I've always wondered this about people. Do you have a tendency to use cuss words in your vocabulary much more than what would be considered acceptable by the general public? Some people have no tolerance for them and won't ever say them, others, like me, drop the big F-bomb every few words. Maybe some of you were heavily influenced by those around you growing up, or because of that despise it. Why are some cuss words more offensive than others? Is their a good time to use an offensive word? What makes a word offensive?

Something that's riddling my mind.

I've always wondered why they sound funny as well. Maybe it's because they are offensive so it makes you giggle

**** yeah!

I tend to use curse words when explaining stuff that I'm somewhat emotional about for some reason.

Funny thing is, when I curse, people tend to laugh at me even though I may be completely serious. I guess it's the way it rolls off the tongue.

Sometimes in class, I'll just curse while answering a question. It's just my character, though I can hold back curse words when I know they're not appropriate.

It's all the variations of offensive words.

Take an offensive word and add something to it. I would post an example, but I don't want to risk getting warning points for "bypassing" the swear filter and you can also make up your own.

My vocabulary depends on who I'm talking to. If I'm with my family, I'm very restrained and don't cuss much. But if I'm with a ton of friends, my main form of language is profanity.
I'm like this a lot. Even with immediate family I have respect enough to not blab them all over the place.

At work, yeah. Sometimes people don't get that you're serious until you speak their language. At home, nope, not a word. I didn't hear than language when I was young and I don't want my son to hear it either.

On the other hand, I can recall my father speaking like that to me since I was about 8 which is why I speak like I do. However, the youngest sister of my 3 older sisters (who is 33) would absolutely put me to shame since she swears all the time.

I'd heard it every since I was born pretty much. Cuss words were something never hidden from me.

For the topic.

I only swear when something hurts, or when I need to get stuff done and it isn't working. I find that those who swear a lot are mostly the lower educated adults who think it is cool to swear every 3rd word in a sentence. Because then their point becomes more clear...

I swear a lot like that but usually I don't realize I do it. Comes to me almost second nature.

That's the moment where you need to start thinking before you open your mouth. Otherwise it will haunt you forever and it will compromise your chances in life.

I have had a thick accent which made people think that I am some sort of white trash trailer park boy. First impressions of me were rarely good, but once they realised that I am not who I seemed to be things change. I won't say it killed a lot of opportunities for me but it did make things a bit more difficult to accomplish.

Edit

Slightly related,

I do love to watch British tv about the police.
The Brits have the best language and accents when drunk for swearing.

That's the thing, I can. It just depends on who I'm around. When I'm relaxed around friends, it's constant, but a lot of them are the same way. If I was going into a new place with new people (say formal), you'd never hear them. Family hardly hears it.

Of course, I 🤬 all the time.

In fact, the usual spanish translation of the word "cursing" in Argentina is a cursed word in itself, hence why I censored it.

Also, it's funny, the other day I was thinking about english curse words, and I felt that spanish curse words feel that much more powerful when it comes to vent myself.

Curse words appear on TV a lot of the time, plus they are used a lot in football chants. In fact, it's funny how they are used heavily on TV dramas, nothing like what I've seen from American television. In America, it's "what the hell were you doing with that guy?". In Argentina, "what the 🤬 were you doing with that 🤬 🤬?". Feels more real, as well, but TV shows always exaggerate as if the only purpose was to swear.

Argentinian forums are like this as well, and that's the good thing GTPlanet has against them: banning curse words makes for easier to read posts, and friendlier users overall, as those who curse a lot get banned.

I cuss out of habit from mimicking others. My two most commonly used words are "poop" and the f-word. I often use the F-word in a tasteless comedic fashion of exemplifying a punch line or adjective. In regular chit-chat though, I try to avoid it because I find it shows a lack of maturity, as well as exposing the limits of one's vocab when it becomes heavily relied on for spicing up sentences.

For the most part, no I wouldn't say I'm a potty mouth.

Although there are instances where I can make a sailor blush. (i.e. when I get road rage)

Swear words are like, my entire vocabulary (but GTPlanet has extended it greatly with alternatives ). I tell my dad "they're not meant to be offensive, they're just sentence enhancers because apparently I can't get my point across without them".

It's perfectly manageable though, I don't swear around elders and those of "superior status". I (typically) only do it when I'm talking casually with a peer.
