Digital Cameras

Hi
I'm getting a new digital camera, and i've come up with these 4 as possible buys:
1. Olympus MJU300
2. Pentax Optio S
3. Panasonic D-Snap
4. Canon Digital IXUS II

The Olympus seems the best on features, but i was told by a friend that their xD memory cards are "uncompatible old junk".
So the Pentax Optio S was my next choice, its small, light and looks good as well..

The Canon doesnt have as much Optical Zoom as the others (only 2x)

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with these cameras?

Or any other good camera's similar to these ones for around $650-$800 range..

thanks
Tharaka

1. Olympus are very good in the digicam market at the moment. I have a Camedia C-750UZ on order at the moment. Strong optically and with good digital features. The xD cards are very good. High data transfer rates make for low-power consumption when the file is being written to the card, and reduced shot-to-shot delay. They're very small though, so take care not to lose them. Also, buy the Fuji xD cards - they're identical but 15% cheaper.

2. I'm not convinced by Pentax's digital offerings. I think it's fair to say that they're being left behind in the camera markets at the moment.

3. I wasn't aware that Panasonic even made cameras.

4. Canon make excellent cameras. Their lenses are very good and they manage to maintain commonality of controls across all their products, which means it's easy to move from one model to the next insofar as you don't need to relearn the controls.

the red one?? :)

ive been thinking about the DSCP8, but sony camera's are a hell of a lot more expensive than most other cameras...

I have a Sony DSC-P10 (5MP) that I payed $500 for. It's tiny, make big pictures, and has a few nice features. I also got (two) 256MB sticks so I can shoot roughly 130 pictures at full quality without even switching the stick.

I like Sony because they make good electronics. The camera works without question and the buttons are intelligently arranged.

I also like Canon because they make good cameras. I'm not a big fan of Olympus, but if you like them go right ahead. I would stay away from Fuji (their electronic ability frightens me), Panasonic (rather low end if you ask me), Kodak (they make good film, it stops there), Pentax (old school), and Minolta (low end cameras). Nikon is another quality camera manufacturer, but their digital cameras have a ways to go.

I have a Minolta SLR and it's awesome. I couldn't ask for more, yet. Eventually I'll upgrade, but for my amateur photography it's great. Can't say I know anything about their digitals, though.

Same here. Love it - but it's almost too small, I'm always afraid I'm going to lose it!

Ha ha, yeah. And it does make the buttons rather small. I still enjoy it very much, though. Especially after using our P7 that we have at work and being able to appreciate all the huge upgrades they made in the layout.

The arrow pad with the center button used to be like a directional pad / rocker thing so when you'd go to hit the center button you might arrow over or something. FRUSTRATING. The P10 buttons are so much better.

That's understandable! I can't imagine that little thing being that way.

At the top-end, yes. However, the Coolpix 900-series have stood at the top of the non-SLR digitals (in Europe at least) for a while now.
