This is the first month of the new season of college basketball. Now please remember that during college football time or if I'm able to make a few updates, my contributions will be limited until about the end of the BCS National Championship game. Then I'll be here full-time to talk college basketball.

I always stress that these are your threads. So please contribute scores and college hoops talk whenever you can about whatever you like. The road to March begins this month. So reply on to kick off the new season.

The Wildcats got off to an early start last night against Pikeville College, an NAIA team. Final score 99-64 KENTUCKY!!!!

With 99 points and a nearly 62% field goal percentage Coach Billy Gillespie said that he thinks our offense could do better. :eek: I like the way he thinks.

And in other less important news Louisville won their first exhibition game last night as well against Georgetown College (from Kentucky not Georgetown University) 93-66

You know, I was thinking about Louisville almost losing to Georgetown College last season when I heard of a game that took place on Friday. Division 2's Grand Valley State pulled a Chaminade in beating #8 Michigan State at Michigan State. It was just an exhibition game that went into Double Overtime, but Grand Valley State knocked off the 2000 National Champions. Easy wins? Not if you don't win so easily. Nothing's easy. Even if Duke and North Carolina or Louisville and Kentucky went at it in exhibition like some NFL Preseason games.

So yeah. BIG upset. What if that was a regular season game and Michigan State prove to be true busts in the Big Ten after the GVSU loss?

Again, limited contributions. So feel free to cover for me. I'll make the threads. You make the comments (along with some of my own). By the way, Grand Valley State won 85-82 in Double Overtime.

FoolKiller, I'm sorry I didn't have a preview for you earlier. Now, here is your schedule. Any comments I have will be shown with this: "<<<". So here's the schedule:

*** March 2008 ***
2 - @ Tennessee^
5 - @ South Carolina
9 - Florida <<< if Kentucky loses at Florida, this game will give Kentucky a GREAT advantage

My Overview:
Kentucky plays all football schools. I predict that Kentucky will make the SEC Tournament. It's somewhat possible Kentucky could win, but some of the better East and West SEC schools will impede Kentucky's path. I'm thinking Kentucky will be Sweet Sixteen or higher in the Big Dance.

If I mention Kentucky, I HAVE to mention Louisville. So here you go:

2007-08 Louisville Schedule:

*** November 2007 ***
17 - Hartford <<< could be an easy win
18 - Jackson State <<< REAL easy win
21 - @ Nevada-Las Vegas <<< I'm not sure about this one for Louisville; 1990 National Champions beating Duke
23 - Brigham Young

*** December 2007 ***
1 - Miami University <<< not as good in basketball as they are in football
8 - Dayton <<< Dayton may be a trap game even if this is at home

18 - Marshall <<< Louisville would be dumb to lose this game
22 - New Mexico State <<< again, Louisville would be idiots to lose this game
26 - Morehead State <<< a Kentucky school; should be an easy win
29 - Iona <<< won only one game(?) last season

*** January 2008 ***
1 - Cincinnati^ <<< HAPPY NEW YEAR! Celebrate in Louisville against a former National Champion
5 - Kentucky! <<< a win by Louisville will mean inside track on an NCAA Tournament bid
10 - West Virginia^

17 - Marquette^ <<< this Milwaukee-based Jesuit Catholic school could stun the Cards at Freedom Hall
19 - @ Seton Hall^
23 - @ South Florida^ <<< pathetic in hoops

28 - @ Connecticut^ <<< Louisville's in trouble when they get to Hartford; Hartford U. will be easy, UConn will not

*** February 2008 ***
2 - Rutgers^
4 - @ Marquette^ <<< I don't like Louisville's chances in Milwaukee
9 - Georgetown^ <<< they want to return to postseason, and willing to take Louisville down
12 - @ DePaul^ <<< Chicago Jesuit school; middle-of-the-road program
16 - @ Providence^ <<< Providence College is also middle-of-the-road with this religious school
18 - Syracuse^ <<< Louisville might win this one, but may not be so easy
24 - @ Pittsburgh
28 - Notre Dame <<< is Notre Dame a true team?

*** March 2008 ***
2 - Villanova^ <<< pick your poison: round one of two
8 - @ Georgetown^ <<< pick your poison: round two of two

My Overview:
I don't know about Louisville this season. The first real challenge may actually be when they head out to UNLV. I think that this game at the Thomas and Mack Center could be a trap game for the Cardinals. Much like the Red River Shootout to Texas and Oklahoma, Louisville's season may depend on if they can beat Kentucky. It may be a tough go for the Louisville Cardinals. At best, I see them in the NIT. Maybe even win the NIT. But if they make the NCAA tournament, they won't last very long.

Here are the Kentucky boys. You told me to keep an eye on Joe Crawford, and he can really work the hardwood. Let me know if there's a Wildcat to look out for this season:

* #3 Ramel Bradley - G 6-2; 199 lbs. - Senior
* #43 Jared Carter - C 7-2; 250 lbs. - Junior
* #42 Mark Coury - F 6-8; 230 - Sophomore
* #32 Joe Crawford - G 6-5; 221 lbs. Senior
* #34 Ramon Harris - F 6-7; 216 lbs. - Sophomore
* #5 Derrick Jasper - G 6-6; 213 lbs. - Sophomore
* #1 Alex Legion - G 6-5; 196 lbs. - Freshman
* #23 Jodie Meeks - G 6-4; 212 - Sophomore
* #54 Patrick Patterson - F 6-9; 219 lbs. - Freshman
* #13 Michael Porter - G 6-2; 193 lbs. - Sophomore
* #21 Perry Stevenson - F 6-9; 192 lbs - Sophomore
* #15 A.J. Stewart - F 6-8; 208 lbs. - Freshman
* #25 Morakinyo Williams - C 6-11; 270 lbs. - Freshman

Remember I said last season that my concern for Kentucky was this season because Kentucky had a good number of Juniors and Seniors. Perhaps Kentucky can make that push for their eighth National Championship. There's your Wildcats' review!

It is hard to make any judgments for Kentucky this year because they are a young, but very talented, team. They also have a new coach in Coach Billy Gillispie. He's anal about this so I will clarify the pronunciation now: Guh-liss-pee.

Anyway, as for players to watch I was going to say Derrick Jasper. He is a leader and while he doesn't put up huge points he does average over 100 assists. However, it is hard to watch a guy on the bench in a red shirt. He had knee surgery and there is still a debate about whether to keep him active so he can play come January or just red shirt him so he has a chance to start fresh next year and full rehabilitated without wasting the year. My fear is that if he comes back this year he will wind up like Jared Carter who didn't redshirt when he initially hurt his shoulder and when he came back immediately injured it again to get red shirted then. Now he might be a wasted scholarship as he psychologically is afraid to use that arm at all. I don't want to see Jasper's prospects wasted on an injury that can haunt him and ruin his career.

So, since Jasper might be a red shirt this year I turn to see who else is looking good this year. Meeks always looks good, Stevenson is looking nice, and then the freshman we were all waiting for, Patterson. There was huge talk about him and we were afraid we would lose him when Tubby left but Coach Gillispie has proven to be an awesome recruiter and after just one meeting Patterson went from considering Kentucky with Tubby to signing with Kentucky, upsetting Duke and Florida who both had bids on him. A freshman putting up double-digit points is an amazing thing to see and he loves the crowd as he start pumping them up and feeding off the energy. I have a feeling he will go pro, unfortunately it will be sooner than later.

So, the main guy to watch is Patterson but pay attention to Meeks and Stevenson too. With so much talent leaving last year this is the year for these guys to step up.

Okay. I'll be sure to take a look at how the Wildcats do. I now want to ask how you feel about this team and the upcoming season. Do you think Kentucky's heading to the NCAA Tournament? If so, how high up in the tournament do you think they will go?

While you're thinking about that, here are some scores from the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN:

* The Memphis Tigers clobbered the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks 102-71.
* Richmond's Spiders barely survived the wrath of the Maine Black Bears 44-42.

That's one way I'll cover exhibition tournaments. Rather than full-blown results, I'll simply talk about who beat who in an elaborate little sentence or two. I may even put the winning team in bold and display in blue.

The coverage was on ESPNU. By the way, did you notice the "College Hoops 2K8" commercials? I liked that one about Greg Oden actually being younger than he looks. Greg Oden is likely going to miss a lot of time in the NBA, maybe even done for the season. I still can't wait to play the 2K8 game. I've been fully convinced about the 2K series since playing "College Hoops 2K6" over "NCAA March Madness 2005." Just all the sheer execution as well as better immersion makes this leagues better than the March Madness series. You all with the next-gen systems will likely pick up a better package than the current-gen systems. It should be a great Christmas gift for you college basketball fans.

Okay. I'll be sure to take a look at how the Wildcats do. I now want to ask how you feel about this team and the upcoming season. Do you think Kentucky's heading to the NCAA Tournament? If so, how high up in the tournament do you think they will go?
Yes, Kentucky will make the tournament. If not Gillispie will be in a for a lot of trouble. If you want to see a lynch mob in Lexington that would be the way to do it.

As for where they will go in the tournament: Sweet 16 at best this year. New coach and a young team, I will honestly be surprised if they break through the second round.

Honestly my true judgements will have to be after the Coaches vs Cancer tournament they are in. Currently they are playing at home, but when they get to New York it looks like the first team they will play is Connecticut. Can you fake a fair catch in basketball? And if they win that one they will most likely be up against Memphis or Oklahoma. So, this will be a good showing of their abilities early on.

That is what I like about Kentucky basketball. They are not afraid to take on talented teams early in the season, even though the SEC is a tough conference.

I'm looking forward to the Oakland University basketball season, which kicked off last night with an exhibition match against Windsor, in which we won 115-94. We are actually playing some pretty good teams this year and I'm excited that a few of them are at home, which means I get to see the game free of charge.

I'm looking forward to the Oral Roberts game, which should be pretty good. We are also playing Michigan State, which I might make the trek to East Lansing for the game.

Here is the schedule:
http://www.ougrizzlies.com/menssports/basketball/2007-08MBBSchedule.html

I'm hoping for another good season from the Grizzlies.

WOOHOO!!!! I just got tickets to tonight's UK game. My father-in-law works in government and a lot of these politicians will offer him season tickets that they can't use. Last time I got tickets from him I was on the sixth row.

And all this time I didn't think I would be able to catch the game because it is being shown on ESPNU.

It's that hard for you to get tickets? Hmm maybe basket ball just isn't overly popular at my school, I can more or less show up 15 minutes before tip off, flash my student ID, and walk right in.

People... I will be using the Sporting News' 2007-08 College Basketball Preview issue to follow schedules. Per the request of Joey D, I'll talk Golden Grizzlies.

--- My Overview ---
The only team I usually know is Oral Roberts. For Oakland to succeed in the Summit League, Oral Roberts, IUPUI, and maybe even North Dakota State will be their key targets to take down. Oakland will have to do a whole lot to win the support of the tournament selection committee in March. You do remember they made the Play-In game as Oakland took on Alabama A&M and lost the Play-In Game. Their chances of making the tournament is pretty unlikely. If they DO make the tournament, I predict they will either be a #16 or a #15 in the division they enter. The longshot is that they beat Oral Roberts three times- at home, on the road, and in the Summit League conference championship game. And at best, they may be a #12 seed.

The Sporting News' preview on the labeled "Low Major" Summit League has Oakland #4 in the nation. They are #4 with Oral Roberts, IUPUI, and North Dakota State ahead of them. I'm not counting Oakland out (in fact, the preview said that Oakland almost beat Oral Roberts in the championship game). They can make some magic even after this Southeastern Michigan school finished 19-14 last season.

Coaches vs. Cancer Classic
* You doubted Kentucky under the rule of Billy Gillespie. Well even though their opponents were cupcakes, the Kentucky Wildcats put up 27 points on Central Arkansas' Bearcats 67-40. Everything's bigger in Texas... even beatdowns. So you may have something there in Lexington with Gillespie. And don't worry. He's been here in Texas, so I know how to pronounce his last name pretty well, FoolKiller. Just that you Kentucky folk will have to get used to Gillespie. Thing I'd fear is if the Wildcat fans will run Gillespie out of town like they did with Tubby Smith. * Richmond and Memphis went at it in a possible upset deal.

--- John's Student Lounge ---
EXTRA: New Kids on the Division 1 Hardwood
Here are your Division 1 newcomers:

* California State University-Bakersfield {Roadrunners; Bakersfield, CA}
* Presbyterian {Blue Hose; Clinton, SC}
* North Carolina Central
* Seattle
* South Carolina Upstate
* Florida Gulf Coast

I know a little more about Presbyterian College than California State-Bakersfield. Presbyterian is a football school. You may have seen some of my Presbyterian results in my college football threads. * As for California State-Bakersfield, they bear the same nickname of my elementary school- the Roadrunners (I'm a proud Roadrunner of Mading Elementary here in Houston). CSU-Bakersfield did pretty well against teams from the Big West and the West Coast Conference. The Big West seems logical since there are other California and California State schools in the Big West Conference. There are just about 6 California or California State schools in the Big West. California State-Bakersfield would make it seven. Only two Big West schools are not in California: Utah State and Idaho. * North Carolina Central is the first historically-black school to be an Independent since Winstom-Salem State joined D1 as an independent. The Eagles have a great football team. I wonder if their basketball has enough spunk to last in D1. * Seattle University was part of Division 1, but basically plays in Division 2. This school would fit RIGHT in with the West Coast Conference. The West Coast Conference mostly consists of major West Coast cities with private religious schools. Seattle is one of them. I believe it's a Jesuit school. They are home of the Seattle Redhawks. * Most of the other schools I mentioned are those I don't know. I may look at them in the future.

EXTRA: John Honors the Kentucky Cancer Center
A commercial aired during the commercial breaks talking about the University of Kentucky's efforts to help treat (or at least cure) rare cancers. I usually think of Louisville in regards to prominent health care. But if UK's medical department can help treat rare cancer, they've earned my respect. It's a good deal by the University of Kentucky in keeping with the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

OFF-TOPIC
Billy Gillespie donned maroon in his days at Texas A&M. Looks pretty nice in Kentucky blue. Getting down the style already. Most U of K people would usually say that everything looks better in Kentucky blue. Of course, I like the blue colors to both Kentucky and Duke. Speaking of these two schools...

EXTRA: My Thoughts on the Duke/Kentucky Match in 1992
Christian Laettner stomps on a Kentucky player and gets a Technical Foul. He'd later be the one to send Kentucky home sad. I think Laettner should have been ejected. It's because you don't stomp on a guy when on the ground. Even more so, he ends up being the HERO of Duke after playing a VILLAIN to Kentucky. I can't think of any real figure in literature that was evil to another party while ending up a hero for his own party. How he wasn't ejected after ending up being the hero... at some point, Duke and Kentucky are going to have to meet again. That's even if Kentucky joins the ACC or Duke joins the SEC. I'm sure FoolKiller hopes this rematch of about 15 or so years is played at Rupp Arena to provide an evil awakening towards Duke. Could it happen? I don't think Duke even wants to take on Kentucky ever again unless in the playoffs.

As an off-topic note, I noticed that there was a 45-second shot clock. Can you imagine hogging the ball that long? I'm sure they greatly changed it so that games can be sped up.

Dick Vitale's Final Four (this early in the season)
North Carolina - Memphis - UCLA - Louisville... North Carolina champion

Imagine the 'Ville getting into the Final Four. Louisville knows what being part of the Final Four is like having been to 8 Final Fours and winning two championships. And is it possible that Dick Vitale. a Duke grad, picks North Carolina to win it all?

Limited contributions. Still, I'll key in when I'd like to. By the way, Memphis beat Richmond in almost a blowout. I rate games as blowouts as margins of victory of about 15 or more points. Same goes for football.

It's that hard for you to get tickets? Hmm maybe basket ball just isn't overly popular at my school, I can more or less show up 15 minutes before tip off, flash my student ID, and walk right in.
Wow, even when I was at Western Kentucky I still had to pay $5.

At the University of Kentucky basketball is king, a religion, pick your analogy. Nothing, and I mean nothing, comes before basketball. It was not uncommon for night classes to be skipped on basketball nights.

Student tickets are done in a lottery style a week before they go on sale to the public, then in the in-between time the alumni association members get first pick, then they go on sale to the public.

How hard is it to get tickets? For Big Blue Madness, which is just our celebratory first practice that fans are allowed to attend for free, people camp out on Wednesday for Saturday ticket sales. They would camp out earlier but the university won't allow them to. Then we sell out Rupp Arena (rated for 24,000 although we can squeeze in 27,000) in less than a day.

And if you want season tickets when you have the time and money for them get in line now. They just increased the number by 4,000 this year and there is still a multi-year waiting list (rumor is 20 years). When a person dies their next of kin get first offer for those tickets, so a family can hold on to season tickets indefinitely.

So, yes, it is hard to get tickets. Oh and we nearly sell out our 65,000 seat football stadium every week, even when we have a 3-9 record.

Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

First, is it spelled Gillespie or Gillispie? I keep seeing it both ways. I am currently running with the ukathletics.com spelling of Gillispie, but that easily be wrong too. Oh well, on to my game coverage.

Woohoo! I made it to the official season opener. Patterson got into early foul trouble and part of his issue is that he is talented and he knows it too well. He acts cocky and I am afraid that when we play a good team (Memphis perhaps in the CvC tournament final?) he will learn his place. Coury, so he got a double-double, but he looked sloppy to me. He isn't afraid to try, but he needs some refinement and to think before getting himself into a trap. Joe Crawford sat for the first 24 minutes of the game and then got the highest score on the team. Not being 100% after an injury has kept him from earning a start in practice, but I think he showed that he doesn't need to be 100% to show that he is still top dog.

The rest of the team looked good but Gillispie is still working on it. They don't mesh perfectly yet and they are trying out a lot of different things.

The sixth man: This is the first time I have been in Rupp since they put in the eRUPPtion Zone, which is a section behind the right (on TV) goal. This is filled with members of the Student Athletic Committee (SAC). It is like the group in the movie Rudy that painted the helmets. These students pay to be a member, get new shirts every game, help take tickets, lay out the 3s on all the seats, and get as rowdy as can be during the games to get the crowd motivated. The band is also in this section. I immediately saw their efforts when Central Arkansas' starting lineup was being announced. The entire section turned their backs and then yelled comments like, "loser" and "nobody" when they called the names.

Officiating: What are these refs smoking? At one point it was so bad that Gillispie called a timeout and motioned for the ref that had made nearly all the bad calls to come talk to him. He spent the entire timeout talking to the ref. The crowd went insane. I believe that this is the point when I decided I really like our new coach. Then the poor ref made the mistake of standing under the goal directly in front of the eRUPPtion Zone for the last bit before play started back up. Needless to say they were a bit hostile.

So, aside form bad calls, which were constantly replayed on the screens so we could all see it was bad and let them know, it was a good game that showed we still have work. The coaching staff and players are still working together to find the best fit and the best strategies, but it was good to see Gillispie working on it instead of playing out a plan and then making adjustments once for the next game. I've seen that and by the time the coach finds what works best it is nearly January.

This was built while I was a student and so they are just now beginning to turn out some good results. They always had a cancer center, but they were just a section in the hospital. Now they have their own building attached to the hospital where they do research and work toward finding cures and whatnot.

In honor of TMQ I will call this my buck-buck brawk!!! section.

Why did you mention that game? That shot is forever burned into my brain and now I can see it as clear as day.

Now for the buck-buck-brawk!!!
As for a rematch....ever since this game Kentucky has tried to get a regularly scheduled game with Duke. Every year Coach K has said no. Why? We play North Carolina every year. We enter these charity tournaments where we commonly have one or two ranked teams to face. Kentucky only turns down regular games against small teams that refuse to come to Lexington every year, because Kentucky knows a small venue will lead to some ugliness when you can barely get 8,000 people in. We have a large fan base that travels with the team and a small venue will not work. But we are willing to go back and forth with Duke. We WANT to take on Duke. We WANT to get a shot at them every single year. We WANT to wipe the smirk off their faces when not even a last minute miracle shot can save them. We WANT the rest of the basketball world to know that we will never forget or forgive. Duke and Coach K want to hide and keep that pure luck shot on every highlight reel from here to eternity. They want to cushion their schedule with teams like Eastern Kentucky University. Coach K can just do his little chicken dance. We all know who the better team really is.

If Dick Vitale says it, BABY, then it is most likely wrong. Sorry, he annoys me too much for me to truly accept that he does know basketball, even if he is a Duke fanboy.

EDIT: I nearly forgot - College Hoops 2k8 (sponsor of the CvC tournament) will have a recreation of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in the game.

Well, I mentioned the Duke/Kentucky game of 1992 because I never had a chance to actually talk about the game and offer my comments. I respect ESPN for being "the worldwide leader in sports." However, they have a knack of showing some teams getting beat. They ALWAYS rip my Texans, Astros, and even sometimes, the Houston Cougars. It's why I usually say that there's a jinxing effect when games are played on ESPN or ABC. I never had the chance to talk about the Duke/Kentucky game before. And I did it just now.

I don't have a Final Four myself. I'd like to try to make a Final Four with a surprise team. There are over 320+ teams eligible to play for the championship. Only 65 are entered as it dwindles down to four, then two, then a champ. There are some gems out there to determine who may not be as good as the high major teams, but can put up quite a fight. Here are some favorites that I'd like to see advance to the tournament:

--- My Men's Favorites to Advance to March Madness ---
* Winthrop - This team is good, but I'm not sure if these Eagles from South Carolina can be good enough to make a magical run through the tournament. They seem to win a game, but don't really make the Sweet Sixteen.

* Marquette - Ring Out Ahoya! Marquette and Wisconsin are the two best basketball teams in Dairy Country. Marquette won the championship back in 1977. This is going to be a team to watch in the Big East. But with teams like Georgetown, Villanova, and others playing for the same real estate, is this Golden Eagles team for real?

* Creighton, Missouri State, and Southern Illinois - I HAVE to mention the Missouri Valley here. Mock the Missouri Valley conference because they aren't a "BCS" conference. However, this is perhaps the conference of sleepers. I usually say that Southern Illinois may be the best basketball team in the Missouri Valley conference. I'd feel a bit dumb for not adding Wichita State to the list. Creighton University is the Jesuit university of Omaha. This Nebraska school has been pretty good themselves. I don't regard them high enough, but they can flat out play. Finally, I respect Missouri State. The Bears know how to bear down on their opponents when things get rough.

* Western Kentucky - That's right. The Hilltoppers of Bowling Green, KY are one of the most successful teams in men's college basketball. Maybe today's team doesn't have the services of E.A. Diddle, but they can still work the hardwood quite well. Their competition in conference is going to be against South Alabama. I'd say Denver, but the Pioneers haven't had a real good season last season.

* Texas A&M-Corpus Christi - I have the Islanders returning to the tournament, but it will be tough without head coach Ronnie Arrow and a lot of the people who helped make TAMU-CC a winner last season. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is going to win some playoff rounds, guaranteed.

* Gonzaga - I know Gonzaga's going to make a tournament. May even win the WCC conference. This Spokane, WA school knows how to put up a fight. I see them advancing for their chance to play in San Antonio.

These are some of my favorites. I'll note some more later. Perhaps even share some women's picks.

Awesome write up on my Golden Grizzlies John 👍! I'd rep you if I could.

I'm hoping for great things this year and even though I am a die hard Michigan football fan I will always cheer on my home school. I can't wait for the Oral Roberts game!

It was 15:51 left in the FIRST HALF, and Kentucky was sleeping against Gardner-Webb in a 14-0 shutout. This almost reminded me of last season's postseason when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was leading Wisconsin in a shutout early... until Wisconsin came back to win. Thing is, Kentucky lost this match in a beating. Gardner-Webb's season may well be defined clearly right about now. I didn't see all of this game, but I don't think Kentucky led at ANY point from what I've seen. FoolKiller... what happened here? Billy G. (if I may nickname him that) will have to hope a performance like this doesn't come back to haunt Kentucky when the season starts getting more interesting and when they start playing against better teams... like Louisville and North Carolina (who Kentucky hosts this year). No... let me re-state the question... what the HELL happened at Rupp Arena Wednesday night? (84-68; Gardner-Webb)

I don't have ESPNU, so I didn't get to see this, but I have heard all I need to know. Gillispie is taking too long getting this team together. He repeatedly says that he is still trying to find their fit. Well, time's up and he is still rotating guys in and out every 30 seconds. I give him until December before I begin making judgements, but thsi does not look good.

In Kentucky the fans do not want to give you a couple of years to get your stuff together. We want a coach that will come ina nd win a championship their firts year.

Oh wait.......he just left town.

So do you think Bill G. is on the chopping block after this performance? I think Kentucky will bounce back. This loss to Gardner-Webb reminds me of (and I hate to infuriate Joey D) a football version of Appalachian State's win over Michigan. Michigan would go on to do nothing but win after the Notre Dame game. I've held faith in football for Kentucky, and basketball will be no different. I think you should reserve your judgment of Gillespie(?) until SEC play starts. It's because conference play really defines what your team is made of. Sure you have Louisville and North Carolina, but that's nothing (no disrespect to either team) compared to taking on teams like LSU, Tennessee, Mississippi State, and teams like that. I'd even put Alabama up for mention.

It's too early at this point. The thing with playing for storied programs is that there seems to be some sort of "we need to keep winning, and we need to win every championship every year." I don't really think UCLA has that kind of mindset. After all, UCLA has won four more national championships than Kentucky. I don't really hear of UCLA feeling down in the dumps because they can't find quality talent all the time. Even today's UCLA squad is a good team, even without the services of the legendary John Wooden. Kentucky is still a great school even without the legendary Adolph Rupp.

I'll use this space to talk about the upcoming College Hoops 2K8 for multiple platforms. I still have a PS2. What I've seen from PS2 renders and in-screen shots is that this game will have a graphical overhaul. Compare the models from CH 2K8 from 2K7 and 2K6. Looks a lot more clearer. There are still a lot of the obvious jagged edges with the graphics, but should still be an amazing product when released in stores. My concern will be if there will be more slowdowns with a graphics overhaul. Take NCAA Football 2005 for the PS2. Looks graphically impressive, but slows down quite a bit. Only nine screens are available for College Hoops 2K8 for the PS3. The following links show you this amazing college basketball series for different systems. Find your favorite:

Just the fact you can do so much more with this game than with the March Madness series makes this a great buy for the Holiday season. I even enjoyed looking for some international prospects. I didn't go through the Career/Season modes too much, though. Let me introduce you to my User-Created team in the game:

Sure love to play College Hoops 2K8 to see what's improved. Maybe I'll even learn a few more fight songs. I'd like to hear as many as I can. Maybe George Mason, San Francisco, Portland, Murray State, more historically-black schools... you know, more mid-majors. You can learn more about College Hoops 2K8 by checking out the official website:

http://2ksports.com/games/choops2k8/

You can even go to their message boards. I participate on there. I am "John M." on their message boards. Have a great day, everyone!

So do you think Bill G. is on the chopping block after this performance?
With the school? No. With the fans? Of course. I mean, they ran Tubby out of town for not making a Final Four appearance recently and losing five or six games regularly (OH NOES!) He has been welcomed like a prince, but now he will see the ugly side of the fans.

I think Kentucky will bounce back.
I think so too and that is why I am giving Gillispie some time, but he needs to work things out sooner, not later. I know it is still early, but from reading game reports (because I didn't see the game) it doesn't look like he attempted any adjustments. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

I'll use this space to talk about the upcoming College Hoops 2K8 for multiple platforms.
I heard that CH2k8 wil have classic teams. Do you know if it will have Rupp's "Fabulous Five"? I can't imagine them not including the team that won the championship and the Olympics in 1948. I also have the 1966 Rupp's Runts in mind, or even the team that upset them in the championship game, Texas Western.

I'm sharing my thoughts in regards to seperate conferences of the Big East. There's been talk that the Big East could break up into two conferences in basketball. One can be for traditional Big East teams while another can be for basketball teams only. St. John's, Providence, Marquette, and DePaul make up the non-football schools in the Big East. I think they would need a few extra schools to make this conference work. I've been hearing of plans to include schools like Xavier and maybe Dayton. I'm not sure how the Big East would handle this superconference they have at present.

Wow, they are making a ton of changes. I just heard that they were going to start letting every team into the conference tournament in 2009 (basketball of course).

Actually, this is very old news. Sixteen teams will all be invited to play for the Big East crown starting in 2009 on both sides. We seen conference realignment back in 2005 or so when Louisville and South Florida left Conference USA for the Big East among others. So down the road, I'm interested in how things all shape out.

I have a report on the way, and I'll do so in my next post.

A lot of teams started their 2007-2008 campaign today and tonight. Again, I'll make limited contributions.

Houston's taking on Morehead State. They haven't been in the tournament since 1992. My hope is that Houston one day returns to the Dance. Whether if it's an at-large bid or winning Conference USA, I'd LOVE to see a good Houston team make the dance. So allow me to introduce you all to my hometown's finest basketball team with their schedule.

Houston's 2007-08 Schedule

LEGEND:
@ = road game
! = rivalry game
^ = conference game
<<< my personal comments

--- November 2007 ---
9 - Morehead State
15 - @ Virginia Commonwealth <<< Houston lost to them last season, and may lose again this season
24 - Grambling State
26 - Coastal Carolina <<< the Chanticleers are a potent team out of the Big South. Not Winthrop, but great enough

--- December 2007 ---
1 - Middle Tennessee State <<< women's team is amazing, not so much the men's team
4 - Toledo
8 - Southern <<< my future sister-in-law's alma mater; winless for a long while last season
18 - Kentucky <<< my friendly rivalry with FoolKiller comes to a head here in H-Town

--- January 2007 ---
12 - Arizona <<< I believe we beat Arizona two years ago, first of two upsets as we'd beat LSU that same season
16 - @ Southern Methodist <<< pathetic in football, pathetic in basketball... but anything can happen
19 - Texas-El Paso <<< 1966 National Champs; "Glory Road," anyone?
23 - @ Rice! <<< I admit... Rice was great last season; may be a Rice upset with court upgrade in progress
26 - Marshall
30 - Memphis <<< Houston may FINALLY be able to beat Memphis this season (predicted by Sporting News)

--- February 2007 ---
2 - @ Central Florida
6 - Tulsa
9 - @ Tulane
13 - @ Memphis <<< not going to be easy to win there
16 - @ Southern Mississippi <<< lame ducks in Conference USA, not guaranteed.
20 - @ Alabama-Birmingham <<< a dangerous team in C-USA
23 - Rice! <<< schools seperated by less than five miles; Houston may have a huge edge
27 - Southern Mississippi

--- March 2007 ---
1 - Central Florida
8 - @ at Texas-El Paso <<< could be a shootout

My Overview
Houston will need to do a whole lot to give themselves a chance. A real boost for Houston is that the entire month of December is a home month for the Cougars. I think the Coogs will lose to Virginia Commonwealth and perhaps Coastal Carolina at home. This would make Houston 5-2 heading into two tough matches. Houston will try to exact revenge against Kentucky when they come to aging Hoffheinz Pavillion. Over 8,479 seats will be available to see Houston try to take down Kentucky. I don't think Houston will win this game. I'm predicting they make a game of it after being down, but the Wildcats may win by... let's say 5 or 7. Then, they have to face some more Wildcats. Instead of Lexington, the 'Cats from Tuscon. No disrespect to Kentucky, but Arizona's Wildcats should be a more talented team when they get to Houston. I'll be 25 on January 15th, so a Cougar win at Southern Methodist would make a great 25th belated birthday present. What will define Houston's season is how much fight they will have when they meet Memphis and even Rice. I'm predicting Houston will advance to the tournament, but only if they can beat Kentucky, Arizona, and Memphis (at least once). If they don't win those games, then they at least need to keep the game close. We don't have a 21st Century Phi Slamma Jamma here, but we need to build up our players to make a difference for when it matters most. Maybe winning some big games can help renovate the aging Hoffheinz Pavillion.

--- Other Games Played ---
Here is a rundown of score results... Big wins are in blue and include great wins or non-ranked wins over a higher opponent. Disappointing losses are noted in red and relate to embarassing efforts in games or would-have/could-have/should-have wins that slipping away. Upsets relate to lower-ranked or unranked teams beating a ranked team. I go by rankings rather than talent. So if Detroit was #15 as North Carolina was unranked, I'll note upsets by default. Finally, Ownages are in orange and relate to outright beatings of teams. I'm considering 30 or more as a threshold. I may start doing "Winners and Losers" at the end of each month as opposed to each week like in my football threads.

*** Men's Scores ***
Houston Baptist University will play themselves some games in Division 1. The Huskies are an NAIA school trying to return to Division 1. They don't have football, so they are the only Houston school that doesn't have football at present. Now let's see how they did in their trip to Pittsburgh.

* Houston Baptist {Huskies} at Pittsburgh {Panthers} (103-62; PITTSBURGH)

Let's continue on with more quick highlights. You may even see a stunner or two.

* Morehead State {Eagles} at Houston {Cougars} (83-54; HOUSTON)
* North Carolina-Greensboro {Spartans} at Georgia Tech (83-74; North Carolina-Greensboro)
* Lipscomb at Centenary (-; CENTENARY)
* Troy {Torjans} (84-72; ALABAMA)
* North Dakota State at Florida (75-65; FLORIDA)
* Texas Southern {Tigers} at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi {Islanders} (72-64; Texas Southern)
* Cleveland State {Vikings} at South Florida {Bulls} (73-70; Cleveland State)
* Radford {Highlanders} at Michigan {Wolverines} (82-55; MICHIGAN)
* Oakland at Wisconsin-Green Bay (76-75; WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY) <<< sorry, Joey D...
* DePaul at Creighton (74-62; CREIGHTON)

To save stress on me providing scores, I will make limited contributions until college football season is over. Then, you can expect to see more full-blown reports. I stress again to all you college basketball fans to key in and provide your own scores and stats if you like. I make the threads, but it's up to YOU to make these threads shine. So I'll provide limited commentary. You may even want to ask me some questions about the young season of college basketball. I appreciate the questions from the college football preview, so why not some questions for the new season? Thanks for reading.

I'm making limited contributions to my college basketball until college football is done for. So I want to talk about a few games that took place as well as my women's picks.

A Note on Division 2 and Lower
GTPlanet, I always say that I want to incorporate as many elements of college sports as possible. I made the effort in football to talk about teams in FCS and lower. I can't make too much of an effort in Division 2 and lower. So what I decided to do is almost completely avoid Division 2 talk unless something big happens (like when Barton beat Winona State and ended their 50+ game winning streak) or just limited contributions. Reason why I don't bring up Division 2 and 3 is because I don't really have a dependable source. On top of that, covering other divisions means MUCH more work covering men and women. So I decided to mostly do away with Divisions 2 and lower except for the playoffs.

--- Girls Can Play 'Ball Too! ---
Okay. Let me talk about women's basketball. It wouldn't mean too much for me to just talk men's hoops all the time. Here are some of my women's favorites to perhaps advance to the tournament (besides the usual suspects):

Wisconsin-Green Bay - I think the Lady Phoenix have had some great teams, I usually think Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a great men's team, but Wisconsin-Green Bay is a great women's team. The Lady Phoenix (as in UW-GB Phoenix) can be quite a potent team in the women's game.

DePaul - The Lady Blue Demons of the Big East's DePaul can be pretty tough cookies in basketball. I think they can do quite well and maybe make a run in the Sweet Sixteen

Louisiana Tech - The Lady Bulldogs are from the WAC conference. So obviously not a conference of powerful basketball teams. I have seen Louisiana Tech play before on television. Can the Lady Bulldogs make some noise for March?

Middle Tennessee State - MTSU were glad the Murfreesboro(?), Tennessee school advanced to the dance. I know Western Kentucky and and South Alabama as great Men's teams in the Sun Belt, but not too much in this one. Someone who used to go to my community college (never knew her) had on a T-shirt talking about the Sun Belt basketball tournament. She went to the University of Denver. I don't know about how Denver is in the Sun Belt, but I do know that this team can play ball.

Marist - The Lady Red Foxes of Poughkeepsie, New York are another team I've seen on TV before. Perhaps the Lady Red Foxes can make a run to get on the road to the Women's Final Four in Tampa Bay.

Louisville and Kentucky - Louisville and Kentucky aren't going to be great next-door neighbors. The Lady Cardinals of Louisville probably hate the Lady Wildcats of Kentucky about as much as... hell. ANY sports teams both schools compete in. The women hate each each other much like the men hate each other. But I think the Lady Cardinals have a great chance to make it to The Dance. Kentucky's ladies, however, I think they can do a great job. Will it be a job good enough that the Lady Wildcats can pack their bags and head on the road to Tampa Bay? Kentucky's run is going to be much worse than Louisville for three reasons- LSU, Georgia, and a school called... Tennessee. I don't think it's likely Kentucky's ladies will beat ANY of these three SEC schools at any time this season.

Those are the only real good women's teams that I know of as mid-majors or underrated schools that can make a difference come March on the [Women's] road to Tampa Bay.

The Men will be playing for a chance to play in San Antonio for this season of college hoops at the Alamodome. So I now just want to talk with some of the lovely people of GTPlanet.

* For FoolKiller... The schedule I have in my Sporting News preview has Liberty as the first team of the season. But as we seen, it was a rough go for Kentucky when Gardner-Webb came to town. Reading this college basketball preview, Kentucky has an amazing postseason resumé. They've been to the Big Dance 48 times, 13 Final Fours, and of course... seven titles. What do you think has to be done for the Wildcats to be successful this season?

I mentioned the postseason resumé for Kentucky. I'll give you UCLA's postseason resumé for comparison. UCLA has made 41 appearances to the Dance (may well make it 42 on Selection Sunday). They've made 17 Final Fours and the only thing Kentucky doesn't have over any other team- 11 National Championships.

* For Joey D... I know you vastly support Oakland in basketball. But, I want to ask you about Michigan. Do you think Michigan can put something together to perhaps be the best team in Big Ten Men's basketball, or at least be a sleeper?

I want you GTPlanet college basketball fans to get involved. I want to meet more people and learn more favorite teams. I know I can draw a crowd for college football. I want to do the same for college basketball. Will you help me accomplish what I'd like to accomplish for college basketball discussion?

Finally in my limited contributions, I'd like to apologize. I've been saying that Houston will host the Final Four for the 2010 season. Well, in early April 2011, Reliant Stadium (not Toyota Center, which I was hoping for) will host the men's Final Four. Here are some of the other host sites for the specific cities including Houston:

2007 Men's Final Four - San Antonio - Alamodome
2008 Men's Final Four - Detroit - Ford Field
2009 Men's Final Four - Indianapolis - Lucas Oil Stadium
2010 Men's Final Four - Houston - Reliant Stadium

...and for the women...

2007 Women's Final Four - Tampa Bay - St. Pete Time's Forum
2008 Women's Final Four - St. Louis - Scottrade Center
2009 Women's Final Four - San Antonio - Alamadome
2010 Women's Final Four - Indianapolis - Lucas Oil Stadium

Thanks for reading. Take care.

I don't know about Michigan basketball as I don't follow them all that closely, but from the little I do know I can see them being a contender this year in the Big Ten.

Gillispie just needs to get teh kinks worked out. Right nwo he is still playing with teh talent he has, untraining old guys from Tubby's system, and training new guys to get out of the high school mindset. Injuries aren't helping much either.

This will be a tough year, by Kentucky standards, but I think Gillispie will work things out. The last time Kentucky had a start this rough they won a championship.

I mentioned the postseason resumé for Kentucky. I'll give you UCLA's postseason resumé for comparison. UCLA has made 41 appearances to the Dance (may well make it 42 on Selection Sunday). :ouch: :grumpy:

Well, I'm sure Billy G. will get the kinks worked out. I still want you guys to have a great season over there in Lexington. I'm sure that Billy knows what kind of merit wearing [Kentucky] Wildcat blue as the head coach is about. If everything all comes together and every plays to win (like they usually do), Kentucky may not have to wait long to pick up National Championship #8.

I'm going to try to introduce "Old School" to my college basketball discussions. Something different I want to try is to explain formations in basketball. Kind of teaching the game the way I've learned. So here's a start for you:

Feature Formation: The 2-3 Zone
The way I've understood the 2-3 Zone was that you force the opposing team to take jumpshots. The 2-3 Zone is a very poweful defensive alignment. It's a really good formation for teams that can't drain the rock from outside the arc. You'll normally see two players guard around the free throw line. The other three defend both corners of the court with one player guarding the basketball rim. Playing the "NCAA March Madness" and "College Hoops 2K" series talks about how this formation forces jumpshots. I've seen this as the best alignment to take on teams who can't penetrate or shoot 3-pointers very well.

--- Men ---
* Saint Joseph's {Hawks} vs. #25 Syracuse! {Orange} (72-69; #25 SYRACUSE!) --- Preseason NIT Regional Final ---
* UMBC {Rretrivers} at La Salle {Explorers} (76-69; Maryland-Baltimore County)
* Illinois-Springfield at Illinois-Chicago (81-55; ILLINOIS-CHICAGO)
* American {Eagles} at Loyola College {Greyhounds} (71-67; LOYOLA COLLEGE)
* Wisconsin-Green Bay {Phoenix} at Delaware State {Hornets} (70-50; Wisconsin-Green Bay)

--- Women ---
* Fisk vs. Lipscomb (123-22; LIPSCOMB) --- unsure who was home team --- *** ownage ***

Allow me to do a profile for you. Get to know a little more about Saint Joseph's.

John's Profile School: Saint Joseph's University
Saint Joseph's University is one of over six different universities in the greater Philadelphia area. Saint Joseph's (or more commonly known as St. Joe's) is not a football school, but they do love their basketball. There's a winning tradition of men's basketball. Part of that winning tradition is with the awesome coach Phil Martelli. Saint Joseph's is one of over 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. The school mascot is the Hawk. The coaches' show is known as "Hawk Talk with Phil Martelli." It's a very entertaining show when I seen it on CSTV. You can hear their fight song in "College Hoops 2K7." It's the same fight song if you play at Providence College or Saint Louis University in "CH 2K7." The fight song is a variation of "When the Saints Go Marching In" in the way it sounds. For more information on Saint Joseph's University, visit their official website at: < http://www.sju.edu > and their athletics page at < http://sjuhawks.cstv.com/ >.

Games I don't have results to in this report include games in progress like newcomers California State-Bernadino at UCLA. And people... I apologize. California State-BAKERSFIELD are known as the Roadrunners. California State-Bernadino are known as the Coyotes. Thanks for reading, everyone.

This is Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Here are a few scores to share from just the guys.

--- Men ---
* North Carolina vs. Davidson --- Bobcat Arena(?); Charlotte, NC ---
This game was on ESPN. The boys at the announce table were Sean McDonough, Duke's Jay Bilas, and [one of] FoolKiller's least favorite announcers- Big East Hall of Famer Bill Raftery. This game was highly competitive against these two North Carolina schools. The Wildcats of Davidson College ran out of steam with this loss. (72-68; North Carolina)

* West Virginia Wesleyan at VMI (135-81; VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE) *** ownage ***
* North Carolina Central {Eagles} at Florida {Gators} (105-51; FLORIDA)
* Oral Roberts {Golden Eagles} at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi {Islanders} (86-81; TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI)
* Quinnipiac {Bobcats} at Binghamton {Bearcats} (88-75; BINGHAMTON} <<< alma mater of "Pardon the Interruption's Tony Kornheiser
* Oklahoma State {Cowboys} at North Texas {Mean Green/Eagles} (82-73; NORTH TEXAS)
* Texas Tech {Red Raiders} at Sam Houston State {Bearkats} (56-54; SAM HOUSTON STATE) *** big win ***
* Iowa State {Cyclones} at Bradley {Braves} (65-56; BRADLEY) *** big win ***

SIDE NOTE:
I heard Bradley's fight song in College Hoops 2K7. It sounds a little like Hawaii's fight song.

Every game counts... so did these teams take their opposition seriously?

--- Women ---
* #2 Vanderbilt at Indiana State (77-72, OT; INDIANA STATE) *** upset! ***
* Kentucky {Wildcats} at #?? George Washington {Colonials} (75-65; GEORGE WASHINGTON) <<< Kentucky's ladies are 1-1

College basketball's truly underway. Hope your favorite team is doing well!

This time around, I want to introduce all of you to Florida Gulf Coast University. Florida Gulf Coast is one of the newcomers to Division 1. So allow me to introduce you to this university.

John's Profile School: Florida Gulf Coast University
Florida Gulf Coast is a pretty young place. I'm not talking about the basketball teams, but talking about the university itself. This school is celebrating over 10 years of existance. Should you do the math, you are looking at a school that's been around since 1997. It is not hard to know where FGCU is judging on the name of the school. But WHERE along the Gulf Coast? Why... in the city of Fort Myers, FL of course! This city is about 120 miles south of Tampa. The city is known as the City of Palms. The sports teams are nicknamed the Eagles. They will compete in the Atlantic Sun conference. Good luck to the newcoming Eagles this season.

I mostly used http://www.fgcu.com for my facts. I used Wikipedia for info on Fort Myers. For more information on FGCU athletics, please visit this site: < http://www.fgcuathletics.com >.

My Houston Cougars lost to Virginia Commonwealth (again), but it wasn't as close as I thought it would be. My hometown boys lost 73-72 in the Puerto Rico tournament. Basketball in paradise. It won't be the ONLY one, though. Soon as you know it, it will be time for the Maui Invitational. The South Padre Island invitational is also coming up here in Texas.

Again, limited contributions from me at this point. Hope you all have an amazing day.

ESPN had themselves (some) long discussion over Gardner-Webb beating Kentucky earlier this month. And as part of my limited contributions... the Atlantic Sun beats another SEC team AT an SEC team. This was the close beating the Belmont University Bruins (Nashville, TN) gave the Alabama Crimson Tide. I think it was 85-83. Not sure if that's the score. But now Kentucky AND Alabama (two very good SEC teams) have lost at home to Altantic Sun teams. It would REALLY be the end if say, Jacksonville beats LSU at LSU.

Is the Atlantic Sun for real? Is this showing that the SEC is off a bit in men's hoops? What do you college hoops fans think?

In other action, Chaminade can't pull an upset as Marquette motored away in the EA Sports' Maui Invitational. Duke pulverized Princeton. Many more games this week.
