I am unsure of the differences between versions of PS3 games sold in different countries. I am of course most interested in the answers for GT5/GT5P. Here are the issues I can think of

1 Language - Does the version shipping in each country only have the local language?

2 Region Encoding - Do I have to look for 'Region Free' games bought overseas or will all play anywhere?

3 NTSC/PAL - Using HDMI output has that difference gone away?

Thanks

As far as I know:

1) At this point, only in Japanese, I think.

2) There is no region Encoding (ps3).

3) NTSC/PAL: if you use HDMI, the output is the same. NTSC/PAL was/is an old CRT thing. HDMI is digital, so no worries there.

I hope it makes any sense and I hope I'm right.

:)

Thanks. Makes sense and I hope you are right too as I've just ordered GT5P from YesAsia :) Japanes dictionary anyone?

Games are games, so use trial&error and maybe there will also be some people on this forum who post screenshots with translated menus etc.

I don't think that GT5P will be completly in Japanese, that's rare. There is enough English involved to get you through the game. Just don't expect to understand every submenu in options or infos about car companys etc.

Simply put : You won't have a lot of trouble with Japanese games, might take a few day to get used to, but that's it...

EDIT : the rest is correct btw, no region codes so far and no problem with HDMI anymore

Neither problems with component cable as they allow up to 1080p. I'll have to try if Japanese NTSC games work with standard definition on my PAL TV :)

Im in the UK just ordered Japanese Prologue.

Im running on a CRT tv using a scart cable from ps3 to tv (pal).

Will that be ok?

I changed the Video Setting Output to "Standard (PAL)" on my PS3 and played a Japanese NTSC Game and the GT5 Prologue Demo: It worked fine.

Actually my TV doesn't accept 1080P over component ! Only 1080i. Well, that's my TV, but since it's a Sony, other Sony TV's might share my problem. Although HDMI is the better solution anyway ;)

Well, it depends. If your TV is not a 20 year old noname brand TV , then yes. It has to accept NTSC signals, otherwise you won't be able to play it in color.
But that's very unlikly. There is a 99% chance that you won't have any problems. If I were you though, I'd at least think of playing PS3 on a computer monitor. I mean, high def is high def, you know ;)

Cheers thanks for that, both of you.

My CRT is only a few years old so i imagine based on what you say it'll work.

A hdtv is on its way very soon but for the meantime im stuck with it.

Any way suffering and getting used to the 'standard' picture quality is only gonna make the HD switch even better.
