The Dodge Challenger is a 2 door muscle car built by Dodge and was described as being "Dodge's answer to the Mustang & Camaro" and was introduced in 1969. It was one of 2 cars built on the Chrysler E-Body, the other being the Plymouth Barracuda. Ray Caldwell, and the Dodge backed Autodynamics team, built 2 Challenger's specifically for the 1970 Trans Am season, with Sam Posey racing in the #76 car. 1970 was described as being "the greatest season of professional road racing in US history" with big drivers such as Jim Hall, Mark Donohue and Dan Gurney also taking part for other teams. While Posey did not win a single race that season he did score in the points, and Dodge finished 4th in the Over 2.0 Manufacturers championship with 18 points. The chassis was built at Dan Gurney's AAR shop and the car was finished at Ray Caldwell's Autodynamics. The car was a factory Dodge entry and had Classic Wax as the main sponsor. The car finished 4th in the championship. It was known that teams would "acid dip" the cars in order to reduce weight but for the race at Laguna Seca it was in the acid bath too long and when the Chief Technical Engineer rested his arm on the roof of the Challenger before the race, it dimpled in and could not be used for the race unless a replacement roof was found. Within an hour, the team recieved permission from Dodge to torch the roof off a Challenger sitting on a showroom floor in downtown Monterey. The car finished 6th overall at Laguna Seca. At Bridgehampton, Posey DNF'd, and while the "official" result was listed as throttle, Posey and Gurney both said they recieved orders from Chrysler to never admit blowing an engine in a race. This forced him to alternate between the #77 and his backup 76 for the rest of the season.
