Ok here is the competition it is the Lexus SC 430 vs. the XKR, the Mercedes SL500, Corvette, XLR, and Maserati Cambio Corsa. Fair right?

my opnion is pending, so happy voting

I just like the fact that Cadillac has a convertable again. Its been way too long! I am trying to convince my mom into buying one... she once had a pink caddy convertable. :D

What about the Aston Martin DB7 Valiante? Though, the Maserati look like it.

I'd take an Esperanto...or a Renesis Miata...

Hey wait, you posted a pic of a Miata! In the SL 500 pic, blue Miata.

I pick that...can I pick that? It's the least expensive of what's up there, probably most reliable and economical, and it's just as much fun. ;)

They have a newer SL500 than that. It would get more votes I bet.

The most sporty of these cars is the Maserati. So thats what I voted for.

I love the Jaguar and I really like the NEW SL500.

The Cadillac seems kind of cool, and I am sure its a very good car, but it hasnt gained my respect yet.

The Corvette is a little too grunty for this group of very refined cars. And its arguably as sporty as the Maserati if not more.

I have never liked the SC430 very much. But I wouldnt mind one! ya, ya.

XLR. I've been in one and well let me just say I love the car! Very nice.

Maserati. The others are nice, but you just can't beat that sound.

The Merc beats it for luxury, and the Jag comes close. The Corvette is the performance choice, but sucks inside. The XLR is just a detuned 'vette with a slightly better interior, and the SC430 is an overly-curvy, seemingly-fat luxo-barge...with its wig off.

The new SL500 has a V8 with 302hp. The SL55 has a Supercharged V8 with 493hp. BIG difference.

The SL55 AMG is as you say, but there are more 'standard' versions. Out of that lot, I think I would have the Lexus. But then I hate convertibles.

Oh, and MazKid, the word you're looking for is DB7 "Volante". :)

Although I've done absolutely no research on the topic recently, I believe that in the US, we have just one more 'standard' version, whereas in Britain, you have many more engines to choose from when purchasing an SL. I think we get the SL320, SL500, and SL55.

I think that's what we get. So the poll would have been more fair if the SL had been the NEW SL500

Indeed. And I voted for it based on the assumption that it was. I'm surprised you'd have the Lexus, Giles.

I don't really want any of those cars! Comes back to my not liking convertibles, which probably has something to do with me living in Scotland! I also have a real issue (especially at that price point) with convertibles whose roofs do not completely retract. I think it's nothing more or less than poor engineering - especially when you consider the new SL's tin roof.

Since the car advertised was not a new SL, I discounted it - my views on that generation of SL are well-known here. I quite like the look of the Lexus, and by all accounts they're very good cars.

These cars are too expensive and not practical.

But I like the Peugeot 206cc, Daihatsu Copen & Opel Astra cabriolet which have automatic folding roofs like the SL. Small and cute. The Astra's roof can even be opened by remote.(Hide behind a pillar and surprise people)

i voted for the maserati. in the united states it is a very different car to drive. it is italian and attractive. because I dont actually have to experience owning it (reliability and maintenance costs), i really dont care.

i also should say, the sc430 is amongst the 10 ugliest cars i have seen. i really think the japanese luxury cars still look very "japanese generic". I think the more expensive japanese cars have nothing on their competition in europe.

about the SL, it is the older all too common car. i see them on every block. i like things that are different. also, how come so many people are voting for it pretending its the new sl? there is a picture showing you its not...........

I get pissed off when people say some cars are not practical.
I bet you that most of these cars are only used for the weekend or a trip away, and that is what they are made for, along with poiseing (sp?) and driving (Some). Were you also saying that these are not pratical but the 206cc, Astra and Copen are?

I agree, the old one's everywhere. Strangely, I thought that he made a mistake with the picture and didn't intend to include a ten-year-old vehicle in comparison with vehicles like the XLR, which won't debut for several more months.

But hey - he mis-spelled something that wasn't even a word in the title of this thread, so I guess I shouldn't have made that assumption.
