Ive seen several posts around the internet pertaining to this and none of them are very helpful, also the official explanation from Sony's website isn't that great either.

Basically, when you use the Backup Utility, it will back up the "Game Data" (Some DLC may have to be re downloaded, pictures and also full games. It also backs up the PS1 and PS2 game saves, so you don't need to buy an adapter to transfer those.) The only important thing that doesn't transfer in this manner is the actual game saves (And I don't know for sure because i didn't have any, but movies that have been downloaded from PSN might not transfer either.)

I'm assuming everyone has like a 4gb thumb drive or something like that laying around. So before you start the back up process, go through your
"Save Data Utility (PS3)" and copy all of the saves you want to keep onto the thumb drive.

Now, you will most likely run into a DRM protected game save, the only way to transfer these is to buy a PSN+ membership (you can cancel the renewal fee's later) and upload the saves to the "Cloud". If you decide your game saves are worth the fee, after you upload your saves, you have to wait 24 hours until you can download it onto your new HDD.

You will either need an external HDD that is formatted to FAT32, or an ipod large enough to fit all of the data you are going to Back up. I used an ipod Classic 120gb.

Steps:
(If using an FAT32 formatted external drive skip to step 2 )

1. If you are using an ipod, make sure you have "Disk Use" enabled on your device. This can be found in your itunes when the device is synced to your PC.

2. Use your thumb drive and make, PS3 > UPDATE folders within it. Then download the Latest System Update and transfer it into the UPDATE folder on your thumb drive. (Check for an update on your original HDD in your PS3 also, just to be safe.)

3. Go under, System Settings > Backup Utility. Choose the Back Up option and the Device you want to put the data on.
(Depending on how much data you are backing up, it will take awhile. To back up 75gb it took about 2 hours and 45 minutes.)

4. After it has finished backing up. You can remove your HDD and put in the new one. Start you PS3 with your USB drive that has the System Update Data in it. Follow the directions and it will format the HDD and then install the System Data from the USB onto the PS3.

5. Now after making a user, you can go back to the Back Up Utility and Restore the data onto the new HDD. It will format the HDD again, and then start the Restore. (This will roughly take the same amount of time it took to Back it up.)

6. Once it finishes it will have another user named User* . This is "your" original user from the original HDD. DO NOT DELETE IT, use it.

7. You are basically done now, all that's left is to link your account information and copy the Game Saves from the USB drive to your PS3.

I hope this helps, any questions just post. If this was stickied.... i would be honored.
