Could car failures be implemented? (not crash damage)

Dear Mr. Yamauchi,

Car damage has been asked by many but what about car failures? Problems like engine blowouts, tyre punctures, overheating, electrical failures happen a lot in racing (in this years' Le Mans, the Toyota #7 retired because of electrical problems). The difference is that these problems can happen without any crashing; the car can stop working even when driving cleanly. Of course, this feature could be turned on or off.

Good question. There's a few PC games I've played that include this as a toggleable option. Grand Prix 4 comes to mind. If you shifted poorly or drove the car too hard it would blow your motor, you could get punctures, etc.

The only problem was the frequency that it would happen. Which was just far to much. So I would keep it off.

Quantity would be the concerning factor. And would each vehicle have realistic reliability? I'm sure manufacturers won't like that.

Yes exactly. It would have to be equal across the board to appease the manufacturers I would think. The problem I had with GP4 was if you took a lesser team you pretty much couldn't finish a race event without a major issue. It was stupid. I wanted to win in an Arrows or a Jordan but that wasn't going to happen with the failures turned on

Me likes this. Can relate to the GT Auto thread I mentioned about servicing your cars and making sure they're in working order.

Back in Formula One Championship Edition this feature made racing so unpredictable. Once I was sitting quite far behind Schumacher in the race, thinking how I was going to catch him. Then massive cloud of smoke burst out of his car, granting me victory. :D

I've thought about this in the past and the randomness of it done in a basic manor would be too frustrating I think. However, having car failures based on your driving is a definitely positive step. Punctures from too much kerb or offroading, overheating after a trip through the gravel or grass blocks the radiator, overreving, blown turbos etc. Good possibilities in there but the balance needs to be right, and of course, it has to be optional.

I think it would be a very cool feature. I have been thinking about this a lot in the past. Also in tuning options should be implanted stuff like a bigger radiator or a bigger intercooler. And there should be a working engine temperature gauge. If you drive a poorly tuned car (for example full turbo but no engine work done) too fast, the engine should break down.
And every time you drive a Lancia or Alfa Romeo, it should break down after a couple of kilometers. Not a fixed amount of kilometers, but a variable. :D

How many car companies would NOT allow their (albeit already poor, but... ;) ) image to be further tarnished... ;)

I think one easy way to do this could maybe be the colour of smoke coming from the exhaust.

White Smoke, Gray smoke and Blue smoke = Uh oh , time to head to GT Auto and diagnose or else breakdown mid race.

Black smoke = Burning too much fuel ok cool not too much of a problem but can affect fuel economy during the race. Off to GT Auto for sensor cleanings and filter changes.

I think this would be particularly fun for used cars. Like the problems just start coming consecutively instead of just changing oil and boom no more worries.

It could give an obligation and more focus to GT Auto in that YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR otherwise....:scared:

Same to me, was chasing Montoya in my first ever rain race, and suddenly, his rooster tail got a lot larger, and the USA driver was on the podium! With his first F1 race win, in any game.:)

It's slightly amusing that some on this thread are not into this idea based on the fact that such car issues would be 'annoying' - that is kind of the point.
I agree that it's the point and it's an extra added level of realism. However the frequency to which it would happen in GP4 with the teams that weren't Ferrari, McLaren or Williams made the lesser teams unplayable for anyone who wanted to do a full race season in real time without blowing a motor (or something equally crippling) in practice, qualifying and the race.

I suppose that is true. It's a problem that is very similar to FPS weapon stoppages - hardly any games have it because it is frankly a complete nightmare. A game 'America's Army' had stoppages, which would increase in frequency in desert / rain conditions, and if you went full auto too much. But even that had a trade off between realism and sanity.

With driving it could be more about punishing bad engine care, going off racing line (punctures), aggressive short shifting etc... So I think it's actually easier to do realism in a driving sim without it being too intrusive to careful driver.

That's the extreme part which PD should try not to fall into. A simple possibility equation in the game's code would do well, with added factors to influence it like driver carelessness.

As long as it's an option, for short online races, I don't want someone to blow up in a five Lap race, but in an endurance, that's part of the system, DAR SHE BLOWS!!

And then there's rally where damage and reliability problems are part of it. ;) That is, if PD gives us true rally stages in a future update or GT7. :D
