Disc read error ((inconsistency))

i have search the forums, played with the laser distance. Gt4 plays once in a long while. most of the time its a disc read error. usually its either totally dead or alive, or usually alive, not barely alive. is this anything special. just delete this thread if its annoying.

Mine did that within 3 days of gettin the game. It turned out my PS2 was full of dust and was running poorly. All you have to do is pull the little caps on the bottom off and ake the srewws out. Then dust the inside out with a can of air and a vacuum.

Well, I just bought a new slim PS2, and mine freezes when I try to do a race. It's not the disc, either. They're both in great condition. Do any of you have an idea on what the problem might be?

How long have you been playin it before that. The slim PS2 overheats easily but thats like after 8 hours of play. You sure your disc doesen't have any major scratches or it just may be dirty.

Exceptionally clean disc (I'm a freak about those things.)

The system couldn't have overheated. GT was the 3rd game I played when I took it out of the cellophane. 10 minutes tops. The next day it worked fine.

Then thru the rest of the week, it was on again/ off again with the freezing issue. It's only GT that does it.

I got Soul Calibur 3 the day it came out, and it plays like a dream. Just today is was trying to play GT4, and I got frustrated w/it, so I popped in SC 3, and it works fine.

There's something wrong with GT, and I have no idea what it is. The lens in the console is fine, no dust, with no overheat. The disc is practically spotless, and it's the only one with a problem.

Can you sense some frustration?

Wow I dont have clue what it could be. My only theory is the GT games are hard to read for the PS2 for one reason or another. My PS2 is on its last legs after being played 3-10 hours a day every day for almost 3 years. So every once and awhile I have to take it a part and dust it out and it works again. I do notice of the games I have GT4 is always the first to go. It even stops working before a very badly scratched copy of Socom 2 I got from a friend goes. My copy of GT4 is in great condition also but for whatever reason it always craps out first.

Edit: I were you I probably would've broke somethin by now.

I Have the same problem.
It's so annoying!

Although, I read somewhere just before GT4 came out that it might not run smoothly on some PS2's Because of the massive Graphics Engine and high power usage (Makes the game hard to read) that could contribute to GT4.

I doubt that this is true or not as whether there is actually any difference in power usage between different PS2 games but oh well.

Also, has anybody ever had this problem: It scratches extremely easy?
All my games are nearly perfectly new condition even when i've been playing them for over 2-3 years.
But when I took GT4 out; brand new too, It was like scratched all over in less than a week? I even took extra care with the disc!

A bit offtopic, but 8 hours is not true. Famine used the slimline for 444 hours and nothing happened: Click

Actually, I was too tired after hockey training last night, so it's still on. That's 456 hours now.

hopefully those morons learned something from their mistakes with the PS2 and wont let them happen with the PS3.

i press restart about 25 times to play. :banghead:

Lo!

I don't have the patience for 25 resets. I'd probably just pop something else in.

*About the whole overheat deal: My slim can cook an egg after about 8+ hours, but from Famine's 156hrs non-stop ps2 escapade, methinks their built to withstand such usage.

I think I saw a slim with a fan on it somewheres on the internerd, but I can't remember where for the life of me!

If any of you see one, please let me know. I was looking for one a while back, but I don't think they exist.

Edit:

May have been a custom job.

A few key facts about my 464 hour PSTwo.

One: It's silver. This probably has nothing to do with it.
Two: It's located on the very top of the unit, with nothing but 5 feet of air above it until the ceiling. This allows it LOTS of room to convect and radiate heat away.
Three: It's winter here. Last night it was -2 Celsius outside and no more than 10 degrees inside until the heating clicked on at 6.45am. I wouldn't try the same thing in summer.

I did keep taking temperature readings from the case - I'm a scientist, so I have all sorts of freaky apparatus to hand. The disc side barely registered a change from room temperature. The component side didn't get much over 35 degrees. The radiator strip ran up to 40 degrees at its peak.

I think just keeping it well-ventilated is the key, to be honest.

thats pretty hardcore famine :scared:

i guess ill play metal gear 3 for a bit..try to beat it on extreme...damn does the story ever SUCK in that game...and the ending ever more so...

gameplays good though so i play.

Silver?? is that a custom job? or did you happen to buy it that way??

Silver PS2s were the last widely available model of the old style PS2 and, I imagine, have the least amount of components inside and thus less things that will contribute or retain heat.

My GT4 disc has an invisible scratch that results in red stopwatch crashes at the end of any race, possibly caused by the first generation PS2 it runs in which makes disturbing clicking noises when booting up. However the same disc-read errors happen in a brand new ps2, so I will have to replace both the game and machine one day :(

At least I can still play the game and have a good drive, although not being able to progress any further or play back replays for PhotoMode is somewhat annoying...

:grumpy: things i miss out on.... the Silver PS2 i mean :indiff:

Quick question, are you using your PS2 on it's side, or laying flat on the table?

I have a PSTwo, my kid brother also has a PSTwo. It got warm at times, but never hot. Even during the summer.

No. Silver PSTwo, not PS2. I bought it three weeks ago.

PS2s have no known overheat issues, so if it were a PS2 I wouldn't even mention it. And of course the PS2 doesn't have the radiator strip I mentioned.

Crunch_Monkey - Available in all good games shops, and a couple of rubbish ones too. £10 more than the black PSTwo, but I already have a black one - it's my NTSC-J machine and I don't want to confuse them.

:knock on wood: For the most part I haven't had a problem with a PS2 disc but when it comes to the disc for my ARmax or Sharkport it becomes a monumental task. Things that have worked are...

- Puting the unit vertically.
- Remove everything except for the vid and power cable then restart.

Even though it's not PS2 discs I'm having a problem with it's still something that may work with your PS2.

i bought one a few years ago to go with my hi fi gear. my whole system's sony silver :D

that's interesting famine, i think the longest i have had mine running, [it's not slimline], is about 100 hours.. nothing happened, i just figured i'd better turn it off for a while...

interesting also is that i have been playing gt4 everyday since the day it came out, and never had a problem, like many of my friends.. perhaps it's region specific...

i traded in for another pre-played copy and it seems to be working fine! it worked 4 times in a row, failed once, then worked 2 more times! and im playing

i hope all is well from now on..ill keep testing again.. :nervous:

I have an old thick PS2. GT4's never frozen, the PS2's, never overheated, and the only time the PS2 froze was when i was fighting the last boss in Ratchet and Clank 2. It froze, i lost data, and i stopped playing that.
But i've left my PS2 on for over 2 weeks. Nothing's ever happened. It feels a bit warm, but no way hot.

Update:

It was specifically one car. An orange 350z. It only freezes when I use that car. And as for the overheat....poor ventilation. That's all.

i have also disc read problems sometimes...i think it's because i used a cheat disc days ago. but sometimes the ps2 doesn't want to read the disc (only after restarting it 25 times) but now everything works fine:confused:

maybe i have some dust problems. i'm going to check it soon i think so i can fix the problem, otherwise i need to buy a new disc...

I haven't had any problems with disc read errors yet. My PS2 is only 2 years old and I play 2 hours per week during school weeks and about 3 to 5 hours a day during the vacation. I think older PS2s tend to have more disc read errors than newer ones and slimline PS2s overheat easily.
