, or anything like that. The Rams are looking to get a BIG win against Charlotte. Did they did it? Or will they be denied? One exciting thing about this game is that the first five minutes of the game were nothing but three-point bombs by both teams. Two-pointers weren't available because some NBA-style three-point shooting was mainplace for the first five minutes of the game. Afterwards, the game was an indication as to how good Charlotte is as Fordham failed to land the upset. (81-75; Charlotte)

* Georgia Tech at Maryland
A wild Overtime finish helped secure a big win for the Maryland Terrapins, not to mention keeping their tournament hopes alive. Georgia Tech is pretty much done for and headed to the NIT at best. The Yellow Jackets might not make it to the NCAA tournament at this point. (87-74, OT; MARYLAND)

* Pittsburgh at Marquette
"(to whom this may concern), we are the Marquette Golden Eagles. Maybe we're not UConn or anybody, but we are deserving of an NCAA bid. We'd love to be part of March Madness because we welcomed #9 Pittsburgh to our wonderful Milwaukee-based university. We knocked off #1 UConn, we knocked off plenty of other teams... and if you think we're overrated, look what we did to the Pittsburgh Panthers! Let us into The Big Dance, please? Sincerely, Marquette University Golden Eagles." (84-82; MARQUETTE) *upset!*

* Dayton at La Salle
The Atlantic 10 sees two teams that can be also found in football. The Dayton Flyers wanted to fly high, but La Salle's Explorers found many ways to stop them... and they all worked. Brian Gregory's boys have to be really upset with how this season is going. (74-71; LA SALLE)

* Michigan at #?? Michigan State ---RIVALRY GAME---
Okay, let's get this straight. If you're from Ann Arbor, East Lansing HATES you. If you're from East Lansing, Ann Arbor HATES you. And guess what. Both schools hate each other. They can't seem to get along for some reason. Michigan rules the gridiron, but Wolverines can play basketball too. Michigan State isn't too good in football, but their basketball team is good. In fact, they are so good that they won something... the 2000 National Championship. The Spartans would love to win the 2006 title. But they need to stop their rivals to have a chance. No sweat. Blowout game. (90-71; MICHIGAN STATE)

* #18 Iowa at Minnesota
Iowa was hot, hot, hot... even while it can be cold in Iowa City with these nor'easters and all. It didn't stop the fact that the Hawkeyes were the Big Ten's hottest team. Much like a hot fashion trend, everyone wants to cash in on one's success. Iowa was the new Illinois... but that all changed because Minnesota had other plans. Iowa and Minnesota is a good football matchup, but Golden Gophers aren't exactly used to domination(74-61; MINNESOTA)

* Oral Roberts at Montana
Let's go non-conference for a moment. Oral Roberts is the best team in the Mid-Continent. They are made of 24K gold. So that's why if you see golden feathers, at least know they come from the Golden Eagles of ORU. If you see a beast from the northwestern quadrant of America, you know that Montana's Grizzlies are in town. Those Grizzlies feasted on Montana-fried Golden Eagles. Yummy! (88-74; MONTANA)

* Toledo at Detroit
I don't know if it was a Bracketbuster game, but Detroit's Titans stop a little more bleeding as the Toledo Rockets had liftoff... but then had a problem going up. (65-63; DETROIT)

* North Texas at Denver
Now, back to in-conference games. The North Texas Mean Green weren't mean enough to win because Denver Pioneered their way to victory. (79-73; DENVER)

* Hartford at Binghamton
The Hartford Hawks tamed the Binghamton Wildcats. This isn't a good loss to the alma mater of "Pardon the Interruption" co-host and future Monday Night Football commentator, Tony Kornheiser. (52-46; Hartford)

* Memphis at Tulane
The Green Wave were no match for the blue-clad Memphis Tigers. This is sad if you're a Green wave fan. (105-65; Memphis)

* #10 Florida at Arkansas
UPSET!!! Florida's Gators went down in flames as the Arkansas Razorbacks got it done in this SEC clash. (85-81; Arkansas)

* #7 George Washington at Richmond
Back to the Atlantic 10. It's also business as usual since the George Washington Colonials beat another team. This time, the Richmond Spiders. GW is on a MAJOR roll! Believe that, homie. (64-51; George Washington)

* Holy Cross at American
Proud to be an American? You HAVE to be if you're in the Patriot League like Holy Cross and American are. Proud to be American is one thing, but American and winning is better. The American University Eagles didn't get the win as yet another Patriot League team wins. This time, it's the Holy Cross Crusaders. (69-62; Holy Cross)

"West Meets East" Long Beach State at Manhattan
Does it seem that more lesser teams seem to have higher scoring than most of the big schools? This one was an NBA-style scoring game. In the end, it was the Long Beach State 49ers picking up a win against their Jasper counterparts from Manhattan College. (108-94; Long Beach State)

* Gonzaga at Loyola Marymount
Never heard of these two schools? Let me introduce you to them. Goznaga almost needs no introduction. Gonzaga University is one of the 28 Jesuit Colleges and Universities. When it comes to hoops, basketball is religion.
Adam Morrison put up a career-high 44 points to get a share of their sixth straight WCC title. He trais only Chris Jackson (LSU 1989-1990) who has had six 40-point games. Morrison has 5 after this game. (79-70; Gonzaga)

"Trading Baskets: Meet Your New Daddy" Connecticut at West Virginia
Kevin Pittsnoggle of WVU recently became a father. He's the father to a baby boy. The little boy's daddy is probably a Mountaineer in training. Boys and girls, West Virginia battles Connecticut. The Connecticut Huskies have had only a few struggles. After this game, West Virginia is sort of struggling now. Can they pick it up in future games? (81-75; Connecticut)

* Southern at Alabama A&M
Dirty south is up. The hip-hop community may refer the south as the "Dirty South." If that's true, then the Southern Jaguars were fresh and clean in taking down the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on the road. (84-80; Southern)

* Tulsa at Houston
Hometown love now. Tulsa may be known as the Golden Hurricane, but at Hoffheinz Pavillion, Houston felt just a minor breeze and a few drops of sweat. Houston didn't just survive the Golden Hurricane, they basically gave them a Cougar beatdown. Ouch! (73-46; HOUSTON)

* UAB at Southern Mississippi
Talk about beatdowns... Southern Mississippi's seats were pretty empty as the Golden Eagles were burned straight to Hell as the UAB Blazers turned up the heat on Southern Miss. (89-50; Alabama-Birmingham)

* Oakland at Centenary
Let's face it. Centenary College sucks. Oakland hasn't had a good year either. So when two teams are pretty much stuck in neutral, one must advance. And in this case, give the Golden Grizzlies your full, undivided attention because if you think Oakland REALLY stinks, just ask Centenary as the Gents got swept by Oakland this season. (86-76; Oakland)

* Kentucky at South Carolina
South Carolina is the defending NIT champions, and that's where Kentucky is going if they don't get better. This game was close... yeah, right! South Carolina's red colors were painted over with Kentucky Blue. In other words, the Wildcats feasted on some South Carolina-styled Gamecocks. And if you ask the Lexington boys, it tastes pretty good. Win a game, have a dinner, get ready for the next game. Ah, all in the life of a Kentucky Wildcat basketball star... (79-66; Kentucky)

WOMEN'S DIVISION
Let's run down the divas of the hardwood. I selected eight games, so check them out! The girls are gearing up for that road trip to the Women's Final Four in Boston. We start with two Big XII games.

* #21 Texas A&M at #9 Oklahoma
The Lady Aggies fell hard to the Oklahoma Lady Sooners. The Lady Sooners locked up the Big XII Championship. My congratulations to Oklahoma. (73-59; OKLAHOMA)

* Texas at Oklahoma State
The Lady Longhorns hooked Oklahoma State. I'm normally getting tired of this cowgirl fashion trend (despite being a Texan where we're normally used to this), but the Cowgirls took a bad loss. T-shirts may say "Everyone loves a Cowgirl," but only if they don't lose to Texas. (61-56; Texas)

* California at Arizona State
This game wasn't close. The Lady Sun Devils made the California Golden Bears look more like pyrite (fool's gold). (62-43; )

* Youngstown State at Wisconsin-Milwaukee
The Wisconsin-Milwaukee men lose in an upset to Missouri State, but the Lady Panthers didn't lose. In fact, the Lady Penguins of Youngstown State couldn't match up to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. (67-44; WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE)

* Eastern Michigan at Toledo
The men would lose to Detroit, and sadly, the Lady Rockets suffered the same fate, but against Eastern Michigan. (-; )

* Dartmouth at Brown
The Dartmouth men (no score included) finally won a freaking game for once. The Lady Big Green lost to another color- the Brown Bears. (59-54, OT; BROWN)

* St. John's at DePaul
The Lady Blue Demons were demonic in silencing the St. John's Lady Red Storm. (70-67; DEPAUL)

* Butler at Illinois-Chicago
Finally, the Horizon League. It was a great day for Illinois-Chicago's hotties, the Lady Flames, to get it done against the Butler Lady Bulldogs. (85-66; ILLINOIS-CHICAGO)

Now that this week's scores are done, I figured I'll give you something a little extra. I won't do this often, but I want to share something after a bunch of scores, I'll come up with something called "A Little Extra."

A LITTLE EXTRA...
I've played "College Hoops 2K6" on my PS2. And let me tell you. The presentation value is incredible in this game. In addition, many of the arenas and their respective courts seem to look pretty authentic. If you're used to the "NCAA March Madness" series by EA Sports, there are distinct advantages to this game compared to its EA counterpart (I will use NCAA March Madness 2005 as my basis). Such as:

* beautiful presentation value and well-done Play-by-Play commentary
* many arenas and courts done up in lovely detail
* be able to play with Indepedent teams (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, IPFW, and Savannah State for example)
* can generate player names as well as feature some actual coaches like Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph's) and Tom Penders (Houston) for example.
* Create a school, and customize many deep elements from arena to coaches.

But then, there are notable disadvantages:

* many well-known schools are given fight songs of OTHER SCHOOLS! For example, the University of Illinois was given a fight song which sounds close to Ole Miss or something. The University of Houston's fight song is given Texas Tech's fight song. Dig me?
* gameplay mechanics are not as deep as the March Madness series
* Create-a-School could have been deeper, especially with better choices of logos.
* Bill Raferty's commentary. I'd prefer the tandem of Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale, but Verne Lundquist isn't bad.

Now some indirect features:

* features new teams such as Longwood, North Florida, Kennesaw State, and Utah Valley State.

So if you like college basketball, you might enjoy this game, but slightly favor March Madness more. I do think EA can learn from 2K Sports in designing the next installment of March Madness. Some of the arenas I've sampled to look at arenas include a few favorites among people who look at my threads. I've checked out Houston, Illinois (I forget), Oakland University (BlazinXtreme), and even Maryland-Baltimore County (???). Many of the arenas look authentic enough to say that that's how they actually look. Not many of them look phonied up like in NCAA March Madness games. A small percentage of arenas look either unauthentic or had sort of cookie-cutter arenas. Some examples include St. John's, George Washington, Savannah State, and that sort of thing.
