Hi everyone.

I was surfing around the net when I tried opening iTunes and an error message appears, saying "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\...' Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again...(blah blah blah)" This happened to all of my other programs except AOL, Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader and My Computer.

I am unable to open the Command Prompt or my antivirus program, so it's really vulnerable right now.

I tried running an online virus scan from the Symantec website, but it has found nothing on my computer.

I need help! What should I do!? Thanks in advance :)

Look in the directory mentioned for the file and open it that way. also, check the shortcut paths.

That does sound like a virus, though. An un-friendly one...

meep. Very unfriendly. Might be an evvvvil trojan. Try using the 'find' feature and look for your programs. If you can't find them, then you definitely have an intruder alert.

I checked the path and it's good. I even went to the Program File, found the executable and double clicked on it, and it still came up with the same message.

I used the Search function and it can find the programs.

Darn, I don't want to reformat my hard drive again ...

Sounds like you need to reformat... I hate Trojans... (the virii)

:banghead: I hate reformatting but I'd recommend one too... you sound pretty close we could have a format party or better yet do an office space on our computers :grumpy:👍

Well, if it is a trojan, you should try an alternate virii scanner, like AVG (which is free), to double check. And if it is so, try and rid yourself of it, but if no turnout...reformat :(

The real problem is how did the virus even get onto your system?

You need to protect your system better.

I forget which virus that is. I had a few computers at work with it. It's a real pain to get rid of - I even reinstalled a few computers to save me the trouble. Basically it changes what "exe" files open with, so none of them work. Getting it to switch back is quite an ordeal.

Install a virus scanner ... if you can ... and get it to tell you which virus it is. Then go to Symantec's site and download the fix / remover tool.

That's an old virus, probably two or more years old.

i've got one for you guys, I cannot use my windows media player at all now, a trailer for a movie I didn;t even download is all it will play.....over and over until I close it, canl;t play, can;t watch movie clips, I checked the root path, and there is nothing added onto the end of wmplayer.exe, and I tried deleting it, it would not let me....has anyone had this before????

Format, reinstall. Be more careful about what you click on the web from now on. Do not open any files sent to you in email.

I have had 2 agressors (at least that I know of) on my computer. The netsky virus and the Yaha Worm. The main problem is it is hard to find out whether it is windows (OS Me. :yuck: ) messing up or something more sinister

You try clicking off of the "Media" tab on the top left of the WMP window? That way it won't connect to the internet when you boot the program up.

With Windows the most important thing is to be up to date on your patches always. Set Windows Update to automatically download and install new patches.

I found some loopholes for some of my programs. Yay! :D

I can run WinAmp, Microsoft Excel and Word right now. It's only possible if the file needs to be opened with that program. So like if it's a .doc file, I have to use that file to open the program (Word).

That's one way of getting around it, for now. I still can't open WMP or any other program.

I tried running my antivirus program again, but it's coming up with the same error message. Oh well, I'll reformat over the weekend.

Thanks guys! :)

ive got this virus on my computer everytime I got on the internet it would pop up this thing saying you computer might have spyware which thats common you see that all the time but it will automaticly start downloading i just gave up and i let it do it and now i cant get on the internet, games, and i cant do anything anytime i do it pops up saying this is infected with spyware then it wants me to remove it when i say no it automaticlay starts the remove software i lost like all my job files luckly i had that backed up anyone got any ideas

Download Ad-Aware 6.0 and Spyboy S&D and clear out any spyware on the computer, best thing to do would be format.

Well, if you think about it he's got so many things screwing up, if he formats he will get rid of everything, but I guess it's a larger step?

Why does everyone jump on the "OMG! Format now!" bandwagon? So, you have a virus. If you were running a decent residential scanner, it would've picked it up long before it done anything. And not all viruses are engineered to screw your computer. Virus does not always equal format, mmkay?

And spyware? Just run a spyware detection program to remove the junk.

Here's a quick thought, even though the results will take you a few hours. Go to www.answersthatwork.com, click on "task list". On you r computer, hit "Ctrl-ALT-Delete" and go to "processes" this gives you a list of all the programs running on your machine. Some are very necessary, others are not. Some of them will be your problem.

Use the alphabet on answersthatwork and compare the ones you find in your computer to the ones found on www.answersthatwork.com

After you've cleaned out the bad programs, and you've run the latest version of adaware (6.0) and restarted, go back through this process a few times.

NOw, as a further precaution, you can go to your "start" button, open the "run" command and type in "services.msc" this will give you a list of programs that start automatically when you load up your computer. As you trim this down to necessary and needed, you'll get more speed out of your computer.

For a good list of what those services are visit www.blackviper.com Spend two hours reading through it all. After you go through all this a handful of times (don't you love viruses that hide?) and get well into your 4th hour of doing it, you'll have a cleaner faster computer.

Now, invest $70 at mcafee.com and you'll be a much happier surfer.

Well, if you're running 2000/XP you can view your processes by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del and clicking on Processes (I think you have to click Task Manager then Processes on 2K). The other solution is to nab SysInternals' Process Explorer. It'll give you in-depth detail about each running process. Anything that looks suspicious, you can either Google or SARC it.
