Whilst walking along the beach near Chichester Marina I heard a plane that I thought was a Spitfire. It came overhead and I knew from the wings that it wasn't, the wings were squared off (see pictures below) so I thought it was a P-51 Mustang. I've just got back and googled it but the tail of the plane isn't right to be a Mustang. And now I can see it on a big computer screen it doesn't look much like either of them, from the bottom picture the cockpit looks too long to be a single seater.
Can anyone identify it?

I'm not too knowledgeable about older war planes, but that looks like a Grumman TBF Avenger to me, I may be wrong though.

^ Looks like it is but it is missing the rear ball turret as far as I can see. Is there any way the first 4 pictures could be made larger?

It could be a later TBM avenger.

Actually the wings seem to be wrong as well. Those are dead flush with the bodywork at the back. The Avenger had wings that faced the center point both front and back and the wing got thinner as you went out.

I couldn't find anything closer either. I originally thought about that Douglas dive bomber, but their wings are rounded at the tip. Love the WWII planes. 👍

SNJ, going by the markings (as pointed out in the thread haitch40 cited).

A Mustang sounds nothing like a Texan, by the way; the only commonality is "loud piston engine". Radials have a distinctive note all their own.

BTW I just happen to have been watching an AT-6 flying around a bit this past Saturday, here.
