While I'm no longer covering college basketball (lack of overall interest and involvement from others), I still want to offer a college basketball thread for the upcoming season. Can Kansas and/or Memphis return to the Final Four, or even the National Championship game? Can teams like Davidson, Siena College, or whomever can work some amazing magic this season? Who will be some of the standout players of 2008-2009?

I'm not going to religiously cover college basketball as I have in the past. Anyone willing to make college basketball coverage relevant on GTPlanet is free to offer regular content to this thread.

The fun mostly begins in November, but it's never too early to preview. This is the before-during-after thread for college basketball as I've given up on covering college hoops on GTP. So let's hoop it up- college style!

Word has it that Lute O.'s career may be over if he resigns from the University of Arizona. I'm not sure who the interim head coach will be at Arizona should Lute Olson (or Olsen?) resigns.

We're fast heading into November. So that means that college basketball is forthcoming. Remember that I will not be covering college basketball on GTP religiously because I can't grow a true audience and that covering both men's and women's action has been a little too much for me. This is the thread that covers this entire season, including playoffs. I may chime in every now and then. But, I won't cover this like I do with college football.

VERY late news... it's said that a stroke caused Lute Olson to resign upon doctor's orders.

Tonight will be a matchup involving Presbyterian College and #5 Duke. I'll post the rest of the preseason Top 25 in this thread. Please remember that I will no longer cover college basketball like I do college football. I may offer a few scores, but that's about it. I'm just hoping there can be lots of college basketball chatter through the season with my help in offering news bits and scores.

Duke should win this one easily. The Blue Hose of Presbyterian College stands very little (if any) chance against a game Duke squad.

Not a good start for the Kentucky Wildcats to start out the new season. Kentucky hosted Virginia Military Institute (I believe they hosted them), but lost pretty bad- 113-100. Sam Houston State beat down a school I initially wanted to attend- Schreiner University (a Division 3 non-football school in the BEAUTIFUL city of Kerrville, Texas).

Michael Wilbon made a prediction as to how Kentucky will do against North Carolina (even without Tyler Hansbrough)- "Kentucky's not even going to get to within 20 points of North Carolina." I know Kentucky's in some adjusting times, but I'm sure they can still make the NCAA Tournament with solid play. I have my doubts on Kentucky, but I doubt they'll be the Michigan (or Northwestern) of the SEC.

[UPDATE] - Happy 64th birthday, Jim Boeheim!

Today's a big day of college basketball with this nationwide tour of college hoops madness. The big capper for tonight is Kentucky at #1 North Carolina. I'm very uncertain about Kentucky at UNC. That's going to be one hell of a test for the Wildcats in this battle of blue schools. Thing is, will it be Kentucky blue or UNC blue?

Kentucky ended up losing 77-58 at North Carolina last night. Ouch. On a lighter note, Western Kentucky won.

Good news for Houston (as in the city) is that we're going to host a Final Four in 2016... at Reliant Stadium. I know football stadiums with football is nothing new, but I have my resentment. The layout for the Reliant Stadium deal during this past NCAA Men's Tournament South Regional was a pretty good configuration, if a bit empty. The new Dallas Cowboys stadium will host the Final Four in either 2014 or 2015.

This year's Men's Final Four will be in Detroit. Preferably the Palace at Auburn Hills, which is a hop, skip, and jump away for our own Joey D. Speaking of which, this is the schedule for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies:

Their next five matches are all football schools: at Syracuse, at Iowa, at Kansas State, home against Delaware State, and home against Southern Utah.

An upset just happened- Seton Hall knocked off #20 USCal 63-61 at the O' Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Congratulations to the Pirates of Seton Hall University.

Yesterday, Texas Tech's men put up 167 points to beat East Central 167-115. Where's the defense?

To get you excited about the new season, here's a One Shining Moment from this past season of NCAA basketball:

Get excited! College basketball is back!

Davidson knocked off North Carolina State to a score of (I believe) 72-69. I'm kind of watching #22 Miami playing at Kentucky. Current score is 40-24 with Miami leading with about 3:00 left in the first half. However, expect all 75,000 people (exaggeration) at Rupp Arena to give the blue and white some hope.

The team I'm most disappointed in this season is Indiana. I know it's Tom Crean's first year at Indiana apart from his lovely run at Marquette. I'm not covering college hoops, but it won't stop me from chatting about it.

BIG upset! Duke is so good and Michigan is so sorry, right? Well, Wolverine football fans weren't really proud of anything, but Wolverine men's basketball fans celebrated an 81-73 upset at the basketball version of the big house. So much for Duke's non-conference winning streak, right? Probably sure the home winning streak will still be intact among conference and non-conference schools.

Congratulations to Michigan on this big upset. All Michigan needs to do is play solid basketball the rest of the year, and they MAY make March Madness.

A big match tonight involves Davidson vs. West Virginia at Madison Square Garden. It's a chance to see the much-publicized Stephen Curry in action for the Wildcats of Davidson College. Recent polls have put Gonzaga up to fourth in the nation. Back on Saturday, Kentucky creamated one of my former schools- Lamar University. Since college football is mostly off, why not enjoy some hardwood action?

Big upset in Kansas City- the Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts barely edged out the Kansas Jayhawks to the tune of a 61-60 victory. The Hoyas of #19 Georgetown shocked the #17 Memphis Tigers 79-70 in Overtime. Do you want to know why big schools don't play at the schools of mid-majors? Just ask #? Tennessee getting beat down at Temple. It was an 88-72 beating.

Good news to report for FoolKiller as the Kentucky Wildcats took down the Indiana Hoosiers. I'm guessing the Hoosiers will go down to 3-9. Tough job for Tom Crean to try to keep Indiana as a proven power. They may be a lock for the NIT. Even then, the NIT is an accomplishment for teams not very good (yet not good enough for a National Championship).

That's all. I'll keep posting college hoops nonsense if no one else wants to contribute...

Big upset: Portland State knocks off #7 Gonzaga 77-70! The Vikings reeled in a big fish. Portland State may have made their case to be in the NCAA Tournament if they keep up the good work.

Kentucky may have a winning streak over Louisville, but their losing streak (and I can't believe I'm saying this) to Louisville in men's basketball continues. Kentucky fought hard all game long, but the final deathblow was nailed by Louisville- a three-poiinter that led #18M Louisville past Kentucky 74-71. Kentucky played a hell of a game, even in a losing effort.

A big men's match on Tuesday involves unbeaten Wake Forest hosting North Carolina.

The #1 team in the men's rankings just got knocked off. Boston College did the impossible- beating #1 North Carolina AT North Carolina. The score was 85-78. Congratulations on Boston College for a HUGE win.

Harvard beat their first ranked team in history as they beat Boston College 82-70 at B.C. Boston College goes from beating #1 North Carolina on the road... then losing at home to Harvard. Right now on CBS College Sports, San Diego State's Lady Aztecs are beating down Air Force in a football blowout score- 52-14 with 13:20 left in the game.

Dejuan Blair and the Pitt Panthers are now number one in the nation for the second straight week after whooping Georgetown and St. John's, 2009 is shaping up to be a great year for Pittsburgh Sports.

FINALLY someone responds to my college basketball chatting... And really, Pittsburgh is a great program. All I wonder is if they are really good enough to make a Final Four, especially this Panthers' team.

North Carolina is sliding downwards, starting 0-2 with losses to Boston College and at Wake Forest. Michigan is vastly improving. Be sure to look out for programs like BYU, Davidson, Temple, and teams like that.

I wonder the same thing, Pitt has had a top teir program for years now, and Jamie Dixon is an awesome coach, but they can never crack the sweet 16. I really think this year is the one, though, especially with how absolutely dominant Dejuan Blair is. He may not be the tallest guy out there every game, but he really gives it his all in the paint and his astounding rebound numbers show it. Here's to at least the final 4 this year, and hopefully more.

Didn't even know this thread existed, or I would have replied much earlier, but I'll do my best to stick around and keep the college hoops chat up, as its the only kind of basketball I enjoy. The NBA is lost on me.

Well thanks for your contributions. If I were usually covering college hoops, then tomorrow would be a day in which I celebrate my birthday (my 26th as of this post) as well as providing scores.

#8 Syracuse meets #11 Georgetown tonight in Washington D.C. It's a rivalry game. And I'll tell you this much, Max Powers. Pittsburgh will have inside track on the Big East... as long as Georgetown, Connecticut, Marquette, and Villanova don't have their say.

Jodie Meeks (Kentucky) was amazing last night. Here were his numbers in the Wildcats' victory at Tennessee:

Points: 54 pts <<< new school record!
Field Goals: 15-22
3-point Field Goals: 10-15 <<< new school record!
Free Throws: 14-14
Rebounds: 8

He's an amazing player for Kentucky. No doubt that if Kentucky is to go far in March, they need only go with Meeks as well as his other players. I think he's the floor general leading his blue and white troops to (maybe I'm too expressive here, but...) their eighth National Championship.

#12 Georgetown just beat up on #8 Syracuse. They lost 88-74 in Washington D.C. A team I forgot to include in my previous post as far as Big East teams to look out for is Louisville. Still, a big win for the Hoyas.

Pittsburgh got past lowly South Florida 75-62. Unless South Florida improves in men's hoops, they should probably return to Confernce USA for men's basketball.

Pittsburgh was ranked #1 for the first time in history... and a VERY game Louisville tamed the Pitt Panthers 69-63 at Louisville. Really, don't make such a big deal of unbeaten teams anyways. Bsides, the only unbeaten left is Pittsburgh.

FACT: Louisville's last win over a #1 team was in 12/2/2003 when Kentucky was #1. Big disparity now as Kentucky isn't back to their former glory, though they are vastly improving (unlike Indiana). I anticipate both Louisville and Pittsburgh to not only make March Madness, but see at least one of the two teams make (and this is a stretch) the Elite Eight or higher.

Kay Yow was taken away from us as she died from her two decade-long battle with breast cancer. She was 66 years old and a true inspiration for all.

Duke is currently No. 1 in the Power Rankings. Surprised that North Carolina and Wake Forest aren't at the top. Mainly thinking Arizona State will improve some time soon.

So Oral Roberts is the best team in the Summit League? Oakland didn't get the memo because they beat down the Golden Eagles 81-69. BIG win for the Golden Grizzlies (Joey D's own).

My Jayhawks lost to Mizzou last night. :(

27 turnovers = bad.
