Because of Hurricane Ike and subsequently going 12 days without electricity, I have had to suspend my college football coverage. I am severely behind. So I'm going to do something that's outside of my character as far as doing my job on GTPlanet with college football- everything that has occured in my abscence, I will not update posts with score information. No winner and loser segments. That's in the past. I have to move on... and so must the season. Let me just say that it feels great to be back on and back with electricity after Hurricane Ike did his thing to millions of people in its path.

So here are a number of things I've heard and seen...

* Notre Dame beats Michigan
* BYU (pardon my language) b*tchslapped UCLA 59-0
* UNLV (of all teams) knocks off Arizona State
* Tennessee's embarassing season continues as Florida knocks Tennessee's teeth out ("Fire Phil" by some fans)
* my hometown Houston Cougars are 1-3 and will face... East Carolina... AT East Carolina... this Saturday (I can already smell 1-4)
* Texas A&M falls apart at home to Miami
* Florida International is still terrible; even Temple and Duke won games
* (I believe) Kentucky's still unbeaten

I hope to remain with you all as long as I can because I love the hell out of GTPlanet and all the people who read my reports and put up with my college sports gibberish. I'll be sure to cover Thursday night action to the best of my ability the way only I can.

NOTE: This week's thread is called "Hunker Down!" because it's the phrase I've heard countless times when Hurricane Ike was going to threaten my area.

So it looks like tonight's big game is USCal going up to meet Oregon State. Oregon State looks like the Oregon State I've known when I got into football back in 2002- very good. The matchup begins at 8:00 PM CDT on ESPN. There's also a black college football match involving Mississippi Valley State going to Birmingham to meet Alabama State in this SWAC conference match.

Conference play is basically here. You ready for conference play?

I'm back for good after Hurricane Ike and over 12 days without power. It's time I strive to return to cover college football for the masses. You know, I had some time to check out the new season of "Ugly Betty" featuring the beautiful America Ferrera. Only... not really beautiful in Ugly Betty. Anyhow, I have college football while you want to express your own feelings towards what kind of action took place. Maybe you guys are out there wanting to get your girlfriend/wife the cutest pair of peep-toe pumps or chic boots. Maybe you're out getting ready to tailgate for the weekend. I want you to feel free to enjoy this week of action.

Division 1: FBS Scores
This isn't the Game of the Week, but it does involve the top-ranked team in the nation.

Corvalis, Oregon ~ Trojan Men Ready to Wrestle Some Beavers
* #1 USCal {Trojans} at Oregon State {Beavers} --- Pac-10 Play ---
I'm a fan of Ugly Betty. For some people, this could be a beatdown courtesy of the cardinal and gold of USCal. The Trojans are busy as Beavers in the classroom and the sporting arenas. These busy beavers will meet Oregon State's Beavers. Can Oregon State build a dam big enough to contain USCal's offense? They sure did! The Men of Troy were no match for a bunch of busy Beavers. (27-21; OREGON STATE)

New Orleans, Louisiana ~ Big Easy Win?
* SMU {Mustangs} at Tulane {Green Wave}
Tulane kept the scoring going as the Mustangs of SMU were swept away by the Green Wave. (34-27; TULANE)

Division 1: FCS Scores
Two black colleges are home teams for FCS action tonight.

Montgomery, Alabama ~ The Magic City Ready for a Magical Matchup in the SWAC
* Mississippi Valley State {Delta Devils} at Alabama State {Hornets}
FCS supremacy in Alabama involves Alabama A&M and Alabama State. This game involves the Hornets of Alabama State University. MVSU is a moutful. Try saying the following: Mississippi Valley State University's Delta Devils. The Delta Devils were a surprise playing men's basketball in the SWAC. MVSU can be found in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The Delta Devils returned to Mississippi with a huge loss on the road. (47-7; ALABAMA STATE)

EXTRA: My SWAC Thoughts
I almost always regard Alabama A&M in all SWAC athletics. I think whoever will win in the SWAC will probably be from Louisiana or Alabama. Alabama A&M is my favorite from Alabama. Meanwhile, rivals Grambling State and Southern may well determine SWAC supremacy in Louisiana. Also, don't count out the Prairie View A&M Panthers. A relative in my family is a Prairie View A&M grad.

???, Tennessee ~ Golden Eagles Take Flight Against Central Methodist[/I]
Central Methodist {???} at Tennessee Tech {Golden Eagles}
The home team is one of our nation's historically-black universities. Tennessee Tech is home to the Golden Eagles. These boys are ready to take flight against Central Methodist. The Golden Eagles put up the same number of points as Alabama State did in this large win. (47-19; TENNESSEE TECH)

Division 2 Scores
* Fairmont State at Glenville State (23-13; GLENVILLE STATE)
* Harding at #2 North Alabama (52-0; #2 NORTH ALABAMA)

(no Division 3 Scores - begins Saturday)

That will do it for Thursday scores. I hope other people in my area will have their power and all of their aid. I'll be back for Friday scores and maybe some other various chatter. The Friday Night match will involve unbeaten Connecticut going out to Louisville. I actually fear that UConn may get pounded by Louisville. But I'm not really sure Louisville is that team that could confidently take down Connecticut. We'll see when the game takes place Friday night.

I am slowly, but surely trying to get my wireless broadband network expanded in my house. It looks like I'll finally join the broadband revolution this weekend. Meanwhile, I have college football for you. I hope this experience will be to your liking.

--- Division 1: FBS Scores ---

Louisville, Kentucky ~ The 'Ville Tries to Get Their Act Together as UConn Comes to Town
* Connecticut {Huskies} at Louisville {Cardinals}
Time for a Kentucky Derby of a different kind. You see, the Louisville Cardinals are trying to get a leg up in the Big East as they hosted a pack of Huskies from the University of Connecticut. I think UConn COULD crush Louisville in men's basketball at Freedom Hall. Trade the round ball for a pigskin. Let's get it on. I got home at about 9:05 PM CDT. Louisville was leading... 21-17, I believe. Louisville couldn't keep a good pack of dogs down as UConn shattered Louisville's dreams of a Cardinal comeback. (26-21; Connecticut)

My GAME OF THE WEEK this week involves Alabama's trip to Georgia. Georgia's calling for a Blackout. What's the impact of such a deal?

--- Division 1: FCS Scores ---
It's time to hit up the New York City area for this match between two New York state teams.

Brooklyn, New York ~ Seawolves See Prideful Players
* Hofstra {Pride} at Stony Brook {Seawolves}
You know you have to have a pretty cool team if you're nicknamed the Pride. Hofstra has pride. Will this pride give them confidence playing this game in Brooklyn? I only know of St. Francis College (non-football) and Long Island University (non-football) as far as Brooklyn schools go. Hofstra is not based in the New York City area. The Seawolves of Stony Brook ARE from the New York City area. The University of Stony Brook is (I believe) a religious kind of school. I've even seen the coaches' show on the former CSTV regarding Stony Brook athletics. The Seawolves weren't ferocious enough to beat Hofstra. And thus, didn't play too prideful. (43-3; Stony Brook)

--- Division 2 Scores ---
Only one game was played here. Let's see who beat who.

* Stonehill at Bentley (17-14; BENTLEY)

(no Division 3 scores)

I'm still working on trying to get my wireless broadband going. To give you perspective of logging on to a wireless broadband network, here's something for you all. I can remember that we've been logging on to the Internet since about 1997. It was the year I joined America Online. All of this was with dialup. I think my first computer was a 14.4k modem from a very slow Packard Bell computer with Windows 95. It was 2000 or so when we got an eMachines computer. It had a 56K modem that we've reliably used (even though eMachines was a crap brand). Since 2005, my own computer is this lovely HP unit that is about the best bang for the buck. It, too, has a 56K modem, but it also has an Ethernet port. Since [what would have been] Hurricane Gustav, we attempted to have wireless broadband in our house from a Wireless-G router. My parents purchased a Wireless-G PCI card so I could freely access the Internet whenever I please.

This may allow me to make some quick comments on GTPlanet as the games progress. I'm okay making some quick posts on GTP while preparing a full report. I've done this before. Someone comes into one of my threads and talks about the game they've seen as I comment. I hope to join the wireless broadband revolution soon. Thank you for reading my Friday report! Enjoy your Saturday of college football no matter who your favorite team is or how you celebrate. Just be sure to cheer your booty off while having your favorite snacks with a favorite drink of yours.

I just want to let you all know that I finally got my wireless network set up. So I may come in regularly and offer a few quick comments.

I haven't compiled my report yet as of yet. Though I now have wireless broadband, you can still expect to see my full report and Winners and Losers some time before sunrise tomorrow morning. As I say... I do my report Saturday night and into the overnight, and you can see the full report Sunday morning after sunrise.

A few things to note from games so far...

* Michigan State pulling away at Indiana
* Syracuse beauting Pittsburgh?
* Mississippi(?) upsetting Florida?
* North Carolina's taking down Miami AT Miami?
* Clemson = overrated? Just ask Maryland!

More updates some time when my report is complete.

Wow, it was an upset weekend for sure.

I can't believe Michigan pulled out a win, they looked awful the first half of the game and they came back to do so well. There might be a chance for them after all, but who knows.

I don't know you personally. Who's your favorite team? How do you celebrate? What makes you excited to be a college football fan? No matter how you celebrate or how you share your love of college football, the one constant is that you love college football. Because you care, so do I. Why don't I reward you by letting you in on what has happened during today and tonight's games?

NOTE #1: I fell asleep last night while trying to complete my report. So I may need to cover some scores quickly via RAPID FIRE.

NOTE #2: This is dedicated in loving memory to the late Paul Newman.

Saturday Synopsis:
* upsets-a-plenty
* some VERY unexpected results

Division 1: FBS Scores
The GAME OF THE WEEK is a stop in SEC country as we go into the Peachtree State.

Athens, Georgia ~ A Trip to Hell
* #8 Alabama {Crimson Tide} at #3 Georgia {Bulldogs} *** GAME OF THE WEEK ***
Some argued that last week's match involving Georgia at Arizona State should have been the big ESPN match. That wish wasn't granted. So how about a proper primetime battle for you all? Alabama's tough. Georgia's tough. This is a Georgia vs. Alabama that's a big match even if it isn't the storied Auburn/Georgia game. The Bulldogs aren't afraid of any high tide, especially Crimson Tide. Let's see who takes care of business in this match. With about 11:58 left in the first half, Georgia was the one getting blacked out with a 17-0 beating so far. What a GAME OF THE WEEK- Alabama ahead of Georgia 31-0. This even included Matthew Stafford's first time picked off in over 121 pass attempts. At the 10:30 left mark in the third quarter, Georgia FINALLY scored. It was 31-3. I'm sure shows like "Jim Rome is Burning" will just lash out at Georgia. With 9:45 left in the game, the score was 34-17. Encouraging news for Georgia was that they limited Alabama to only a field goal. That's encouraging news, but Georgia still has plenty of work to do if they want to preserve their high ranking. Georgia wanted a blackout of Alabama, but Georgia was out of power all game long and NEVER led at all against Alabama. (41-30; #8 Alabama)

SIDE NOTE/COMMENTARY) - I'd like to congratulate John Parker Wilson on having the most passing career yards, surpassing the wonderful Brodie Croyle who now plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Let's move from one SEC team to another. FoolKiller, this first one's for you! Hope Studentdriver is looking at the one below the Kentucky report...

Lexington, Kentucky ~ Upstarts Western Kentucky are Ready to Potentially Start a New Rivalry
* Western Kentucky {Hilltoppers} at Kentucky {Wildcats}
When you are fans of two schools, how do you dress the part? This is a game that tests FoolKiller's loyalties. Blue Kentucky shirt with red WKU hat? Red WKU shirt with blue Kentucky cap? Kentucky from head-to-toe, but in WKU flip-flops or boxers? FoolKiller's going to be a winner no matter which team wins. Only as long as the red team isn't Louisville. Because then, he'd wish Louisville get slapped around by UK. The Wildcats are a bunch of cool cats ready to ice WKU. The Hilltoppers are slowly transistioning to life in FBS. The 2002 FCS champions know they can succeed in FBS. Away from football, the Bowling Green, KY-based Western Kentucky University has one of the winningest men's college basketball programs in NCAA history. I doubt E.A. Diddle will be in Commonwealth Stadium coaching WKU to upset Kentucky. So who won this one? Kentucky pulled this one off. Welcome to FBS, Western Kentucky. (41-3; KENTUCKY)

Columbia, South Carolina ~ Blazers Ready to Have a Gamecock Dinner
* Alabama-Birmingham {Blazers} at South Carolina {Gamecocks}
South Carolina tries to motor along this season. The Gamecocks want a little recess as these grown-up kids play with a bunch of Blazers from UAB. Ahh, recess... just don't remind UAB that South Carolina doubled up UAB to win. (26-13; SOUTH CAROLINA)

Gainesville, Florida ~ Gators Try to Bite Into Some Rebels
* Mississippi {Rebels} at #4 Florida {Gators}
Duuuuuh, da duh da duh... GO GATORS! Have your Gatorade ready because the University of Florida is ready to see their favorite reptiles rule The Swamp. I've never been in a swamp or wetland, but I'd at least have to know many dangerous things can be in the water. Don't ask Mississippi to use caution because they are Rebels. The University of Mississippi (or Ole Miss) are ready to get down and dirty with Florida. Tebow and his Gators are the best thing since baked bread? Mississippi wasn't buying it. (31-30; Mississippi)

As much as I like the SEC, I must go elsewhere and cover more ground.

Ann Arbor, Michigan ~ Two Different Sides of the Fence
* #9 Wisconsin {Badgers} at Michigan {Wolverines}
Michigan hasn't been the same lately. I optomistically tabbed Michigan down to make a Bowl Game. Right now, the Wolverines are looking up (which is almost rare) at a tougher foe. The Badgers from Dairy Country are thinking beatdown. Michigan and Wisconsin aren't really rivals to where they play for something big, but these two can beat each others' brains out much like Michigan/Ohio State or Wisconsin/Minnesota. With about 4:29 left in the third quarter, Michigan was trailing 19-0. This was going to be a tough year for Michigan. I wasn't expecting it to be THIS tough. At about 14:47 left in the game, Michigan finally found pay dirt. They probably need two more touchdowns to take the lead. Michigan is a badass team for a reason. They fought their way back to stun #9 Wisconsin. This is a character win for Michigan. But for a school like Michigan with a program like theirs, they don't need character wins because they have PLENTY of character. (37-35; MICHIGAN)

Norman, Oklahoma ~ Former Southwest Conference Foes Clash as TCU is Thinking Amphibious Assault
* TCU {Horned Frogs} at Oklahoma {Sooners}
Two teams with unique nicknames will clash. Back a few years ago, Oklahoma was on Upset Alert when they took on TCU... and lost to them. The Horned Frogs of TCU carry Texas pride all the way from Fort Worth, Texas to Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners are ranked pretty well. Can the crimson and cream Sooners take out TCU? You bet they did! Purple must have been all over the field as Oklahoma ripped apart TCU. (35-10; #2 OKLAHOMA)

SIDE NOTE: I think Oklahoma's probably going to be ranked #1 in the nation with losses from USCal and Georgia. It's likely to happen in my view.

Greenville, North Carolina ~ Once a BCS Buster, ECU Takes Out Revenge from N.C. State Loss on Houston
* Houston {Cougars} at #23 East Carolina {Pirates}
People give a reputation about Texas as being this Wild West place where bringing a knife to a gunfight is suicide. Depending on how you want to take it, it's either true or false. One thing you can be sure of is that it's going to be one hell of a fight when you got a fun-to-watch Texas team taking on a potent team. UH is no different. For a team that's 1-3, the Houston Cougars are NEVER afraid to put up a fight. I predicted that Houston would go 1-4. Believe it or not, this is the C-USA opener for both teams. Houston has a chance to move ahead as they make their C-USA West campaign. Likewise, East Carolina is staging their C-USA East campaign. Can the Pirates regain their swagger? For all I know, East Carolina may easily be a C-USA threat no matter what Central Florida thinks. Houston led at the half by no less than seven points. Afterwards... what the hell happened? UH led 38-17 with 11:55 left in the game. Did this team all of a sudden fall apart when I profiled them? Case Keenum (QB, Houston) picked up his 6th straight game with 300+ passing yards in a game. Houston beats their first FBS opponent this season as well as pulling a win over a somewhat more capable East Carolina team. (41-24; Houston)

Winston-Salem, North Carolina ~ Wake Forest is Wide Awake in Overrating Navy
* Navy {Midshipmen} at #17 Wake Forest {Demon Deacons}
The Midshipmen sank Wake Forest in this upset win. USS Demon Deacon couldn't sink Navy in this one. (24-17; Navy)

Houston, Texas ~ Something Special Brewing in Houston
* North Texas {Mean Green/Eagles} at Rice {Owls}
The tandem of Clement-Dillard set a new NCAA record for career scoring passes by the same duo as the Owls destroyed the Mean Green of North Texas. (77-20; RICE)

Durham, North Carolina ~ Changing of the Guard?
* Virginia {Cavaliers} at Duke {Blue Devils}
The Virginia Cavaliers should be ashamed of themselves for doing next to nothing against the Blue Devils. (31-3; DUKE)

Auburn, Alabama ~ Volunteers Hope a Trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium Will Turn Things Around
* Tennessee {Volunteers} at #15 Auburn {Tigers}
Tennessee almost wished Peyton Manning had some extra years of eligibility because Tennessee has been almost completely lethargic. This is not the kind of vintage Volunteer team. Can you believe that Tennessee has only ONE win? The Tigers trumped Tennessee. And all the while, making the "Fire Phil" chants become stronger. If they lose to Northern Illinois next week, Tennessee is going to be a great disappointment this season. (14-12; #15 AUBURN)

Baton Rouge, Louisiana ~ Cats vs. Dogs in the SEC... Who Wins THIS Time?
* Mississippi State {Bulldogs} at #5 LSU {Tigers}
I don't want to forget Kent. So I'm going to tell him about how his LSU Tigers fared against Mississippi State's Bulldogs. Mississippi upset Florida, but LSU did what Florida couldn't- win. (34-24; #5 LOUISIANA STATE)

Pasadena, California ~ The Monopoly in Los Angeles Football Ends... but the Monotony is the Same
* #25 Fresno State {Bulldogs} at UCLA {Bruins}
Way to go, UCLA. The Bruins still can't make any positive progress as the Bruins let the Fresno State Bulldogs slap them around. (36-31; #25 Fresno State)

Mount Pleasant, Michigan ~ Buffalo Seeks a Pleasant Surprise in Mount Pleasant
* Buffalo {Bulls} at Central Michigan {Chippewas}
Our own Studentdriver talked about how Buffalo could really threaten for the MAC title. My MAC pick was Central Michigan. If this ends up being the title game or a critical match in the MAC, then this game is crucial in deciding who's better. The Buffalo Bulls a young bunch of upstarts trying to show Central Michigan just how overrated they are. Meanwhile, the Chippewas are ready to prove prognosticators right that Central Michigan is indeed for real. Mission accomplished for the Chippewas. (27-25; CENTRAL MICHIGAN)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ~ A Rare Close Game for Temple
* Western Michigan {Broncos} at Temple {Owls}
Finally, I want to talk about Temple. The Owls lose a close game to Western Michigan. No, let me repeat that- TEMPLE (you know, the dopes that like getting their asses kicked) lost a close game to a talented Western Michigan team. Don't believe me? See the score! (7-3; Western Michigan)

John's Winners and Losers

BIGGEST WIN(S) OF THE WEEK ~ Michigan Comes from Behind to Stun #9 Wisconsin
Smile as wide as you can, Joey D. You probably were as the Wolverines were able to take care of business. Michigan showed real character in winning this match.

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE WEEK ~ There May a Team Stinks Worse Than Florida International- VIRGINIA!
And the winner of "most pathetic losers in college football besides FIU" goes to... Virginia! Come on now... who the hell loses to DUKE 31-3? Duke is a team that can be easily beaten without any real effort. This was beyond pathetic. I picked this loss because it's worse than Alabama dismantling Georgia in Georgia's blackout.

UPSET(S) OF THE WEEK (if any) ~ Yeah, "if any..." Oregon State Knocks #1 USCal from the Catbird Seat
The Beavers beat USCal in a tight fit. I almost always nominate a #1 upset as top upset. While I didn't see all of this game, the race for #1 just got more interesting. And you can thank Oregon State for this.

OWNAGE(S) OF THE WEEK ~ Rice Reminds North Texas That They are the Worst Team in Texas
The University of North Texas isn't going to like Rice hammering them. It was tough for me to pick an Ownage winner. So what I chose was Rice's hammering of North Texas. This is even though some games ended with 60+ margins of victory. North Texas is based in Denton, TX... not very far from Dallas. This isn't a Houston vs. Dallas thing, but...

North Texas... OWNED 77-20 by Rice!

John's Student Lounge
* I noted that I joined the broadband revolution. This will add a new dimension as to how I deliver my scores to you all. I may even come into my threads and make quick comments about games in progress. I'll see how to utilize this further.

* There were two Asian cars I've REALLY gotten into this past weekend- the all-new Mazda 6 and the all-new Hyundai Genesis. Both cars are exceptional. Amazing cars.

Thanks for your time this weekend! I'll be working on next week's thread.

The offense here at USC managed much better this weekend with redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia running the offense for almost three quarters.

Garcia: 13/20, 131 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; 18 car, 86 yards, 1 TD

It looks as if he will get the start in Oxford next week against Ole Miss.

Lexington, Kentucky ~ Upstarts Western Kentucky are Ready to Potentially Start a New Rivalry
* Western Kentucky {Hilltoppers} at Kentucky {Wildcats}
Diddle will be in Commonwealth Stadium coaching WKU to upset Kentucky. So who won this one? Kentucky pulled this one off. Welcome to FBS, Western Kentucky. (41-3; KENTUCKY)

I have missed out on the last couple of weeks' posts, but I am back. There is being loyal to a school you attended for three years, but then there is being loyal to the school that you grew up rooting for, attended for three years, and graduated from.

I was wearing Kentucky blue.

I caught the first half on the radio. It seemed like Kentucky was playing as their usual sub-par selves. Coach Brooks at halftime even said that we were failing to catch the ball, again, this week. I do not know what he said or did at halftime, but Kentucky came out with a vengeance. I saw them score a touchdown and then it went to commercial break. I went to do something for what I thought was 15 minutes max. I come back and there are two more scores on the board. It went from a boring average victory over a team that should have been run over to the blowout I was expecting.

I feel sorry for WKU. They were on the top of their game in the small leagues. They were the big boys. They wanted more money, more TV, more attention. They wanted big time football. Well, they are getting it. Unfortunately, they are no longer the big guys.

Give them a few years and they will step up.

As for Kentucky, I hope and pray that they can use that momentum going into conference play.
