DareDevil.
Last Friday evening as a Valentines day adventure, my wife and I attended the opening night showing of Daredevil, starring Ben Affleck. While not disappointing, it wasnt Spiderman. To compare it to the first Batman would be acceptable. While both stories were very well written, both required a bit of acceptance that was hard to swallow.
One disappointing aspect was the level that Computer Gaphic Imaging has improved, and the producer took advantage of it a bit too much. While ILM can make dinosaurs live, the CGI team on this movie apparently had a tough time making Daredevil do flips. The scene in the church with the organ pipes had suspended a few physics rules to exist. These two hundred pound men jumping from pipe to pipe, launching themselves huge distances. I agree that this was from a comic book, and a fantasy, but isnt this supposed to be a live action enactment of the film? The few short scenes that showed Daredevil running around the city were mildly stretched.
The soundtrack matched well with the dark mood of the film. If any of you have seen Ladyhawk you can understand how a soundtrack can speak to the current top 40 scene, but not to the movie. My thought was that the music matched the mood of the movie, but not the action or emotion of the characters. For instance, one scene has Matt Murdock reflecting in sorrow on his actions. In the background the there was rage filled music. Only a small note of dissatisfaction on this part.
Perhaps my biggest disappointment was the Bar fight scene. Much like the final fight scene in Batman, they took the dark mood of the film too far. Very tough to see the action, and follow movements of the characters.
Now that the bad parts are discussed, I do have to say that I did enjoy the film. Jessica Garner did an excellent job as Elektra. She managed a very accurate portrayal of an assassin. It was not well shown in the film that she was an assassin, but rather an exceptionally well trained martial artist. I fear this will adversely affect the sequel should she be included. I was disappointed that she didnt make it through the film. I do know that in the Comic book she does die and is reincarnated but to kill her off this quick was not likely a good plan. Michael Duncan Clarke did an acceptable job as the Kingpin. Not the actor I would have picked, as in the comic book, he is a different body type, and different race altogether. Those thoughts aside, MDC as the Kingpin did not have an adverse affect on the film. Bullseye was done very well. The ego, the accuracy, the inventiveness, every piece of his character was exceptionally done. Including the scene in the ending credits.
Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. I think that there are other actors out there who could have bone a far better job. Ben Affleck didnt do well in the tortured soul aspect of the film. I dont think his abilities include the emotionally torn person. In the sequel Id like to see Russell Crowe as the lead role, if they can afford to hire him that is. If they cant get him, Ewan Macgregor would likely do the job very well.
Overall, Id give the movie a passing grade. It portrayed the Daredevil character as a real world entity, but missed the mark on aspects that could have made it a super movie.
As a final note, gotta love Murdocks hair.
