Difference between 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive?

Actually they are different.

"It's semantics. 4WD typically describes a system geared toward off-road use, perhaps incorporating a low range and a mechanical link among all four wheels. All-wheel drive suggests an always engaged system not tailored for the woods, often incorporating viscous or electronically controlled couplings or differentials that route power to the nondominant axle only as needed."

Well, it used to be said that 4WD was a vehicle that could be "put" into 4WD and there is a set power distribution between the 4 wheels that doesnt change.

AWD used to be described as a constant use of all 4 wheels, where the power distribution was constantly being adjusted as the car travels over different degrees of traction and weight transfer.
