I was wondering if there is any way to fix color banding (or whatever its called)

heres an example

I am using gimp btw

I just use the Smudge tool on those areas in Photoshop. GIMP should have a similar feature. 👍

If the entire sky has it, I tend to use the polygonal selection tool to grab as much as I can and apply a slight Gaussian blur. Obviously I avoid things like clouds, and it only works if the colour gradient is fairly smooth. Also, Photoshop :P

Like Mog mentioned, the smudge tool works; I use it the same way I would use my finger to blend pencil shading, use a fairly large size and repeatedly use quick back and forth motions in the direction of the gradient. It's a quick and very effective method 👍

GIMP actually has a pretty good tool/filter for stuff like this, called "Selective Gaussian blur". Depending on the image you're editing, you'll have to play around with it a little to get the right effect, however it's faster than using the smudge tool, in my opinion.

Here's an example: The first image has a ton of banding (or whatever it's called), while, with the second image, I've just used selective Gaussian blur across the whole image (which took 10 seconds) to make it look much more smooth:

Wauv - the difference is really big :-) . I think I'll try that on some of my photos. I am also using GIMP.

Gimp also has a repair tool, which works well with smaller areas you are trying to isolate. In combination with selective gaussian blur and smudge, these are all the tools you will need to fix color banding/posterization issues.
