Consider not only right track layout and length but also track width

Hi to all

Last night I tried few excellent circuits including Brno Circuit, Road America, Special Stage Route 11

I see that one of limitation of this Track Creator is certain spacing that has to exist between sections of the track so certain tracks will be hard to make. Track Creator itself starts with default width of 10 meters.

When speaking of World Tracks that we try to recreate here, they usually have an exact layout and most of them are very close with length as well…However driving on most of those tracks I couldn’t stop thinking that they feel a bit narrow

I guess most of track creators including myself started with default width of 10m and once the track is done it felt a bit too narrow.

So I suggest here that we not only try to have exact layout and the length of tracks but also we should come at least close with the width

(I believe PD made a good scaling of all of the World tracks in the game since at least to me driving on Silverstone, or Suzuka or Laguna Seca in GT6 feels authentic)

I researched a bit FIA regulations and I found following

- No straight must be longer than 2km
- Total circuit length is recommended to be less than 7km
- The track width foreseen should be at least 12 m
- Where the track width changes, the transition should be made as gradually as possible, at a rate not greater than 1 m in 20 m total width.
- The width of the starting grid should be at least 15 m
- This width must be maintained through to the exit of the first corner

Looked into some of the world racing circuits and found that most of F1 Grand Prix circuits are close to 15m in width or more

-Silverstone over 15 m
-Brno 15m
-Istanbul Park average width 15m
-Sochi 13-15m

So far I made one track inspired by Red Rock Valley Speedway, which I called Ultra Speedway

However I also made it only 10m wide so it felt a bit narrow

I’m going to redo it with 12m width and make it longer to be closer to (3.5-3.7miles) like some good F1 Grand Prix circuits (think Suzuka, Silverstone, Monza, Daytona Road layout)
By the way you can find my tracks here

Next project will be recreation of Sochi - again with 12m width

So please consider the right width of the track when creating world circuits

I can say that if i am recreating real world track i search also for width info. When i cannot find it i measure it by myself on google maps or in google earth.

I've made Brno circuit with correct width, just 15 m shorter, old Hockenheimring with 7 m width (based on measurenent of the back straight remains on the map (not sure if it's correct, but the narrow feeling of the track is as i remember from F1 games))

Good approach. Which makes me thinking I'll do my Sochi remake with at least 13 m

Absolutely to this thread.... I actually was thinking about this issue during my lunch break.

There should be a width specification in each of the track created and listed in this forum.

That's also a good idea. We should post track name, image of layout (maybe), track type (real/fictional/formerGT...), track theme (one of the four from the Designer), track length, track width and maybe short comment
There should be an index on each creator's page with all of this info so you don't need to open one's home page to find more

Look into my "workshop at the track info, in 2nd post. What do you guys think?

I took a look
Excellent. Exactly what we were talking about here
The only thing is it would be nice if you can have an sort of home page like an index page that always stays first. So when you update it with new tracks it stays top
Can this thread do that? Probably yes since there is a thread with all users workshops where index always stays on top
Anyone knows anything about this?

The track width seems to account for the grass on both sides as well (10m in the app = 6m tarmac + 2m grass on right + 2m grass on left). Make sure you consider this when choosing the width.

There is also the problem of not being able to change width for each section.

Also, if your track has a tight corner, you might need to reduce the width so you can reproduce the corner accurately.

Wow! I did't know that. But it makes sense now when you mentioned it.
The issue with reducing width just for some corners: I'm afraid cannot be done. You select the track width before even starting to make it and it is a constant value for the whole track. I think.
I would like if someone proves me wrong though.

This is what I meant, it's buried deep in the GT6 manual on the GT website, so it's understandable that not everyone is aware of it

Creating Tight Corners

i187T1pXSiJTp.jpg

To create tight corners, such as hairpin bends, start by creating an ordinary corner of roughly the type you want by drawing the track line accordingly. This section of track can then be converted into a "tight corner". To do so, tap and hold the section of track you wish to convert, then select "Decrease Corner Radius" from the menu which appears. You are not able to place items in sections of track that have been converted to tight corners, but you are able to draw much tighter turns than usual.

To return a section of track that has been converted into a tight corner back to normal, tap and hold the section, then select "Increase Corner Radius" from the menu which appears. Please be aware that this action cannot be performed if the section contains a turn that is too tight for a normal section of track. If this is the case, adjust the track line so that the turn is less tight, then try again.

I dont think this is how it works, coz on my 7m wide old Hockenheimring there would be only 3m of tarmac path which is impossible to drive. And i didnt have the feel it is that much narrow. Well, you can try it, its in my community page which you will find in my thread through my signature.
