Coming to terms with breaking up

Well, my girlfriend and I have decided that it's time to break up. Our relationship is causing more stress than happiness, we constantly argue over silly little things

I guess we were (and still are) a bit too young when we started. I'm 16 (turning 17 this year), she's about two months younger than me. We were 15 when we started, and I am sure we took it too seriously back then. Thought we knew what love actually was, and thought that we were made for each other.

Our first year anniversary is tomorrow, and while our relationship went pretty extremely well in our first few months, now we suffer from constant arguments. In fact, the only thing that I cannot tolerate is her inherent stubbornness, which I used to accept. She doesn't like me arguing with her or debating any of her points.

I guess everyone said that there's no such thing as love in our age group, we were too naive to believe it back then :dunce:

[/TYPICAL TEENAGE LIFE STORY]

Anyways to the point, this is the first time I'm officially breaking up with a girl. We've already discussed it a lot, and we are doing it in a civil manner. How do I actually go about this? It's stepping into the unknown, for me :nervous:

Don't dwell on it for one thing. Keep yourself preoccupied, put your own needs first, & do something that you enjoy.

Remember it's a high school relationship, so there's no point in grieving over this anymore than you need to, because to be honest, the odds were against you both being together this long at your age anyway.

👍 to McLaren.

My "serious" relationship when I was 16-19 ended on a sour note too. Looking back is was the best thing she ever did to me. You're young and have a bunch of fun to come being single. Breaking up sucks period, but once you get over the initial sting of it you'll see how happy you can be on your own. Good luck and don't get too down on yourself.

Thanks for the helpful advice guys 👍

And yeah, more than being sad about it, I feel that it's actually quite exciting to be single again. There's quite a lot to experience out there :dopey:

Depending on your and her's preference here's something to think about... As a couple you guys produce more harm than good to each other... The breakup doesn't have to be bad... You guys could just be better off as friends... I have a ex-girlfriend that i am still friends with today and one of my friends has the same thing to... Just all depends on how the breakup gos... But just don't burn bridges...

But just don't burn bridges...

There may be nothing more important written in the whole thread. High school relationships are hard at best for a variety of reasons but the better you handle the bad times the better off you'll be.
I'd dated my current girlfriend in grade 9 for all of a couple months. We agreed we were better off as friends and were all good for about a year and we started dating again. I'm now 21 and we are still together 4 1/2 years later.

Anyway all I'm trying to say is that you never know when how you handled something long ago may have future consequences. I remember being pretty pissed off when we "broke up" in grade 9 but I never said anything and was good about it. If I'd taken the other road I probably wouldn't be with her today.

Anyway don't worry too much although I know it seems like the world right now. Focus on the things you like to do and keep busy instead of sitting around where you have time to think about everything.

The breakup went ahead rather well, we laughed off most of it. Of course, constant arguments would not make anyone happy at all, so we decided that it would be best for us just to be friends.

We're keeping the friendship up. I don't really think we'll ever get back together again, but who knows what life will throw at you :boggled:

She will have a soft-spot in my heart since she is my first proper GF (however you define it :sly:)

Good stuff. I can't keep up friendships with ex girlfriends, it just gets weird. Especially when your best friend works in the most popular bar in town and asks her for ID every single time she wants a drink just to piss her off.
