This is the season-in-review thread. Everyone started undefeated, and we then saw the madness of March ensue. I've had joy in covering Kentucky, North Dakota State (briefly), Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Oakland, and other teams favored by GTPlanet people. I somehow lost interest in covering college hoops on here because of some low involvement. I could get an audience with college football, but not enough for college basketball. Here are some winners and losers:

John's Winners
* Kansas (Div. 1 Men's Champs)
* Tennessee (Div. 1 Women's Champs)
* Winona State (Div. 2 Men's Champs)
* Northern Kentucky (Div. 2 Women's Champs)
* Washington University (Div. 3 Men's Champs)
* Howard Payne (Div. 3 Women's Champs)
* all NAIA National Champions including Oklahoma City University (NAIA Men's Div. 1 Champs, transistioning to the NCAA)

* Memphis
* San Diego
* Houston
* Davidson
* Butler
* Siena College
* Pat Summitt
* John Calipari
* Bill Self
* Tyler Hansbrough
* Kentucky's determination
* Dick Vitale and Hakeem Olajuwon (among others) on Hall of Fame induction
* Houston Baptist University (more representation for my home town)

John's Losers
* my entire East Region
* the loss of Bill Keightley
* Michigan's pathetic season
* New Jersey Institute of Technology (even Iona and Savannah State won more games!)
* players going to the NBA this year
* Memphis' loss to Kansas
* Wichita State (they are better than how they played)
* Fordham's women's team (winless)

These are among many others. I finally want to sound off on Memphis' loss to Kansas in the championship game and what it reminds me of.

John Sounds Off! - Sympathy for Memphis
A reoccuring thought came to me when Memphis lost. I think of Memphis this year... and I kind of think of another Conference USA school- Houston. As much as I'm upset that Phi Slamma Jamma did everything but win the National Championship for the Houston Cougars, Kansas' win over Memphis reminds me a lot of Houston when they fell. To me, ESPN has to keep reminding Houstonians like myself of a great team that didn't (and I hate to say this) win the big one. I'm sure FoolKiller hates any classical material of Kentucky losing in tourney action. I'm sure he feels the same way about the overplayed Duke/Kentucky match in 1992 as I am with North Carolina State beating Houston in 1983. My Cougars back in the day won as many as 26 straight games one season during the glory days of Houston basketball. Houston and Memphis play in Conference USA. It's hard to call a team that's lost only one game an underdog, but I think of this as a non-BCS school trying to beat a BCS school. Todd Reesing was the man in Kansas football this past season, and Mario Chalmers is the man for Kansas basketball (though I love Brandon Rush for KU). This is just a somewhat reoccuring thought as I saw Kansas take down Memphis- the impact of Memphis being a team of destiny reminds me a lot of Houston's losses to North Carolina State and Georgetown. Phi Slamma Jamma has been the team of destiny for my hometown Houston Cougars. Having to see Houston lose those two National Championship games pains me. It pains me here in Houston much like FoolKiller having to continually see his Kentucky Wildcats lose to Duke in 1992 on Laettner's clutch shot in the end. You might even equate this to the 2005 Fighting Illini of Illinois (dougiemeats' own) losing to Ohio State in their final game, then losing to North Carolina in the NCAA Championship game. It just seems like teams of destiny fall and fall hard in the NCAA. It's why I say you're obligated to lose in basketball, as long as you don't lose often. Congratulations to Memphis on all they've done.

This is my final time regularly covering college hoops on GTPlanet due to not enough interest and readers. I admit I've been lazy at times covering hoops. I still watch with invested interest. What happens now is that I'll think about offering a thread for those who want to chat college basketball and cover games, but I won't be doing too many more reports. I'll even throw in the March Madness action that's truly as much a part of college basketball as all the regular season games that mean everything.
