The special feeling of the P1 was ruined for me once the entire lineup looked exactly the same.
This. I can understand the want for uniting the brand under a certain 'image' but I feel the modern McLarens are just a bit too procedural in design, the higher up the performance chain you go. They all feel like brothers rather than that mental cousin made by an F1 team.

I'm still confused as to why they never built a Mclaren P1 Spyder. Both competitors had a drop-top model, so it makes sense.

This rendering here looks viable for production,

The closest thing to an F1 successor, imo is the LLC Rocket, only imo of course.

Edit: Rocket is roughly same age it seems.

When the F1 came out there was nothing to touch it and wouldn't be for many years. The P1 was released at about the same time as the 918 and La Ferrari, and isn't as fast as the older Veyron. It just doesn't stand out in the same fashion. The F1 also has it's Le Mans heritage and was a road car made by a Formula One team and conceived by a legendary F1 designer. The P1 is a road car made by a road car manufacturer - although one with an extensive racing heritage. I see the P1 as a halo car for McLaren automotive, not particularly as a 'successor' to the F1.

The F1 was a benchmark for the next 15 years, this is just one of those hybrid supercars for the next 15 years.

The F1 GTR finished 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th in Le Mans in 1995.

The P1 GTR? Has it ever been raced properly, or is it just a toy?

The P1 is a good car. A great one even.

But to me it just doesn't have the sheer impact the F1 does.

Also as has already been pointed out, the F1 had no rivals during it's lifetime that could get near it yet the P1 has two that are just as good if not better. I also think the P1 is just over-designed and the design lacks the simplicity that the F1 had. Also it lacks small things like a central seating position and a Gold exhaust.

I think people know because F1 prices are absolutely insane these days.

The F1 is one of the most singular visions ever brought to market. The P1 is too much a part of a movement, with ideas seen elsewhere in rival cars at the same time.

It's a fine car, but one which will likely be refined and evolved to cope with the next wave of rivals.

The F1 is too special. They way it looks. The way it sounds. The way you're sat in the middle. There's also its impressive racing pedigree. That's a lot to live up to.

The P1 is, uh... it's just another hybrid supercar.

Maybe I'm just old.
