I wanted to quickly get this one underway. I'm sorry I don't have too much time or material to get to regarding Saturday action. So I want to start things off with a match in which if you ain't blue, then you ain't right!

Hardwood Classic Between Two Proven Powers
* North Carolina {Tar Heels} at Kentucky {Wildcats}
North Carolina beat Kentucky at home last season. Now, Kentucky hosts the blue crew from Chapel Hill. Before I left with my parents out on the road, Kentucky trailed by as many as 20 with about 8 or so minutes left in the game. This was a crushing loss. Billy Gillispie REALLY needs to turn around Kentucky and fast. Otherwise, he'll end his Kentucky career with as many titles as Eddie Sutton won for Kentucky (in other words- NONE). (86-77; North Carolina)

I'm not sure if that was the actual score or not. During the game that I saw, Dick Vitale was talking about how he was rather saddened that Tubby Smith left for Minnesota after doing such a great job at Kentucky. All I know is that it's not going to get much better for Kentucky since they have to go to Indiana next Saturday.

FoolKiller, tell me about the North Carolina/Kentucky game from Saturday afternoon and how you felt about the result.

I was at the Oakland v. Bowling Green game yesterday. Everyone was predicting a Bowling Green win and during the first half it looked like it was going to be that way, but during the second half the Grizzlies pulled it together and ended up coming up with a win. (Oakland wins 90-80).

One thing that really annoyed me about the game was the refs, they made some poor calls and I thought our student section was going to riot during the second half. Bowling Green clearly had knocked the ball out of bounds but for whatever reason the refs gave them the ball back. There was also many poorly called fouls as well, in the first have there was something like 16-18 fouls called between the teams.

I'd like to congratulate Oakland on a job well done. Hell, if Oakland had a football team and played in FBS, Oakland over Bowling Green State would be an upset. There aren't too many glamourous points to this Oakland University team, but every big win will help the selection committee make up their mind about putting Oakland into the Big Dance. Congratulations to your Golden Grizzlies.

Thanks 👍! I'm not expecting Oakland to go to the sweet sixteen this year (although they have in the past) but they are playing quite well. They start Summit League action on Thursday and hopefully I can get to the game.

With football, we will never have a team since there is no room on our small campus to even build a stadium. However every year we talk about it and it gets shot down by someone.

There was a big upset in Los Angeles. The #8 Texas Longhorns made plenty of people in Austin proud as they knocked off #2 UCLA on the road. They won in 63-61 in a neck and neck race. My congratulations to one of my own Texas schools. Perhaps, the flagship university of sports in Texas. The Bruins didn't have enough gusto late to defend home court.

FoolKiller, tell me about the North Carolina/Kentucky game from Saturday afternoon and how you felt about the result.
Crazy story, I play video games all day Saturday, watch a movie, and then while watching the news with my wife I see them say it is December 1st. I look at my wife and say, "Is it December 1st?" She says, "Yes," and I realize I missed the game because I thought it was the next day. :guilty:

From what I understand and watching highlights Kentucky held their own until the second half when North Carolina scored 8 unanswered points. Our seniors aren't stepping up and doing anything while freshman Patrick Patterson looks like he had the wrong jersey on. Not enough looks, not enough rebounding, not enough getting down the floor. Basically, the same things that Coach Gillispie says is our problem, not enough fundamentals. And while these are typically issues that can be overcome in time two of our big leaders are injured. We need a leader and Jasper and Meeks were the guys to do that. Stevenson isn't a take charge kind of guy, Crawford gets too concerned about winning to lead, and Patterson is too concerned about himself to lead.

It will be a tough year, but we have the ability to come through the season.

All of this is part of the beauty of college basketball. I'm going to admit that you have a greater chance of taking down a more powerful team in college hoops than you do with college football. A lot of people still make a lot of buzz about Gardner-Webb going into Rupp Arena and stunning Kentucky. People have to drive down Houston's losses to North Carolina State and Georgetown during the Phi Slamma Jamma days. Smaller schools and weaker teams have a chance to be major. Even think about UNLV beating Duke in 1990 for the crown. You want to say that anything's possible in college basketball. But sometimes, you just heavily seem to favor big-name schools. You know... Kentucky, Arizona, North Carolina, UCLA, Michigan State, Indiana, and you go on from there.

I think there are some people who say a certain school isn't deserving if a mid-major or low-major has an amazing run. What I think playoffs are for is not to rank the best team by a poll; but instead, rank teams as the best judging on who's better longer. You can tell me all day that (for example) North Carolina is the best school in the nation. But what if the school had a bunch of freshmen who could be beaten easily by teams like Savannah State or Iona? Or think about last season's March Madness. If Duke is such an amazing school, then explain how they started 0-2 in ACC play en route to losing to #11 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round? Imagine if Connecticut had a Houston-like season in which they won at least 26-straight games heading into March Madness... then lose (let's say UConn is a #1 seed) to a team like Detroit or Murray State. Is UConn really a great team because they ripped an amazing winning streak, or are they a bad program because they easily lost to a team that they could beat? I think the toughest thing to do in basketball is to win many consecutive games. You can run the table in college football, but not basketball. I always say that you can lose in basketball... just don't lose often. So we'll see what team will be better for longer as the season progresses.

FoolKiller, your Wildcats will hit the road to meet Indiana. North Carolina was a tough team, and Indiana probably won't do Kentucky many favors. How can Kentucky beat Indiana at Indiana with the way this team is playing right now? And as some off-topic questions... do you have any all-time favorite Kentucky Wildcats? Do you play basketball personally, or just like watching basketball?

FoolKiller, your Wildcats will hit the road to meet Indiana. North Carolina was a tough team, and Indiana probably won't do Kentucky many favors. How can Kentucky beat Indiana at Indiana with the way this team is playing right now?
Honestly, I don't know. Maybe I will take the Gillispie line: Fundamentals. If they can get those down they have the talent to do the rest. However with Legion looking to transfer and then rumors that he changed his mind I don't know what the mindset of the team will be like. I think Legion is upset that he will most likely be overshadowed by Patterson until one of them leaves. It sure can't be playing time, as he is sixth in overall playing time. A freshman cannot complain about that.

And as some off-topic questions... do you have any all-time favorite Kentucky Wildcats?
Honestly, my favorites are probably some of the guys like Travis Ford, and John Pelphrey, from those years. Those were the years when I was still living at home in middle school and high school (technically we were a six year high school with no middle) and they would do their barn storming tour with the seniors after the season was over. They were purely classy guys. They would eat dinner before their little exhibition game and then when they signed autographs afterword they stayed until everyone had gotten through the line. They would even argue with the UK marketers who only wanted them to sign memorabilia you bought there.

And then of course, I have to like Tayshaun Prince. It probably helps that we attended school at UK at the same time for a couple of years and he wasn't one of the players that you would see walking around with an entourage not talking to anyone else. He would usually look like any other student, except tall, because he was just walking with one or two friends and would say hi to anyone who said something to him.

The only other athlete I saw that humble was Artose Pinner. I actually had a couple of classes with him and he always attended and participated in group activities. He was actually nervous doing presentations.

Do you play basketball personally, or just like watching basketball?
I enjoy playing but I am only good if I don't have to do any of that running, jumping, and stuff. I'm good at HORSE and Baseketball. I lack zero talent, probably because I am short and out of shape. It is fun to play though. My biggest issue is that my mind and body do not coordinate well enough to make the strategies work out. I can watch a game and know where things should go and where guys are supposed to be and read a defense and everything, but on a court all I see are nine other guys standing and I'm not sure where I am supposed to be. I can either strategize or I can run around by myself shooting 5 out of 10 shots. But if I have to do both I get myself lost and the moment I try to spend time finding a hole in the defense I lose the ball. Football is the same way for me.

If I can see it all from above I can play it, like a video game.

Believe it or not, FoolKiller, I've been meaning to ask you those two off-topic questions for a while. Just never got around to that until now.

So I've mentioned Kentucky and Oakland on here. Any of you other GTPlanet fans want to share your favorite team? One guy likes UCLA while another loves his Retrivers from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. So if you have a favorite team, let's chat!

Hi, everyone! This past Wednesday marks four years of JohnBM01 on GTPlanet. So I'll just hand you some scores, and you comment if you like. So here are a few scores in my limited contributions:

Hilltoppers Meet Some Cornhuskers
* Nebraska {Cornhuskers} at Western Kentucky {Hilltoppers}
The Hilltoppers led Nebraska 29-24 after one half. But in the second half, regulation didn't solve anything. So bring on Overtime. And Western Kentucky improves to 6-2 with an overtime victory over the Cornhuskers. (79-72, OT; WESTERN KENTUCKY)

WKU will travel to Richmond, KY to meet Eastern Kentucky's Colonels in this rivalry game.

The Battle for Utah
* Utah State {Aggies} at Utah {Utes}
This wasn't close. The Utes brUTE-talize Utah State. The Aggies are going to need plenty of medical attention after this beatdown! (72-48; UTAH)

Close Firefight in Nashville
* Wake Forest {Demon Deacons} at #23 Vanderbilt {Commodores}
The Demon Deacons lost to a better Vandy team. The Commodores went platinum in taking out Wake Forest. (83-80; VANDERBILT)

Two Jesuit Universities Clash in a Missouri Valley vs. Atlantic-10 Showdown
* Creighton {Blue Jays} at #21 Xavier {Musketeers}
"X" marks the spot in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team whose logo is a big "X" is ready to go at it. This is actually a great matchup on paper. The Xavier Musketeers had to feel good about a 13-point runaway victory over the Blue Jays of Creighton. (79-66; #21 XAVIER)

Rock and Roll in Texas
* Rice {Owls} at Texas State {Bobcats}
I'm tired of hitting the road. So let me head back to my home state of Texas. Let's go to San Marcos, TX to see how Rice does against Texas State University. The Rice Owls pulled out a nice win against a fairly good Bobcat team. (88-81; Rice)

Now for a few women's scores.

The Cy-Hawk Trophy Battle... Women's Version... on Hardwood ~Women~
* Iowa {Hawkeyes} at Iowa State {Cyclones}
The Lady Cyclones took care of business against Iowa's Lady Hawkeyes. (58-44; IOWA STATE)

Southern California's Southernmost City Prepares for a City Championship ~Women~
* San Diego {Toreros} at San Diego State {Aztecs}
The Lady Aztecs were better than the San Diego Lady Toreros (what is the female version of a torero?). (58-53; SAN DIEGO STATE)

Two Sides of Florida Square Off ~Women~
* North Florida {Ospreys} at South Florida {Bulls}
The Lady Bulls of South Florida welcomed Jacksonville's University of North Florida. North Florida doesn't have a football team, but the Ospreys also don't have a win when they took on South Florida. (75-68; SOUTH FLORIDA)

Beautiful San Francisco has Beautiful Basketball ~Women~
* Sacromento State {Hornets} at San Francisco {Dons}
The Lady Dons of the Jesuit school, the University of San Francisco, took care of business against the Lady Hornets of Sacromento State. (70-57; SAN FRANCISCO)

A Virginia School Steps Into the Mecca of Women's Basketball ~Women~
* #24 Old Dominion (Monarchs) at #1 Tennessee (Volunteers)
Tennessee's basketball arena is Thompson-Boling Arena. When the men aren't around, Tennessee's ladies are working the hardwood under the leadership of the outstanding Pat Summitt. The Lady Volunteers dethroned Old Dominion's Lady Monarchs in a not-even-close deal. (83-51; #1 TENNESSEE)

And that would be all. Have a great day.

My limited contributions to college basketball come to a head again. So why not take a look at some of my few scores I got for you all?

NOTE: The following scores were from Saturday. I forgot to post these on Saturday.

Before I begin, I'd like to welcome CBS Sports for starting up a new season of NCAA Men's Basketball on CBS. We start with two of the best basketball teams playing in Indiana. I have only men's scores this time, so let's get to it!

Kentucky's Turn-Around Efforts Aren't Going to Manifest Themselves in Bloomington
* Kentucky {Wildcats} at #15 Indiana {Hoosiers}
Just by looking at the heading, you know that Kentucky is in a situation they aren't commonly in. Either Gillispie's system isn't yet tattooed into his team, or Kentucky just isn't the kind of vintage program they are usually. Time to turn her around. What do you say, FoolKiller? Let's see if your felines delivered in their first road game of the season. The Indiana Hoosiers have won over five national championships. They've had about 56 All-Americans. Over eight Final Four appearances. It's a basketball rivalry that's been around since about 1921. While Indiana has five championships, Kentucky has seven. Lexington, Kentucky is the kind of place a college basketball star looking to splash in the NBA would want to go to. This season's Kentucky is in a slump so far. Not every team is dominant all the time. And it's too early to sack Billy Gillispie. Too early to send him back to Texas A&M. Kentucky knows this isn't going to be easy, so the Wildcats play to win. But did they? Kentucky basically watched Indiana dole out some unanswered points. Some of the same issues that I've seen on TV are some of the same ones that keep Kentucky down and out- ball control issues and trouble draining high-percentage shots. I don't live in Kentucky, but I can be sure that there are a huge number of Wildcat fans not very happy right now with Kentucky's performance. Indiana got her done and sent Kentucky packing. I was alternating between the All-America program on ABC and this game. But after a while, I knew this one was over. (70-51; #15 INDIANA)

OFF-TOPIC
I didn't know that the two Crawfords played. That's right- TWO Crawfords. Kentucky's Joe Crawford went up against his younger brother, Jordan Crawford for Indiana. Both are from Detroit.

So Kentucky didn't win. However, FoolKiller, I can brighten up your day some with this next score report:

Dayton Can Soar With the Best of Them... Ask Louisville
* Dayton {Flyers} at #14 Louisville {Cardinals}
Dayton took to the skies and soared their way into Freedom Hall. While Louisville fans were proud their hated Kentucky Wildcats lost, Louisville's boys need to thank their fans for being so loyal. So what they did as a proposition was knock Dayton out of the sky. After all, Cardinals are the airborne creatures in Freedom Hall. Just don't tell Dayton. The University of Dayton has a great football team, and their men's basketball team are no slouches either. Dayton is a religious-type school in the Atlantic 10. Some may argue that the Atlantic 10 is the best mid-major conference with all due respect to the Missouri Valley Conference. Some may even argue that the Dayton Flyers are simply better than Louisville. Those who argued in favor of Dayton were right. Louisville didn't win this one. The sad part of all of this is that both of Kentucky's finest basketball programs both lost. (70-65; Dayton) *** upset! ***

Oakland Expects a No-Sweat Exercise Against Southern Utah
* Southern Utah {Thunderbirds} at Oakland {Golden Grizzlies}
Only a few teams are from Utah in Division 1. The University of Utah is the best there in most sports. BYU (featured later) is an impressive team themselves. The bottomfeeders of Utah college basketball are a toss-up between Southern Utah and Utah Valley State College. Southern Utah will meet some boys who want to shine in the Summit League... even if their nickname suggest something luminous and bright. The Thunderbirds are ready to strike down on the city of Rochester, MI and a team that calls this city home. Oakland University has nothing to do with the Bay Area. It is instead a small school in southeastern Michigan, and the school of GTPlanet's Joey D. So let's see if his boys took care of business. The Golden Grizzlies want to send SUU back to where they came from. SUU's Thunderbirds probably drove to Rochester, MI in Ford Thunderbirds for all I know. All joking aside, it wasn't a laughing matter as Southern Utah barely edged out Oakland with an NBA-style score. (90-85; Southern Utah)

Football Power Meets Basketball Power... Guess Who Wins
* Michigan {Wolverines} at #?? Duke {Blue Devils}
Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Cameron Crazies. Coach K. All or most of the things FoolKiller hates besides flagrant disregard to Louisville. The Michigan Wolverines are the most imposing boys on the gridiron. In college basketball, they aren't the only Wolverines (Utah Valley State Wolverines). Michigan's been on the losing end including a surprise win by Oakland University over Michigan. So this is a chance for Duke to show off what they are made of. This was the first of a doubleheader on CBS Sports. The Blue Devils are so ready to make up for a terrible 2006-2007 by taking care of Michigan like they were a High School team. Michigan's heading down the tubes at a faster speed. Can Michigan recover? Not in Durham. (95-67; DUKE)

A SOCON Team Wants to Take an 11-Time National Champion Back to School
* Davidson {Wildcats} at UCLA {Bruins}
Some of America were still stunned when when Gardner-Webb beat Kentucky. While Davidson isn't an Atlantic Sun team, they are an extremely capable Southern Conference (SOCON) team. The UCLA Bruins were facing defeat until they finally pulled away from the Wildcats of Davidson College. (75-63; CALIFORNIA-LOS ANGELES)

Seattle's Premier Team meet some Steeler Folk
* Pittsburgh {Panthers} at Washington {Huskies}
This match would be Steelers at the Seahawks if this was the NFL. The Panthers go to 9-0 by taking down Washington's Huskies. Washington thought they upset Pittsburgh in the closing moments, but upon further review, Washington still had the ball in their hands as the clock wound down. So Pittsburgh remains unbeaten. Sorry, Washington. (75-74; #? Pittsburgh)

Lumberjacks Look to Chop Down a HUGE Tree
* Stephen F. Austin {Lumberjacks} at Oklahoma {Sooners}
Nobody saw this coming. The Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin State University chopped down some quality Oklahoma Sooner wood. (66-60; Stephen F. Austin)
*** big win ***

Thanks for reading. Comment at will.

Kentucky's Turn-Around Efforts Aren't Going to Manifest Themselves in Bloomington
* Kentucky {Wildcats} at #15 Indiana {Hoosiers}
Just by looking at the heading, you know that Kentucky is in a situation they aren't commonly in. I was alternating between the All-America program on ABC and this game. But after a while, I knew this one was over. (70-51; #15 INDIANA)
The more reasonable fans in Kentucky recognize we may need a few years for Gillispie to get things his way, or we may just have our two team leaders out.

OFF-TOPIC
I didn't know that the two Crawfords played. That's right- TWO Crawfords. Kentucky's Joe Crawford went up against his younger brother, Jordan Crawford for Indiana. Both are from Detroit.
I didn't realize it until gameday myself. One thing this game showed me si that Joe Crawford is not the most talented person in his family.

The sad part of all of this is that both of Kentucky's finest basketball programs both lost.[/B] (70-65; Dayton) *** upset! ***
It just means that I don't have to suffer the Louisville fans at work today. Neither program looks to be anything outstanding.

I'm giving Kentucky the benefit of the doubt here. Because you're one of my friends on GTP, FoolKiller, I'm willing to give your Wildcats some love. Who knows? They may start slow and finish strong. This characteristic has been somewhat typical of my Houston pro teams. There's still about three months left before we can SERIOUSLY evaluate Billy G. and his Kentucky team. I probably wouldn't feel too bad at this point. You may have your ideas, but I think this isn't the time to hit the panic button just yet.

I really think thsi may be a case of Gillispie making sweeping program changes and it will take a while for the players to adapt. In these situations some players cannot adapt. Only two players are Gillispie recruits and one is looking to transfer.

That is why I think we may see a few years of struggle. Gillispie and his coaching is completely different than the Tubby era. It will take time and our best, most adaptive players are out right now.

Worst case scenario: Gilliapie is the exact opposite of Tubby and can recruit but bad at strategy. I haven't seen anything to make me think that yet though so I really think we are just in an adjustment phase and it may take longer than I would like for it to happen.

I know this news is very late. However, I want to wish Lute Olson the very best in trying to go through with a divorce. He won't be coaching for Arizona. I sometimes think it can be very tough dealing with personal matters. Some players in sports (and even some coaches) aren't usually able to go around with the team and stuff because of personal issues. Any physical injury to you is bad as it is, but any sort of personal issues are really a tough break. So I wish Lute Olson(?) well in going through this tough time. I'm sure his [Arizona] Wildcats will do well without him trotting the sidelines.

FoolKiller, your Wildcats are heading back to Lexington for a little home cooking against UAB. The Blazers of the University of Alabama-Birmingham are usually a pretty dangerous team. Not great, but good. Trouble is, they've been singing the blues lately. Not having a very good season. I'm going to be honest. I think Kentucky can truly turn it around against a team like UAB. And if Kentucky doesn't somehow beat UAB, then they MAY have a chance against my hometown Houston Cougars. The game at Houston will be on Tuesday next week. I'd like to say that Houston beats Kentucky in our friendly rivalry, but I don't think Houston is THAT good at this point. The only loss I know they have was in a thriller against Virginia Commonwealth.

I'm now going to talk some scores. I had my chat with [B}FoolKiller[/B], but I'll get to Joey D later in this report. But first...

The Pride of Cincinnati is on the Line!
* Cincinnati {Bearcats} at #17 Xavier {Musketeers} --- RIVALRY GAME: Crosstown Shootout ---
Get ready, Cincy! We got some basketball action among the city's two finest teams. We have the former National Champions in football with the University of Cincinnati followed by a potent basketball team that carries a big blue "X"- Xavier University. Let's meet some kitties first. The University of Cincinnati is one of the largest schools in Ohio. They were a former National Champion in football, not to mention a two-time(?) champ in men's hoops. They call their teams by the Bearcats. They got the Bearcat namesaske when they played against the University of Kentucky way back in probably the 1910s or much earlier. Cincy hopes to bear down if they want to beat down Xavier. Xavier University had a successful football team, but they're now trying to come up with a club football team. In basketball, Xavier has a wonderful program. Xavier University is one of America's 27 Jesuit schools. This is a religious institution that is based about three miles west or east of the U. of Cincinnati. The Musketeers are all for one and one for all in trying to slap around Cincinnati some. We got a crosstown rivalry. We also a have a score. It was a thrilling finish at one point, but Xavier took care of business when it mattered most. (64-59; #17 XAVIER)

SIDE NOTE:
Typical ESPN fashion... they don't include the Houston/Rice rivalry in regards to rival schools close by. I'm almost going to never trust ESPN to give ANY sort of good commentary on Texas or Houston teams. If Houston's that bad or insignificant, then just don't talk about us, damn it.

OFF-TOPIC
Totally unrelated to sports... someone in another Ohio city that starts with a "C" (Cleveland) found a briefcase or something with something covered in 1930s newspaper. The end result? It was a stash of $182,000 in cash. It's said that today's value of these American dollars can be as much as $500,000 total. Can you imagine having all this money in your house without even knowing it?

Some Grizzlies Want to Show the University of Michigan How Pathetic They Are in Hoops
* Oakland {Golden Grizzlies} at Michigan {Wolverines}
It's time to test Joey D's loyalties. He loves Michigan football, but highly supports Oakland basketball. So let's test the loyalties for a spell. We meet Michigan first. The University of Michigan isn't known for too much basketball success. Okay, they won a National Championship, but they aren't greatly known as being a fearful place to play hoops at. They are still Wolverines who are looking for the best Michigan 'ballers since Michigan's Fab Five from the 1990s. Now let's meet Oakland. Rochester, Michigan is home to Oakland University. It is also home to a pack of golden creatures that can play hoops. The Golden Grizzlies aren't on a lot of peoples' radars to be a diamond in the rough. They aren't Winthrop. They aren't Santa Clara. They aren't even Gonzaga. What these boys hope NOT to be is Wolverine lunch meat. Ann Arbor is not a good place to feed yourself to the Wolverines (who'd want to feed themselves to mangy animals anyhow? Even if you're doing Jackass stunts). In the end, Oakland's Golden Grizzlies were reduced to pyrite by the hungry Wolverines. Both teams are now 4-6 on the season. (103-87; MICHIGAN)

EXTRA: What's in a Name?
Any game with Utah Valley State College, I forgot their new name is Utah Valley University. Texas State used to be Southwestern Texas State. You know how it goes- new name, same great team.

I think to avoid confusion in IUPUI games, I can simply type in "Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis." I learned this way of typing in IUPUI when I seen some other website or TV show referring to them as Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis. This is very easy even considering Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Back to basketball!

Okay to Call DePaul the Pride of Chicago?
* #1? Vanderbilt {Commodores} at DePaul {Blue Demons}
Nashville meets Chicago. This would be the Tennessee Titans at the Chicago Bears if this was the NFL. But we have a basketball power that's mediocre in football, and a non-football school that is somewhat mediocre in basketball (except their women's team). Actually, this is a men's game featuring two great women's basketball teams. So let's meet the two. Vanderbilt brings the SEC up to the Midwest. This school in Nashville, Tennessee was once called the most beautiful university in America. The Commodores hope to do a beautiful job in a game televised on ESPN Classic. Now let's meet the DePaul boys. DePaul is a Big East school that has the Chicago area on lock. This is a religious-type university in Chicago. They may well be the best college team Chicago has. I still consider Illnois-Chicago as one of the most potent teams from the Chicago area. The Blue Demons aren't going to play Mr. Nice Guy with Vandy. This game required overtime. Regulation didn't solve anything, but Vanderbilt avoids being upset in Chi-town. (9?-8?, OT; #19 Vanderbilt)

DID YOU KNOW...
...that the only Chicago-area school to win the men's National Championship was Loyola University of Chicago? This was back in the 1960s for the Ramblers.

A Northern California Clash Ensues Between Two Six-Win Clubs
* Pacific {Tigers} at Santa Clara {Broncos}
I welcome all of you to Santa Clara, CA. It's the battle of Stockton and Santa Clara. California will win, but which school? Let's meet Santa Clara first. Santa Clara University is part of the West Coast Conference. The WCC is a conference full of private religious institutions that don't have football (except the University of San Diego). SCU football was impressive until their final season in 1993. To be honest, I don't know too much about Santa Clara in terms of facilities and how it looks. The Broncos are looking good with only a few losses. They'll host some boys from Stockton. Pacific is their sports name; their full name is the University of the Pacific. This is a beautiful university from what I've seen in pictures. Pacific is more of an urban university. They are part of the Big West conference. They used to have football there, but their final season was in 1995 in (then) 1-A. The Tigers want to take apart some horsies. Maybe they'll do just that on the road. Let's see. (71-65; Pacific)

That's all I got in my limited contributions. I have to update my college football thread and update the playoff races in Divisions FCS through 3. You all are free to bring up your own college hoops talk. This is YOUR thread.

I have a quick report to show.

* UAB vs. Kentucky --- Freedom Hall; Louisville, Kentucky ---
I thought Kentucky hates Louisville. I also didn't know that Kentucky plays about one game out of the year at Freedom Hall. I saw about one half of play. Kentucky led by 12 and shown some character at the halftime buzzer. But as the game wound down, UAB really was dangerous. Kentucky falls to 4-4. A truly uncharacterstic Wildcats program so far. (79-76; Alabama-Birmingham)

DID YOU KNOW...
...that (counting this game) Kentucky is 49-12 all-time playing at Freedom Hall against teams other than Louisville?

John's Personal Motivation...
...for Kentucky:
This is surely not a vintage Kentucky team. The thing I usually bank on is that impressive teams with terrible starts usually finish strong. Kentucky is 4-4 right now and play at the University of Houston Tuesday night. I obviously want my Houston Cougars to win the game, but I'd feel like a villain in saying that I want one of the nation's proudest and winningest college basketball programs to go down and be 4-5 heading to Houston. I really thought Kentucky was going to win this game. You don't lead by 12 just to get beat by 3. This is a tough season so far for Kentucky blue. For Kentucky, they'll be playing a team that's surely far from "Phi Slamma Jamma" back in the 1980s. I think Kentucky has to turn it around. A trip to America's Space City may prove that. I was truly stunned that UAB knocked off Kentucky. Hell, we're having a coaching problem here in Houston with Rick Adelman and the Houston Rockets. The Billy Gillispie coaching of Kentucky is starting to be more like that. The Wildcats can't be the basketball version of the 2007 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. So I hope that Kentucky can pull it together in this seemingly tough season.

OTHER DIVISION 1 MEN'S SCORES:

* #?? Louisville at Purdue (67-59; PURDUE) *** upset! *** <<< a UL win would have given Pitino 500 wins

* Florida State at #19 Butler (79-68; #19 BUTLER)

Thanks for reading my report!

Do you realize that Christmas is next Tuesday? Better get your Christmas shopping done before it's time for Christmas 2007! On a sympathic note, you won't be hearing Dick Vitale between now and about February because he had to had vocal chord surgery. Hope you have a speedy and good recovery, Dickie V!

Now let's hit the court. My hometown Houston Cougars meet FoolKiller's Kentucky Wildcats. But first, an almost complete comeback in Atlanta. Let's talk about it.

Atlanta's Favorite Insects Look to Sting Kansas
* Kansas {Jayhawks} at Georgia Tech {Yellow Jackets}
The A.T.L. is ready for action as Georgia Tech will set it off against Kansas. Kansas is unbeaten in their trip to Atlanta. (71-66; #3 Kansas)

Storied Basketball Programs Clash in America's Space City
* Kentucky {Wildcats} at Houston {Cougars} --- JohnBM01 vs. FoolKiller friendly rivalry ---
I call this a friendly rivalry because I like Houston, and FoolKiller is a Kentucky alum. He's one of my loyal fans in my reports. So I figured we'd have a little duel. Let's meet Kentucky first. The University of Kentucky is led by Billy Gillispie. Most Kentucky fans probably regret running Tubby Smith out of town. Reason being is because Kentucky has lost three straight games before their trip to Houston. The Wildcats got blazed by three when they took on the UAB Blazers in Louisville. Now that Kentucky's done renting Freedom Hall for a day, it's time Kentucky takes on Houston at the aging Hoffheinz Pavillion. Kentucky is 4-4. Houston is 9-1. Most of their teams have been weaker opponents like the College of Charleston and a pretty good Coastal Carolina team. The city of Houston has over 4.1 million people. Among the many in the Houston area and in Houston suburbs, fans of the scarlet and white want to see the Cougars rub out the Kentucky crew. Opportunistic types say this is a perfect chance to beat Kentucky because Kentucky is not very good right now. Add to this that Kentucky is 3-0 all-time against Houston, this may be Houston's best chance to pick up a huge win. I'm ready. Are you, FoolKiller? Let's see how this game goes.

There was some star power in the house at Hoffheinz Pavillion. Houston's "Phi Slamma Jamma" members as well as the NBA's Houston Rockets were in the house. Folks like Clyde Drexler, Tracy McGrady, Rafer Alston, Michael Young, former Kentucky Wildcat Chuck Hayes, and more were in the 8,000+ strong crowd. Houston seemed to pull away early as they've been racking up points with an offense that lives and dies on the three-pointer. It was McKiver vs. Crawford. At times, Kentucky netted themselves frustration fouls. Crawford had either a Technical Foul or a Flagrant Foul on one play. Billy G. got himself a Technical Foul for being outside the Coaches' box. Houston led by as many as 25 at one point. Either Houston won a serious holeshot, or Kentucky broke on the line. Houston's 10-1 and have won nine(?) straight. A win over Kentucky is a win over Kentucky. This loss hurts, doesn't it, FoolKiller? (83-69; HOUSTON) *** big win ***

SIDE NOTE:
A number of Texas teams have either one loss or no losses at all. Houston's part of this list including teams like Texas (unbeaten), Baylor, Stephen F. Austin State, Texas-Arlington, a surprising Sam Houston State, and other Texas teams with one loss or less.

OFF-TOPIC/PERSONAL COMMENTS
Part of me thought that Houston was going to be outclassed because I always thought Houston (or at least Texas) teams can't win on ABC/ESPN broadcasts. Something about me is that I pretend a struggling team is a good team just looking to revitalize themselves. Houston played with character and perhaps with a daredevil attitude. I honestly thought Houston was going to lose this game and that Kentucky would have new life. Well, Kentucky now has more questions and fewer answers. To think that Kentucky trailed by as many as 25 at one point (and I saw most of this game even alternating between playing "TrackMania Sunrise" and this game), something is really and truly wrong. I think Kentucky will get over this hump. I don't know if it's the coaching system, the players themselves, Billy Gillispie in general, or what. Billy G. came back to Texas and lost to a team that could go quite far in Conference USA. Houston's big problem will be Memphis, but Kentucky really needs a spark. And before people give up on Kentucky, remember that they have to play in the SEC against teams like LSU and Florida. They still have the Battle of the Bluegrass against Louisville next year (Jan. 2008). This team is 4-5, but not for long. They WILL get a winning season. Question is, can they do it soon enough and save face for this winning program? I think Kentucky can get back to winning because they get Tennessee Tech this Saturday, San Diego next Saturday, then they end 2007 with a game against Florida International. I predict Kentucy to win all three of these games to go to 7-5. This will set them up for their match Jan. 5, 2008 vs. Louisville (like Kentucky NEEDS motivation when Louisville comes to town). All games will be at Rupp Arena. So enjoy some home cooking, Wildcat faithful!

Marshall Has Thunder, but Rick Pitino Hopes to Have the Lightning to Win
Marshall {Thundering Herd} at Louisville {Cardinals}
I'm sure Kentucky fans were done writing "Louisville Sux" and "Believe in Blue" when Kentucky played against UAB on Saturday. Now Louisville comes back home. Rick Pitino will get his 500th win. But will it come here? Let's talk about Marshall first. Louisville used to be in Conference USA while Marshall used to be a MAC school. West Virginia's other school in Division 1 is insignificant and lacks a sufficient spark in football and basketball. The Thundering Herd look ready to stampede over Louisville. Next is Louisville. The 'Ville can't wait to show why they kick so much ass. Papa John's Cardinal Stadium is the football home, and Freedom Hall is the basketball home. Louisville fans probably think that they can teach Kentucky how to win basketbal games at Freedom Hall, and that's something the Cardinals hope to do against the inferior Thundering Herd. The score was deadlocked at 37 at the half. Rick Pitino picks up 500 career wins all-time winning by a dime in this game. Pitino got to 500 wins 5th fastest and passes Adolph Rupp in the rankings. (85-75; LOUISVILLE)

Texas vs. Oklahoma! A Red River Shootout... with a Difference
* Oral Roberts {Golden Eagles} at Texas {Longhorns}
It's not the battle of Norman and Austin. Instead, it's Austin vs. Tulsa. Oral Roberts is a religious school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles are expected to win the Summit League against teams like North Dakota State and Oakland. Better get yourself some quality Texas cooking for this one! Yeah. Get yourself some Texas-style ribs and stuff for this one. The University of Texas is the flagship university of the state of Texas as well as Texas athletics. The Longhorns are deeply talented and want to show America they are more than a football school. Texas won by 10 as this one came to an end. Texas remains unbeaten. (66-56; #6(?) TEXAS)

Let me take you out west now.

Beautiful San Francisco Meets Amazing Long Beach in a NoCal/SoCal Shootout
* San Francisco {Dons} at Long Beach State {49ers}
I hope you love California. I'm not just talking to you all who have Hollister clothes bearing something along the lines of "I love California." I'm talking about a former National Champion going up against a team whose football program ended more than a decade ago. Let's meet the two. Long Beach State can be found in southern California. The full name of Long Beach State is California State University of Long Beach. They are called the Dirtbags in baseball and the 49ers in most other sports. Long Beach State will be looking for gold, and what an appropriate opponent. That would be the University of San Francisco. The University of San Francisco wishes they could clone Bill Russell dozens and dozens of times until they can't keep cloning anymore. USaFr is known for their amazing football team that had their program sacked back in the 1950s or the 1960s. It is a Catholic university set out in the beautiful city of San Francisco. The Dons ready, willing, and able to help move their basketball program in the right direction. Long Beach State found gold alright. They took San Francisco to school and made them pay for coming down to Long Beach. (71-68; LONG BEACH STATE)

~Women's Basketball~ Lady Horned Frogs Prepared for Amphibious Assault Against Some Cowgirls
* #20 Oklahoma State {Cowgirls} at TCU {Lady Horned Frogs}
Welcome to Fort Worth, Texas! We are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for this matchup here. The Lady Horned Frogs of TCU pulled a big dupe over the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State. (97-63; TEXAS CHRISTIAN) *** upset! ***

These were the scores I have you for you all in my limited contributions. Hope you've enjoyed this report. College football bowl season will kick off soon, so most of my contributions will be even limited until college football is truly done.

We got two big matches tonight with two different genders. We got two undefeateds ready to go at it as Pittsburgh and Duke make ready to set it off. I think it will be at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Then on the women's side, it's Louisville at Kentucky. It's the Battle of the Bluegrass by the fairer sex. Kentucky's ladies may have a tough time in the SEC, but we'll see if the Lady Wildcats can trump the Lady Cardinals.

Even though college football Bowl Season will get underway tonight, I'll make a few mentions of what happened in Lexington and in New York. Enjoy your college hoops, players!

By the way... Oakland University won themselves a game last night. Granted this was against Rochester College. Joey D, your Golden Grizzlies will get some face time this Saturday on ESPNU at Oakland University (I believe) against Oregon. So if I'm home by then, I'll get a chance to watch your Golden Grizzlies in action.

I'll be at the game on Saturday, it's at the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Detroit Pistons play their games at. I think Michigan State is playing prior to Oakland.

Last night, there was a thrilling match between Pittsburgh and Duke. It was a nailbiter that went into Overtime. In the end, Pittsburgh may have assured their place in March Madness with a statement win over Duke. The Panthers go to 11-0 while #7 Duke suffers their first loss. (66-65; #9 Pittsburgh) *** upset! ***

The Bulldogs of #20 Gonzaga got upset by unranked Oklahoma's Sooners in a 72-68 win.

Hope you have a great Friday.

Oakland won tonight in a hard fought match against the Oregon Ducks. I believe the game was broadcast on ESPN-U or something.

Oakland started off strong but were plagued by fouls and poor offense in just before and after the half. They came on strong with about 7 minutes remaining and ended up pulling out a victory. It was cool to be there since the students got to move down to almost being on the floor. We were on TV numerous times.

Final: (21) Oregon 62 Oakland 68

Oregon is now 8-3 and Oakland is 6-6 (1-1 Summit League)

I'm busy with college football bowl action. However, I'm down for college hoops. Ready to dump the ball inside and try to get an open jumper on me?

~ John's Quick Reports ~
I'm going to start with a quick overview of ESPN's "Saturday to Remember." It all began with a curcial match

FoolKiller, what did I tell you? Kentucky returned home to try to turn around Wildcat basketball. It would be a great shame if Kentucky lost to any Ohio Valley Conference team (other than Eastern Kentucky or Murray State). Tennessee Tech's Golden Eagles weren't so golden in a 69-47 beatdown. Even though it's Tennessee Tech, this is a big win for Kentucky. Maybe this can help Kentucky regain their stride and make up for their losing ways. Their final opponent of 2007 is at home against the University of San Diego. San Diego's football program is amazing. Their men's basketball team is middle-of-the-road at best. This may give Kentucky a bigger lift next Saturday.

Now to help give Joey D some praise. It's the FIRST EVER meeting between Oregon and Oakland. Here's the starting five for Oakland:

G Jones
G Kangas
F Nelson
F Waterstradt
C Benson

I didn't know that Oakland is in Division 1 for only their seventh season. A thing that's scary about college sports is that there can be two teams that NEVER played each other in history. Think of when Texas and Michigan tangled in a Rose Bowl one year. Think about when Texas and Ohio State (who I believe never met) played. You get some first-time matches that's really unique to college basketball. Anyhow, game time. Boston's Sean McDonough was joined along with New Jersey's (and one of FoolKiller's least favorite announcers- Big East Hall of Famer Bill Raftery.

Oakland had a game plan- jack up two threes just to show Oregon who they messing with. They led 6-2 in the first few minutes. The Oakland run was stopped by Oregon. I'm sure Oakland know what they signed up for. Oakland doesn't have a football program, but they have a football mentality in this game in the case of "hit 'em in the mouth." Oregon led 11-9 with about 15:47 left in the first half as Oakland called timeout. Oakland was stuck at nine until the Golden Grizzlies cashed in a golden three to move the score to a 12-12 deadlock. I'll tell you what. If Oakland knocks off Oregon, this is going to give the tournament committee something to look at on Selection Sunday in March. I still think Oakland needs to beat IUPUI, North Dakota State, but especially Oral Roberts. They don't get past ORU, they may not see the postseason. Oakland gets their first bucket in the paint at around 9:17 left in the First Half. It was 17-12 at this point. Oakland was playing like this was their National Championship campaign. Almost like Oakland was Virginia Commonwealth going up against a Duke in Oregon (reference to last season's March Madness). The bank was open in Detroit as Oakland was just cashing in threes. I'm sure Oregon will need better perimeter defense if this is a reoccuring theme. Keep in mind that Oregon lost earlier in the season at St. Mary's College. St. Mary's lowered the boom on Oregon as they were upstaged by the Gaels. Oakland was upstaging Oregon by 11 at the Half. The Golden Grizzlies led by as many as 12 or even 15 at one point. Detroit is credited as the birthplace of techno, and Oakland seemed anything but off-beat playing not too far from Oakland University. I think Oakland was leading 64-60 with about 1:50 left in the game. Oakland beats their first ranked team in school history. Oakland seemed to have the answer all game long. BIG win for Oakland. It gives the Tourney Selection Committee something to think about come March. How do they party up there in Southeast Michigan, Joey D? (68-62; Oakland) *** upset! and big win ***

OFF-TOPIC
I briefly heard Oakland's fight song. What I have around my computer is a cable adapter usually used to connect MP3 players to stereos. What I've done was hook up this adapter to one of my computer audio slots, then hook the red and white connectors to my Dish receiver. The end result is the ability to hear what's on my receiver clearly. Anyhow, the fight song doesn't seem all that bad.

DID YOU KNOW...
...that The Palace of Auburn Hills is about a 10-minute drive from Oakland University? I know Oakland is in Rochester, MI; but I never figured how close Oakland is to greater Detroit. Rochester, MI must be a suburb of Detroit.

Among other scores, here's a quick overview of who won (some reports with no scores to give out):

* The big match between #4 Georgetown and #2 Memphis saw John Calipari's team edge out Georgetown at home.

* Texas tastes defeat for the first time as Michigan State pulls a huge win.

* #24 Xavier's fall from grace continues as #12(?) Tennessee knocks them off on the road.

* Louisville took down New Mexico State at home 70-65.

* West Virginia's Bob Huggins should get a pat on the back for 600 wins. WVU got it done.

* Mississippi isn't the sorriest men's basketball team in the SEC (Auburn is the bottomfeeder), but they stay unbeaten with a win over Clemson in San Juan, Puerto Rico

* Because Ohio State couldn't do it in last season's National Championship game, the Buckeyes thought Florida was easy pickin's. They got all the revenge they needed. I heard that Florida was bricking several successive 3-point shots.

If I don't come back to wish you ahead of time, I'd like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Godspeed.

I want to hope all of you a happy and safe Christmas. If you're a college basketball fan who loves a good sports game, perhaps your ticket was College Hoops 2K8. I got it for Christmas (actually, I bought it myself and opened it ONLY on Christmas) for my PlayStation 2. The game doesn't look much different. The broadcast tandem of Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery are still there. Instead of Bonnie Bernstein's sideline reports, they now go to Tracy Wolfson for commentary. One of the big selling points of last year's game was the inclusion of actual coaches. They are all nonexistant now. Can you tell Phil Marteli from Tubby Smith? Joe Crean from Tom Penders? Billy Donovan from Jay Wright?

The game features about some... 201 fight songs compared to the 80 in CH 2K7. The HUD now reflects stuff like how many fouls a player and a team have, who scored the basket and how many points... much more improved. Even more improved? You can actually color up your own uniforms now! No more generic uniforms for User-Created Teams. I still have my team, the Marina Dragons. Actually, I'm torn between Dragons and Stars. You can hear all kinds of fight songs ranging from Oakland to San Francisco to Marquette to Tennessee and more. Everything seems to be really improved. Some teams even have new logos as seen in the game. You also get some new teams. So you get these newcomers:

* Florida Gulf Coast University
* South Carolina Upstate
* California State-Bakersfield

You also get some more arenas to unlock. As a Houston boy, I HAVE to unlock a Houston arena first. You still sadly get Reliant Stadium even though we have a BEAUTIFUL basketball arena called the Toyota Center- the home of the 2011 Men's Final Four. I'm a little surprised you don't get teams like Houston Baptist University and Seattle University- two schools looking to return to Division 1 basketball. I'm not sure if you can play as Alaska-Anchorage
There is also the "Sixth Man" feature which is similar to the Toughest Places to Play in the EA Sports games. Get this game now if you love college basketball.

As an off-topic deal, it seems like the College Hoops 2K series could be sponsored by CBS Sports. Consider Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Tracy Wolfson, and Greg Gumbel. This series has been sponsored by a TV network before. Remember ESPN College Hoops? Imagine a future game in this series called something like "NCAA on CBS 2K9" or something like that.

Again, great game if you're a college basketball fan. Go get it!

Coach Kampe said it was the biggest win of his career! We are still celebrating it and we are having something when school resumes.

None of us know the fight song, I mean we know the tune but we don't know the words or anything. I guess because we don't have a football team all other sports get pushed to the way side. I'm trying to learn it.

I can see the Palace from my house since it's only right down the road, it sucks on nights when there is a Pistons game because traffic is awful. Rochester is a suburb of Detroit, we are about 30 miles from the heart of the city.

Thanks for the clarification, Joey D. If Oakland somehow makes this season's NCAA Tournament in March, how far do you think they can go in the tournament? Can you imagine what seed they would be?

They would probably be either 15th or 16th seed and not make it any further then the first round, they are good but they don't have the same caliber of players as some of the larger schools.

There was a note I forgot to mention from yesterday. Eddie Sutton is the new interim head coach of the University of San Francisco. The Jesuit university of San Francisco has had fame before in the past as Bill Russell was leading the Dons to victory. This is a good fit for San Francisco as Eddie Sutton is an amazing coach.

One extra note about "College Hoops 2K8." There are now more believeable fight songs to each school. However, some of them are other schools' songs. You have to really know your schools to know what fight song goes with what school. I'll still be playing around with this game to see what else is available or improved.

Can we start a pool for how long it will be before he resigns due to a DUI?

The man is a good coach, but he has some personal issues that he seems to be better known for. More Kentucky fans remember him for having to resign due to a recruiting scandal and alcohol and drug use more than they remember him taking the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 1986.
