Corza's Cockpit

Hey guys

I've been lurking these forums for quite a while now. Familiar with most peoples cockpits and pretty amazed at what people have come up with. I think the PVC cockpits that have been built are brilliant, such a strong and lightweight material with minimal tool requirements.

I went down a different path though, mostly due to being able to get away with leaving my rig in the living room.

The design has changed slightly since these pics were taken. The shifter table has been moved closer to the seat.

I still have to take it apart again to paint all the steel and finish the red gum but overall it has proven to be a pretty sturdy design.

Thanks to all those people who have influence my design without knowing!

Geometry looks good. Wood looks like it came from 17th century war ship :) Gz! for getting the cockpit finished.

Thanks, too bad my November deadline turned out to be arbitrary.

Also the wood looks a lot cooler from the other side, still has natural edges, just the bark removed. It was all cut from one slab, so none of the pieces are square either. Made it very hard to find locations for the holes, basically had to do it by eye and drill through the hardwood and steel in one go with the work clamped together.

Thought I may as well update this with some new shots.

I'm looking for ideas for a dead pedal too if anyone has any advice.

Is this the type of dead pedal you're talking about. The reason it's not bolted to anything is I'm still doing minor adjustments to the pedal angle. Waiting till GT5 to see how the pedals work I'm still off a little on the angle. More pictures are on "My Profile"page:

This brought to you by that "Crazy opelgt:crazy:1969 guy"

Thanks robulus, I did the welding myself. I borrowed a gassless mig, it was my first time welding. It wasn't too hard, grinding and cutting was much scarier.

That's what I meant Opel, my idea at this stage is to get a piece of aluminium sheet and bend it over at about 90deg and screw it directly into the timber. Not sure if I will be able to bend the sheet nicely though. I imagine 3mm would be thick enough.

Thats a nice simple design Mars, maybe I should get some offcuts of Redwood and do it that way.

Haha yeah its a tank. My gf can't even slide it with the provided carpet.

Yeah there's a bit of steel bar in it. But I'm guessing it's pretty rigid!

wow, the wood looks great! I'm not laughing because it looks funny, but just because the wood looks like a wood that is worth much more than what would be supposed to go a DIY rig :D

Great work!

Each one of the three pieces of hardwood is heavier than all the steel used in the project. It surprised me after so many years of only working with MDF, pine and Chip board.

Haha yeah, I try to think of it as money invested to keep the rig lounge room worthy in the eyes of the gf.
