Component Monitor woes

After unsuccessfully trialling my PS2 with GT4 on a 768p HDTV earlier, I have recently received a new monitor with a component input, so I thought I'd try and get GT4 to work with it, not possible again it seems.

Composite works fine, and this monitor does accept an interlaced signal through component, so Component *should* work. It doesn't. All I get is a black screen, as if the PS2 wasn't even there, in race, out of race, menu screen, regardless of whether I use Y/Pb/Pr or RGB. The composite works in either mode, component doesn't work in either mode. The screen is a Dell 2407FPW, which despite being known for its problems, has been fine for me so far. Even on the LCD TV we have I was able to get a 480i image through component, but this screen won't display any image at all unless you use Composite. Any ideas?

Please don't shoot me for asking the obvious, but it's happened before.

You are actually selecting the input with the component cables, aren't you? Just hooking them up isn't enough, you may have to select the input.

Like I said, an seemingly obvious thing to do, but you'd be surprised.

Beyond that, the possibility exists that they are swapped around, i.e. wrong cable on the jacks, even if the colors match. There's no harm moving them around to check.

Does your sound system have audio when you boot the console? If not, then I'd suspect your cable set.

Do you see the initial PS2 screen, then it goes black on loading the game, or is it black always?

Lastly, there's no HD in the PAL game, although that shouldn't preclude component display. You'd do just as well to use S-Video, unless you're playing the NA NTSC game.

Lol yes I am thanks, but well done for checking the obvious! Would it give no picture at all if the colours we wrong? I don't see anything at all ever with component selected and attached. No menu screen, no nothing. No HD in the PAL version? Seriously? Oh well that sucks! Still, it'd be better to use Component even so, I ran the game on Composite in my Dell and compared to Component on the TV downstairs (480i or not!) it's rubbish. Better save up for a PS3 and get GT HD then! Talking of which, what's the regioning like for PS3s? Is it possible to buy a US console and a US game that can also run PAL games? Or are they still locked? I have this funny feeling I'll be saving time, money and lord knows what else If I buy a US version, no delay, no ridiculous cost, and I can get the 20GB version which they aren't selling in the UK anyway...

For now, the best thing I could suggest is S-Video instead of component. It's vastly superior to composite, and with HD being a non-issue, plenty capable of anything the game will display.

On the question of regions, PAL/NTSC, etc. I politely refer you to those forums where such matters are addressed. (Translation: I'm not real sure.):)

Right I'll try S-Video then. I've browsed around the Gt4 forums but haven't really found anything technical, only "I want this in GT5?" "What about these?"...
