GTPlanet, no teams will be playing this week in 1-A. All the action is mostly going to be Postseason at this point. However, I'll use this space to talk about some "season so far" issues. I also want to share this space for Heisman and All-American selections. So feel free to use this space to talk about the season as it stands.

I was reading Yahoo! Sports on college football. Here is a link I found below:

What do you think about this deal here? In a later post, I'll key in on the three divisions of NCAA football with playoff systems. I will even talk about how a 32-team playoff would work better and why I thought of it. I'll update my postseason thread with a Bowl Game Preview.

NOTE: Due to some personal problems in my life and Finals, I'll just share some Heisman talk. I'll likely be away until my last Finals are complete by next Wednesday.

Here are your three Heisman finalists:

Troy Smith - Ohio State
Brady Quinn - Notre Dame
Darren McFadden - Arkansas

So boys and girls... who'll take it?

I am completely in support of a playoff system. This whole bowl thing makes no sense. Plus, you could have a tenth ranked team win the championship, whereas right now their championship chances are over after they lose to another top ten team in September. It is just stupid. One loss doesn't suddenly make you non-champion material.

I'm going with Smith or Quinn, but I haven't seen McFadden play. I think the bowl games will have to decide this one.

If I had to bet, they are giving it to Troy Smith.

HEISMAN CEREMONY
* Ricky Williams. Doug Flutie. Tony Dorsett. Andre Ware. Matt Leinart. Alex Smith. Paul Horning. Someone is going to join college football's ultimate fraternity. This fraternity doesn't need things like silly challenges, funny handshakes, certain passwords, or whatever. This is all about college football's elites. It was Troy Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Brady Quinn of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Darren McFadden of Arkansas' Razorbacks. The highest honor in 1-A/FBS football went to Troy Smith. Growing up from a dangerous life in Clevland, OH, the Ohio State QB won top honors. Remember that Ohio State will face Florida of the SEC. (HEISMAN WINNER: Troy Smith)

I'll give out info on your 2006 All-Americans when I get a chance to report it.

Here is an extra for you to check out.

JOHN'S SPECIAL: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - DEFUNCT FOOTBALL STADIUMS
There's evidence of teams having football teams before that are no longer active. I can prove it too. I may put up some pictures so you can see for yourself. What I learned about some schools is that some schools without current football teams have some stadiums either in great condition or slowly dying out and grassing up. I'll explain some examples courtesy of Google Maps. If you have IE7, you can use that Zoom Level feature to see the picture a bit closer.

* St John's University - Jamaica, NY
St. John's University was part of the MAAC in football and is currently a participant in the Big East for most other sports. This school is based in the greater New York City area in the borough of Queens. The St. John's campus had their last football season in 2002. From what I seen, St. John's seems to have a fairly fresh football field even though there's no more Red Storm football. Even though the school is in the Queens area, I don't think you really get to see the high-rises of lower Manhattan. The football field still stands even with a good array of seats available. I likely think the area is still used for track and field. Take a look below:

* University of Texas-Arlington - Arlington, TX
Now let's return to my home state after a spell in New York state. Texas is a football-rich state. It doesn't matter if you love the NFL, college, high school, middle school, pee-wee... Texas is a football state. But what happens when some of the big-name schools don't have football teams? One of those is Texas-Arlington. This northern Texas school had 1985 as their final year of pigskin tossing. I was two years old then. I saw a satellite view of Texas-Arlington and noticed the still-standing football field. The end zones were blue with "Mavericks" on both end zones. The stadium looked pretty fresh along with the fresh football field. There has been talk of some students of UTA looking to see Texas-Arlington return Mavericks football to the Southland Conference. Here's your top-down look at Texas-Arlington's football field:

* University of the Pacific - Stockton, CA
Let's look at the University of the Pacific. The University of the Pacific used to known as the College of the Pacific. I know it used to be called that because there used to be a logo of a tiger up in the air with a stadium in the background. Unlike the two I discussed earlier, the University of the Pacific has a football stadium that looks pretty dated. The Pacific Tigers used to call their old stadium the home of UotP football. The layout is sort of like a horseshoe. The field itself looks dated considering 1995 was the last year of Tigers football at this stadium. This is your look at UOP's stadium below:

I won't have the luxury of broadband Internet at my house to have more efficient usage of the Google Maps service. So I may try to update my findings in another thread or so. Maybe it's expensive to bring down such stadiums. Either that, or the schools may want them to stand there to maybe keep some memories alive there. I used to be a student of Lamar University. If you've been to Lamar University (Beaumont, TX, USA) and you've looked around Montagne Center, there is an old football field around Montagne Center. I think some high school football was played a lot at that old stadium. Lamar's football program ended either in the 1980s or the early 1990s. But if I find some other colleges and universities that once had football teams and still have hints of their stadium left, I'll share them with you all.
