Do you drive Premium or Standard?

Reading through a lot of the post here in these forums I get the impression that a lot of people are driving Standard cars. Which I initially find surprising. I myself will go out of the way to stick to the Premimum cars because I exclusivley drive all my sims from the cockpit view (and have do so for the past 12 years). I'm a former PC sim enthusiast that got into Sim racing to try and replicate the thrill of actually sitting behind a powerful machine. And so I began using a FFB Steering wheel and pedals on the early NASCAR sims and can't imagine driving any other way.

For all intents and purposes I've completely ignored the Standard cars in GT5 and have spent 99% of my money on Premium cars (with only two exceptions for Standard cars I needed to complete some of the early series).

To me nothing compares the thrill of feeling like I'm sitting behind the wheel and to make the illusion complete I HAVE to have a cockpit view and my FFB wheel. Driving any kind of racing simulator with a standard controller is something I will never do.

Am I alone? Am I some sort of sim snob? How many of you prefer the Premimum cars for the same reason? Do most of you drive with controllers from behind the car where the difference between standard and premium cars is immaterial?

Just curious....

I'm driving with bumper view so standard or premium dont matter. And even most of the standard dont look bad on replay etc..

I'm racing everything honestly, premium/standard for me it dont change anything.

I drive more standards than premiums, I know I own at least 100 more standards and find more of the standard cars more desirable then some of the premium cars.

I drive whatever car I want to :) If the car is offered in both and I'm not real picky about trim level or specific packages, I'll go with the premium.

Matter of preference really. If you prefer the cockpit view, of course you'll stick to premiums. I tend to stick with cars that offer a good hood/roof view. Mainly for the sense of speed and a better sense of where my front tires are.

Heh. I like 'em both. :) Having the cockpit view of a premium car is nice, but the truth is I do my best driving with the roof cam on. Plus, if I were to ignore all the standards, I'd be bored with GT5 by summer. I like variety. :dopey:

This 👍

I use a wheel, so why would I need to see my hands and wheel in front of me as well as the ones on screen?
But hey, that's just me.

I love the premium cars and standard but the premium cars are more of my taste. I love to admire my favorite cars like the r8 and see the inside.

I don't really understand the fixation with premium cars. So they have a bit more detail and you can use cockpit view. Not enough of an advantage to me. But then I learned to race in bumper cam mode way back in GT2-3 and don't intend on changing anytime soon, so I really don't care. I buy the car I need to do the race and never even look to see if it is Standard or Premium...

Also, I don't really see how anyone can drive the X2010 in the rain, at night, at Sarthe in cockpit mode. I can't see a thing when I look in on my Bspec guy doing it!!

You don't need to look to see if it's standard or premimum. It would be obvious depending on where you bought it. If you bought it in the new dealership area it's premimum, if you bought it in the used car database it's standard.

Soooo if you are a Premium snob you can never buy a used car? Unlikely and not even worth considering.

I have almost 100 cars at the moment and almost exactly half of those are standard cars. But only 2 or 3 of those are ones I bought. The other 47 are cars I won. The opposite is true of the premium cars. 90% of those I bought.

So I have an equal mix of both but I won't drive the Standard cars unless I absolutely have to, so I spent my money on the Premiums. I simply don't enjoy driving from the roof or the bumper. I need a proper cockpit view to even bother with a sim like this.

Now, don't take this as negative mark against GT5. On the contrary, many of the standard cars are nice to look at and I enjoy seeing them in the races. And I'm perfectly happy with the selection of Premium cars there are. I just brought this up to see if anyone else was enjoying this game as much as me by focusing soley on the Premium selection of cars.

Likewise, I don't mind using Premium or Standard models. When racing competitively I use bumper cam but it's always nice to take a nice practice run on a certain circuit in a Premium car with cockpit view. Some Standards look "below standard" but others look pretty sharp. I admire the quality and detail of the interior views of the Premiums but at the same time I enjoy the wide selection of Standards available and the uncertainty of when specific models will appear in the UCD.

When racing for time and position, I use bumper cam so it doesn't matter which.
When driving around for fun (the Ring 24 Hrs for ex), I use cockpit view so only premium there.

My standard side of the garage (the list) has 500 or so cars and my premium side has like 60-70 cars. So I find whenever I'm looking for a car I go straight to the standards.

I like to race without the HUD on(especially during endurance races) so I use premium cars to pay attention to my speed and RPM's. This would be quite difficult if I used a standard car with no HUD. Nothing beats cockpit view in an LF-A though!

I try to stick to Premiums as well, but there are some races where you have to drive standards. (FGT as one example)

Premium's more, but only because my favourite cars are Premium's, have lots of standards though, I'm not so bothered either way, standards aren't that bad of a quality.

Agree. I thought the driving wheel would de perfect for the bumper cam because of this. Or a hood cam (not roof cam). You shouldn't see two wheels when you are playing, so cockpit view with Driving wheel just dont make sense.

I'm sticking ti premmiums as much as I can. Bumper cam is just so 2004.
Nah, really, I've gotten used to cockpit view ever since GT5:P and I don't feel very comfortable in anything else, so I won't drive a standard car unless I absolutely have to. My preffered cars (Super GT/JGTC) are available as premiums, at least partially, so it's not even a big deal :D

I need a proper cockpit view to even bother with a sim like this.

Why is that? The cockpit view is just as unrealistic as either of the other two views.

With the inability to turn your head to see through the corner and an eye level seemingly replicated from a 5' 4" Japanese driver, the driver's seat view in GT5 is untenable to me. I find the roof/hood cam to be a far more realistic view of the track than any other.

I'll admit that I'm terribly spoiled by my TrackIR. Driving a sim/game without it feel absolutely archaic.

Cockpit view doesn't determine what car I drive, as I prefer Bumper-Cam. My choice between the two models boils down to:

Day: Standard and Premium
Night: Premium where possible, or I can't see a damn thing

When I try out the cockpit view of Premium cars, I hear Xzibit in my head saying:

Yo, dawg, I heard you like cockpit view, so we put hands on a steering wheel to go with your hands on a steering wheel, so now you can steer while you steer.

Hilarious!

I use whatever car that I like regardless of premium or standard.

I primarily drive premium cars but seeing as I now have pretty much every single premium car I want, I'm now starting to drive more standard cars.

Do you drive Premium or Standard?

At first I avoided Standard cars like the plague and drove just Premiums as much as possible, mainly because I drive in the cockpit view. I've had to break down and just settle for Standard cars because some of my favorite ones to drive are unfortunately just Standard.

I like how the Premium's look, but I'm all about collecting and driving the Standard cars.
