Datsun 510 Thread

This thread is to pay homage to one of the greatest cars built, the Datsun 510.

A quick question to get the ball rolling: What is your favorite engine swap for the 510?

I like the SR20DET engine swap

1. What is a FJ20DET?
2. I was watching Sports Car Revolution on SPEED TV, and they had a drag 510 with a 350 dropped in it, it was making 400hp

In my opinion, it is stupid to put these types of engines in Datsuns. If you want a small block powered car, buy a Chevy or Ford.

And Viper, is the FJ20DET similar to the CA18DET? Because both engines are quite old, and I thought they might be from the same era.

I like the idea of putting American engines in Japanese cars, you get get the power and the light weight body. Of course, you ruin the natural balance of the original car, but coolness factor is maximum IMO.

Anyway, Datsuns are cool.

A 350 is the obvious, no-brainer choice for a beat up 510 with a trashed engine. (I know this is a common swap for 240Z's) I dont think I could bring myself to do that to a clean example, though. How about a turbo 3.8 v6 from a grand national? I have never heard of this being done before, but I think it might be absolutely wild. It's still kind of light, and if a 350 can fit into a 240Z, then a 3.8 must be able to fit into the 510 (and I know they can put out 400 hp, easy :D). I'm gonna go look up weight specs right now.

OK......yours doesn't count...... just kidding. Actually, a Grand National powered 510 wouldn't be that bad of an idea.

And turbocharged you say? You may have something there!

Oops! You meant Japanese engines? Well, I dont know much about Nissan engines but the S15 engine seems like a wise coice (SR20DET??) . You get balance, and not a stupid fast-car, but good all around.

And the Grand National engine weighs ~375 lbs. I have no good resource to find the weight of the 510 engine, however.

Not at all, I was just kidding. Any engine swap is valid. And yes, the SR20DET is a good choice (my favorite, in fact).

An s15 SR20DET swap would probably be too complicated, but I've seen a few s13 and s14 SR20DET swaps into 510's and they were pretty badass. I'd say the SR or CA18DET would be ideal.
I'll take an SR-powered 510 in blue please. :)

To be honest, no matter what engine you choose it's gonna be a lot of work. Almost everything has to be fabricated or adjusted to fit correctly. It can also get quite expensive with the Nissan engines.

im thinking about buying a 510, and dropping a 350 in it, the stroking it to a 383, and maybe a supercharger

you can get a 510 pretty cheap, and 350's are a dime a dozen, and i could do the rebuild myself, and have it stroked for a couple of g's

then you have potent sleeper, and i think they make kits to swap a 350 in, and even if they dont, ill just fabricate it myself

Just make sure to paint it orange :D

nah, the FJ20DET is totally different engine to the CA18DET, same concept though double overhead turbo inline 4

Thanks. Man, why can't I remember what cars came with the CA18DET? I think the Pulsar GTi-R came with it, but that's about it.

earlier S13 silvias came with the CA18DET
the GTiR came with a SR20DET

also the very poverty pack R32's came with a CA18 and early RS13's (thats where the name "180sx" originally came from)

Oh, I was wondering why there were 180SX's in Japan. Man that must suck to have a 1.8 liter engine in your Skyline.

the 180sx was originally only suppose to have the CA18, but because they were fitting SR20's to S13's they figured (and public damanded) they fit the SR20 to the 180sx but didnt change the name because there already is a 200sx

That's why you hardly ever hear about the CA18DET: It is Nissan's forgotten engine.

true, i do see a fair few CA18DET silvia in australia, they go cheap

Hey, have you seen Tod Kaneko's 510? That thing is awesome (even if it did have a rotary). I was thinking about buying a Datsun. But I knew I would have spent WAY too much money on it:) .

If I had to stay JDM, I think the 2.4L out of a toasted 240Z with a pair of side-draft Webers, cam, and exhaust. Along with that a 5 speed of some sort. Top the whole thing off with a Quaife LSD.

Now I think, due to weight A Ford 289, built to Shelby specs with a Holley 650 Carb, and tri-y headers, in front of a Tremec 5-speed. Out back a 9-inch rear end with posi-traction and a set of 3.20 final drive.
